Communication

Hi,
I got an hourly contract recently. The respectable woman who hired me is a working mother, and she does not have the time to communicate properly. She asked me if I could communicate with her outside Upwork. She already took the interview and started the contract. Is it ok to communicate with her outside Upwork? Or does Upwork have any policy regarding communicating out of Upwork?

It is perfectly acceptable to communicate outside of Upwork and it's quite common.

Just ensure you are logging your hours properly using the Upwork tracker. Meaningful memos and levels of activity when you are "on the clock."  That's where your most important protection is.

Thank you so much for getting back. If the contract hasn't started yet, and the client asks for a skype interview, is it still Ok with Upwork?

Yes, the Upwork video function is very ineffective.

The key thing is to not begin any work until you have an accepted contract (client sends offer, you accept) to begin work.

Thank You! I'll make sure that I follow your advice.

The rule is that clients PAY freelancers through Upwork.

There is no rule - none at all - governing how clients COMMUNICATE with the freelancers they hire.

Hi Muhammad,

Since you are new here, I would recommend that you read up on these  these tips for avoiding questionable jobs, paying close attention to the Safety First! section of the resources, for more information about working safely through Upwork.

You may also want to read up on this help article for more information on what actions may cause yoru account to be temporarily or permanently suspended. I hope this helps!
