Toheeb,
My opinion of your profile has not changed since the September 26 review. I still recommend removing the first part of your overview/summary.
You can see that review here. Other freelancers may offer you their reviews.
Good luck.

Hoang,
I think your profile looks good. Your overview/summary is informative and gives potential clients enough information to understand how you can help them.
You might want to add more skill categories to your skills list, but only add them if they are relevant. For example, you should probably add Mobile App Development and Mobile App Design. It is important to keep your skills list updated with relevant skills categories so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.
Everything else looks good.

Robin,
I love that photo, but it's a little murky. Might want to upgrade that. (Rule of thumb: Use the photo you show your parents, not the photo you show your friends.)
Uhm. If you're a content writer and you have a background in risk management or credit analysis (I'm a little beyond my depth here) then you need to connect the dots. Do you write content about risk management? If so, say that. There's a ton of work in finance writing and it pays above average for content. Mark yourself down as a finance writer and you should be able to get a kick-start with that.
You still have to connect the dots. Make it clear that your background in finance is a major strength in your writing.
As it is, it does seem a little like you're fishing. You sound like a crack request for proposal writer; if that's anything close to grant writing, you might want to stage yourself as a grant-writer/RFP expert.
The trick is to be spedific. There are 17 million Upwork members, so it pays for you to establish your expertise, which means define your niche and stick to it. (You can still apply to whatever job strikes your fancy ... but the closer you stick to home, the better your odds, I would think.)
Overall, it's difficult to be tossing everything into the air and hoping something sticks. Clients like simple messages. I'm an expert at _____ with these credentials _____ who can help you _______. My previous clients _______ (bought a condo in Hawaii, drive a Porche, eat lobster every night .... somehow show how they benefited from hiring you).

Zuzana,
You should look through Upwork profiles and fish around for ideas on how to expand your profile. Check out successful illustrators/marketing pros with high ratings and solid earnings. See what you can learn from them.
You've kind of just scratched the surface so far. What you're aiming for is to prove you have the experience to claim you're an expert. More details about past projects are helpful. Desscribing your range of styles is useful. A good portfolio is highly recommended if you haven't done that yet.
Good luck.

Susan,
You have to be more professional and not so much the person who loves helping people. That said, you posted a few job options, including teaching. It is strongly advised that you project yourself as an expert and not many people are experts at four or five different things. All that said, I'm not sure how you can work as a teacher in an online environment. If that's your choice, you should explain that in a manner that makes it acceptable to customers. "I tutor students on Zoom ..." or whatever it might be.
Again, it really doesn't work to be a writer, a teacher, an editor ... all the above doesn't really work. The reason, just for example there are 1.5 million writers on Upwork. If you want to be competetive, you have to be a writer who does nothing but eat, sleep, drink writing, so that you know the market, know your niche, understand what publishers are looking for, etc. If you're just dabbling in this, you'll get beat to the punch everytime by writers who do nothing but.
There are exceptions to every rule, but those are standard factors in the freelance world.

Thank you for your feedback, Anthony. I appreciate it. I am trying to find as much work as I can so I am trying to be flexible and willing to work on as many different kinds of projects as possible in hopes of getting work. I don't necessarily want to teach online, but having that experience has given me great skills that transfer over into other professions, so I wanted to portray my experience. I appreciate your feedback and I will adjust my profile accordingly. Thank you!

Ruth,
Your profile (which is quite long) leans towards a resume-style. Freelancing is more about selling a service and that service should be pretty specific. Just saying you have management experience doesn't tell people what problems your services will solve. You have to be as specific as you can be about that.
"I am an expert _______ with these credentials _______, who can help you _________,__________, and _________. If you hire me you wil have _____________ (more time at the beach, better profits, fewer redundancies, more customers, etc.).
Your overall background is not called for. Define how you became an expert at the service you are offering and answer the blanks in my templete sentences. You sound very competent, but at what .... be specific. Name the problems you can solve, but steer away from being a generalist. Experts do better in freelance than generalists.
Hope that helps.

Monika,
You get right to the point. It covers one vital need, which is to establish your expertise. That's critical.
You also sound confident, although that would be improved if you mentioned some previous work you've done, because a track record helps establilsh confidence.
What is lacking, perhaps, is sounding friendly. When I say this, I always wince because I do not recommend forced friendliness. (It always shows.) But if you wrote just a little more and allowed your personality to show through a little bit, that wouldn't hurt. People hire professionals (and you establish that point nicely), but they also hire people they get along with, so just being your casual self and letting that show sometimes helps.
I can't help more than that, because I'm a technical as a mongoose. (Not very.)

I'm brand new to Upwork, as of a few hours ago. Can you please let me know if I'm on the right track?
Thanks so much! 🙂

Coral,
You are on the right track, but I have a few suggestions to make your profile more appealing to potential clients. Let's go through each section:
Title: I recommend removing the experience information from your title since Upwork suggests experience only be added to your summary. Your title could be something like: Chief Financial Officer | Business Management or Chief Financial Officer | Business Manager.
Overview/Summary: It sounds innocent when you say things like "Dependable and self-motivated professional..." but everybody says that. To distinguish yourself, use your title and descriptive terms to describe yourself. Then, focus on the client's needs by mentioning specific services that will meet the client's goals. Clients expect to read about your skills and qualifications, but they really want to know how your skills/qualifications will benefit them.
When focusing on your services (meeting the client's goals) you should mention it very early in your summary. Why? Because only the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. This means you have limited space to grab their attention, and you want clients to see their goals (your services and deliverables) in those two sentences.
Finally, remove any mention of "starting a freelancing career;" Clients don't care if you're new or been around for 30 years; they only care about a CFO who can get results.
Here is an example of a revised summary:
I'm a highly skilled expert Chief Financial Officer with extensive experience providing business and accounting services to various organizations. I can oversee and manage the financial operations for your business including cost accounting, financial forecasting, budgets, and short- and long-term financial strategic planning.
My experience includes 7 years participating in a high-pressure office environment where I managed multiple simultaneous roles, responsibilities and projects. My clients discover that I'm detail-oriented with a proven ability to multitask, succeed without oversight, orchestrate creative ways around unique hurdles, and effectively resolve problems.
MAIN ACCOMPLISHMENTS
How can I help you? Reach out to me via Upwork and let's discuss your needs. |
You don't have to keep the content I wrote, but you get the idea--talk about your services and how you can help clients meet their needs.
Portfolio: Add a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.
I think that's it for now. The biggest thing is your summary: once you make a few updates, I think clients will have a better understanding of the services you offer and how you can help them solve their problems.
Good luck!
