I am new to upwork and need a bit of help setting up. I have completed 80% of my profile and I am well aware as to how I must reach 100%. However, the one obstacle between me starting my jobs is that I do not have my W-8BEN form set up. I am a non US person and a student. I do not have a formal contract at the place I work and I get paid on commission basis, hence, I am not a tax payer. I am willing to set up my account by choosing Local Funds Transfer as that is the most convenient method for getting paid in my country. But I do not understand what I must do next if I am a student and am not a tax payer.
You'll have access to your Upwork earnings as long as you have completed W-8BEN form, which purpose is to confirm you're not a US taxpayer. You can use your own legal name as it appears in your passport or other official documents. You may need to consult a local tax adviser about proper ways to report your Upwork income to your country's tax authorities.
Please note that you will need to fill your W-8BEN form under Settings > Tax Information in order to confirm that you're not a U.S tax payer and are responsible for paying taxes in your country.
If you have any questions, we advise you to contact your local accountant or tax advisor.
