Employer's project manager asking for bank name to send electronic check?

Hi,

I am new to up work and I got an offer yesterday and I signed my contract. The company wants to send me an electronic check to purchase equipment through their local vendor. They are asking for my bank name to make sure it is covered as one of their paying institutions.

Is this legitimate?

This is a scam.

  • As a new freelancer, make sure to read the Terms of Service at the bottom of this page and take Academy courses at the top of this page.
  • There are no employers here. Only clients and freelancers.
  • You are not hired unless you see a contract in My Jobs tab in your Upwork profile.
  • Real client will never ask to cash a check or buy things for them as part of a job. You are here to earn money by offering services.
