Get Profile Feedback from Experienced Freelancers on Upwork

Getting started on Upwork can take a lot of work and focus. To help make this process a little easier, we’ve created this post where you can request feedback on your profile. The community is full of experienced Upwork freelancers who are passionate about helping others. These users will review your profile and provide feedback based on their experience.

If you’re interested in requesting help, make sure your profile visibility is not set to “Private” and then reply below.

We’re excited to see how Community members can continue to help each other to grow!

Note: A previous version of this post was closed as the number of responses made it difficult to read and navigate. If you had not received a response yet to a request you made, please post again in this thread.

Good afternoon- I'm new to freelancing but have a lot of experience in my field- I've created a profile, but doesn't seem to get any responses- please advise on what changes I need to complete to be successful here on Upwork- thank you

Hi Jeri,

Definitely a lot of experience throughout your profile!

Here is the trick when writing your overview/summary on Upwork: When prospective clients are searching for technical writers, only the first two sentences of your summary are shown. This means you have a very small window of opportunity to grab the client's attention. Clients care about freelancers who can get results, so you want them to see--within those first two sentences--what you can do for them.

Instead of focusing on experience early, I recommend revising your first bullet to be client-focused. This will help clients recognize their goals ("what you can do for them" ) within the first two sentences and hopefully, convince them to read your entire profile and hire you. Here is an example:

I'm an expert Technical Writer with over 35 years experience creating a variety of documentation for manufacturers, healthcare facilities, academic instituations, and other busineses. I can provide documentation management to include writing, editing, and maintaining user-friendly technical documents, user manuals, standard operating procedures, department work instructions, training documents, forms, planning documents, presentations, assembly instructions, process instructions, component specification, service bulletins, and tutorials for both software and hardware which include both verbal and visual elements.

(Then, I would say something like "Why choose me?" and add your other bullet points beneath it.)

-------------Why choose me?--------------

◉  Strong project management and leadership skills, with the ability to complete projects accurately and on time, while providing guidance to others. Extensive experience with documentation workflows.

◉  Excellent grammar, editing, and proofreading skills; ability to express ideas with clarity and logically; strong 2D and 3D image creating and editing, in raster and vector based; extensive experience interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, blueprints, sketches, charts, and graphs to assist in the development of procedures; knowledge of fabrication of parts

(...)

Your portfolio looks great, but be sure to add skill categories for each item. Similar to the skill categories in your profile skills list, the skills attached to your portfolio items will help Upwork match you with relevant jobs, and help your profile appear in search lists when clients search for your skills.

The other areas of your profile look good. I do not see any problems or issues that would prevent a client from hiring you.

Good luck!

Hi Muteeba,

Your updates look good.

With reagards to creating a more effective portfolio and showcasing your skills and achievements, I suggest converting your Presentation Slides to a PDF. Believe it or not, there are some clients who may not have PowerPoint installed and cannot open that file to review. The PDF is more universal and more clients can open PDFs.

Also, I looked at your ABC Transporters in Health and Disease PDF file and it has great information. Are you able to add a cover page to the PDF file? This way, the cover page (hopefully, with a graphic) will show in your portfolio and I think a graphic gets more attention than an empty slot. For example:

For the PDF cover page to show in your portfolio, you might have to change the portfolio template to "Classic."

The other areas of your profile look good!

Hi Clark,

Thanks for the feedback. I'll convert my Presentation Slides to PDF for better accessibility, and I'll add a cover page to the ABC Transporters PDF. Appreciate the suggestions!

Best regards,

Jeff,

I looked through your profile and I think it looks good. My only suggestions are regarding your title and overview/summary:

Title: Upwork typically suggests removing experience information from titles and using it in your summary. I agree, so I would remove "with 20+ years of experience" and only have HR & Operations Consultant.

Overview/Summary: For the summary, I would add the title and experience:

I am a collaborative HR & Operations Consultant with 20+ years of experience helping business improve operations and maintain quality standards. I am passionate about being a short- or long-term solution for your business needs.

Portfolio: I only slightly suggest adding a portfolio because I know it can be difficult for HR/operations professionals to show visual samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression and clients like images, so if you can think of something to display, you should.

The other areas of your profile look good. I do not see any problems or issues that would prevent a client from hiring you.

Hello Upwork Community,

Please check on my profile and help me improve it to get my first real project, because I thought I got previous jobs but actually they were just scams, unfortunately.

So HELP

Hello Rakia,

It looks like you made a few updates from the review on August 1, but you still need to update your skills list. The other sections of your profile look good. Other than the few changes I recommended, I do not see any problems that would prevent a client from hiring you.

Winning your first project will most likely come from a combination of a good cover letter and then a good profile. Your profile is fine, but make sure your cover letters are based on the client's specific job requirements. Focus on the client's needs and requirements; highlight your qualifications; and tell the client how you will meet their needs.

Good luck!

Please, can you have a look at my profile and give me an honest review?!

Marianne,

You need to add more information to your profile. Your overview/summary does not provide enough information for clients to understand how you can help them. Use your summary to tell clients which data entry services you provide and how those services will meet their needs.

Also, update your skills list with more categories related to data entry. At a minimum, you should include Data Entry and Data Collection. It is important to keep your skills list updated with relevant skills categories so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.

Finally, add a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Abdullah,

I think your profile looks good, but your overview/summary should also tell prospective clients what you can build. You talk about experience and specializations, but you never say anything like: "As a Python developer and AI engineer, I can build AI models to help you make better business decisions, increase efficiency, and reduce your costs."

Also, add a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

The other areas of your profile look good.

Nsakanya,

The review provided on August 7 still applies--you can read it here. You still a lot to do to complete your profile so clients can understand what you do.
