I am currently in employment at a company and intend to work as a freelancer in my free time outside the working hours at this company.

I wanted to inquire whether it is fine with clients and appropriate as per Upwork's policies to have an employed person work as a freelancer in his free time.

Yes.

Many Upwork freelancers have full time jobs and do Upwork freelancing on the side. This is normal.

There are no limitations on Upwork's end but do make sure to bid only on jobs you're sure you have time to complete as per client's requirements.

That is entirely between you and your employer. Lots of freelancers are also employees.
