Hello,

I am new to upwork and need a bit of help setting up. I have completed 80% of my profile and I am well aware as to how I must reach 100%. However, the one obstacle between me starting my jobs is that I do not have my W-8BEN form set up. I am a non US person and a student. I do not have a formal contract at the place I work and I get paid on commission basis, hence, I am not a tax payer. I am willing to set up my account by choosing Local Funds Transfer as that is the most convenient method for getting paid in my country. But I do not understand what I must do next if I am a student and am not a tax payer.

Hi Zain,

You will need to fill your W-8BEN form under Settings> Tax Information in order to confirm that your are not a U.S tax payer and are responsible for paying taxes in your country. Then you'll be able to withdraw your earnings from Upwor.

Please, find more information here.

Hi Sandhikshan,

Please, click on your name in the upper right corner of your account, go to Settings> Tax Information to complete your W-8BEN form.

But being a student what to do if we are not a tax payer? Do we still need to fill that form W-8BEN?

Hi Subhawish,

You'll have access to your Upwork earnings as long as you have completed W-8BEN form, which purpose is to confirm you're not a US taxpayer. You can use your own legal name as it appears in your passport or other official documents. You may need to consult a local tax adviser about proper ways to report your Upwork income to your country's tax authorities.

Hi Bojan,
Thank you for help.
Please let me know one thing. Because I am a student and of course not a tax payer (being a student) what can i do for W-8BEN.
Will there be any negative effect if I fill that being a non-tax payer as I am only a student?

Hi Subhawish,

Please note that you will need to fill your W-8BEN form under Settings > Tax Information in order to confirm that you're not a U.S tax payer and are responsible for paying taxes in your country.

If you have any questions, we advise you to contact your local accountant or tax advisor.

Thank you.
