Is it ok for a client to contact you thru up work then ask you to add them on hangouts to interview you? I'm just trying to be cautious but also not be terminated before I'm really hired for a job.

Any mention of Google Hangouts implies that the client/job is a scam. Hangouts are where all the scammers are. So, if you don't want to loose hundreds of dollars, provide free work (and not get paid for it) or have your identity stolen, it's best to move on from this job.
