Hello David,

I think your profile is okay. However, you should reconsider the beginning of your overview/summary. The beginning is not bad, but clients will only see the first two sentences of your summary in searches. This means you have a small window of opportunity to grab their attention. Typically, I recommend freelancers talk about their services and deliverables in the first two sentences. However, if you feel your first two sentences are getting attention, you can leave them.

Your portfolio, skills, project catalog, and certfications look good.

Chibuzor,

Your profile makes a common mistake; you have several skills and you are attempting to talk about all of them, which will be confusing to clients.

Clients ususally search for freelancers with specific skill sets and you profile will work best if you focus on one skill area or related skill areas. For example, your can use your main profile to provide virtual assistance services and your title should be Virtual Assistant. Then, create two Specialized Profiles -- one for data analytics (title: Data Analyst) and one for graphic design (title: Graphic Design or Graphic Designer).

For each profile, remove the first line: "PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY" and focus your overview/summary on the services you can provide to clients. For your virtual assistance profile, tell clients which office administration tasks you can do and how it benefits them. For your data analyst profile, tell clients about the data analysis work you can do ("I am a skilled Data Analyst with experience in collecting and analysing data, and preparing queries for small and medium sized businesses.") Finally, for your graphic design profile, talk about the things you can create (i.e., logos, flyers, social media graphics, business cards, banners, etc.)

Also, you need to add a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients.

Finally, add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history.

Once you make these updates, I think clients will have a better understanding of the services you can provide and how you can meet their needs or solve their problems.

Najeeb Ullah,

Your experience is good, but you have to show clients how you will help them meet their goals. You need to revise your overview/summary by telling clients which services you provide and how those services will meet their needs.

First, remove this from the first line in your overview/summary "1. SUMMARY". Then change some of your experience/skill information into deliverables for clients.

I am a Civil Engineer with more than 6 years' professional experience in various engineering disciplines such as site engineering, cost and quantity estimation, rate analysis, GIS mapping, and general construction principles. I use AutoCAD and other specialized civil engineering software to create highly detailed drawings for construction projects.

(Remove "4. PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY OF CAMEOS")

I can provide the following design services:

DAMS

(...)

ROADS

(...)

BUILDINGS

(...)

Also, I think you need one or two more items in your portfolio. Clients will expect to see more samples from a civil engineer.

After you update your summary, I think clients will have a better understanding of the services you can provide and how you can solve their problems.

Good luck!

Hi Gil,

I think your profile makes a good start. Your overview/summary speaks to your services and how you can help clients. I would probably remove the "BSc Biology" since the BSc is not related to English/Portuguese translations--(not unless you are translating biology/science materials.)

Speaking of materials, I think the first paragraph can be enhanced by adding more capabilties in addition to articles. For example:

I'm a proactive and motivated student at the University of Porto with experience translating and proofreading content. I can easily write and translate articles, blogs, term/research papers, essays, website content, and other written material without hesitation or difficulties in both English and Portuguese.

This gives potential clients more information about your skills and abilities, and does not limit you to articles.

Add a portfolio to show samples of your work. Even though most people can use a web-based translator, clients will want to see examples of translated documents. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients.

The other sections of your profile look good.

Keep applying to jobs by writing great cover letters. Always create a custom cover letter based on the client's specific job requirements. Focus on the client's needs and requirements; highlight your qualifications; and briefly explain how you will meet their needs.

Good luck!

This is Roberto Benitez, a general dentist who graduated from New York University in 1989. After doing clinical dentistry for over 20 years, Multiple Myeloma pushed me to retire and become disabled. I plan to assist my children adequately as they continue their post-graduate studies. Finding remote jobs for me is difficult because practicing dentistry requires hands-on at a physical location. Few posted jobs involve fully remote dentistry. There is a significant demand for writers.

-The character obtained throughout dental school.

-Twenty-plus years practicing my profession.

-Previous job experience as a college primary mathematics tutor and teacher, municipal

  legislator, and fabrics retailer.

-Being English-Spanish bilingual

should put me in a position to do remote jobs like translation, technical, medical, dental, and market writing. It would be a new career for me, bringing a learning curve, but I have the time and interest to take the challenge to help my family.

For this new endeavor, I need as much help as I can get. UpWork looks like an excellent place to get it.

Sincerely,

Dr. Benitez

Dr. Benitez,

There's lots of good information in your profile summary. Unfortunately, it's not the kind of information clients look for in a profile.

It can be extremely difficult to jump into freelance writing without experience. However, with your dental/medical background, there is an "automatic" trust that often comes with your profession, so many clients might be open to hiring you. But you must fix your profile summary.

The best way to start your summary is with some of the information you provide in your post, but not the personal information. The first two sentences of your summary are important. Why? Because only the first two sentences are shown to clients in searches, which means you have a very small window of opportunity to grab their attention. You must use that small window to talk about what you can do, and how you can meet the clients' goals.

Here is an example:

I am a general dentist and medical professional specializing in oral health and patient care. With 20 years of experience in clinical dentistry, I write dental care material and provide literature reviews on oral health. I can provide well-researched, expertly written dental healthcare blogs, social media posts focused on oral health, research documents, books, dental care plans, or any topic in the dental health niche.

I graduated from New York University in 1989 and spent my career focused on a wide range of dental and oral health services. My education and professional work experience has prepared me to write about everything from endodontics and cosmetic dentistry, to oral surgery, inlays/onlays, dental fillings, braces, and treatments for dental disorders. I am bilingual (English/Spanish) and can easily write or translate written material in both languages.

(Here, talk more about how you will work with clients to understand their needs.)

(Then, add any information that will help the client understand the value they are getting by hiring you. However, you should leave out the information regarding being a mathematics tutor/teacher, municipal legislator, and fabrics retailer--clients won't care and it will be confusing.)

(Finally, tell clients that you are avaible to discuss their needs.)

You don't have to keep everything I wrote, but you get the idea--focus on the dental writing services you provide and tell clients how you can mee their needs. Only focus on dental/medical writing because it will be confusing if you go off script. If you have other freelancing services you want to provide here on Upwork, you may want to add one or two Specialized Profiles that focus on any services not related to dental/medical writing.

Next, add more skill categories to your skills list, but only if they are related to your dentistry work and writing. For example, you should probably add Dental Care, Dentistry, Dental Technology, Article Writing, and Content Writing. It is important to keep your skills list updated with relevant skills categories so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.

Also, consider adding a portfolio to show samples of dental health writing or other similar content. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression and clients like visuals.

Once you make these updates, I think clients will have a better understanding of the services you offer and how you can meet their needs or solve their problems.

Hello Rebeka,

I looked through your profile and I have a few suggestions that might improve it:

Hourly Rate: I think your hourly rate is low. Most bookkeeping/accounting professionals based in Sri Lanka are between $7.00/hr - $30.00/hr, depending on experience. Based on your experience, you might want to increase your rate to at least $7.00/hr.

Overview/Summary: Your summary needs more information for clients to better understand how you can help them. Your summary should give prospective clients a brief overview of your experience, and immediately explain what you can do and which services you can provide. Clients come to Upwork looking for bookkeepers/accounting professionals who can get results.

The first two sentences of your summary are important because the client sees them when searching for freelancers. You want the first two sentences to be impactful and hopefully, the client is convinced to click and read your profile. Here is an example:

I'm an Accountant with experience using Xero and Quickbooks to prepare BAS, tax returns, manage accounts, and make accurate financial forecasts for my clients. I can help you with tax preparation, budget creation, and prepare financials and compliance tasks for your accounting or bookkeeping needs.

I have been highly successful due to my reliability and my attention to detail, and I am adamant about great communication with my clients. I manage my time to complete tasks before deadlines and I always commit to complete work or projects with 100% success.

(You can add more here about how you will work with clients to get their tax documents and other financials up to date.)

(Finally, tell clients that you are available to discuss their bookkeeping/accounting needs and how you can help.)

Once you make these updates, I think clients will have a better understanding of your services and how you can meet their needs or solve their problems.

Hi fam!

Looking forward to feedback!

Thanks,
Shahood Iqbal

Hi Shahood,

Your profile looks good. I think you should consider the keywords in your title, summary, and skills list.

Your overview/summary begins by mentioning several different types of videos you can produce. However, you mention only one Explainer Video in your skills list and your title does not mention video at all. If possible, you might want to consider adding Product Video and Social Media Video to your skills list. We are allowed only 15 skills, so only add relevant skill categories.

It is important to keep your skills list updated with relevant skills categories so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.

Add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history, especially since those jobs are highly related to your services.

Everything else looks fine.

Ali,

Your profile has a problem that I see in many profiles; you have a lot of different skills and you are attempting to place them all in one profile. This will be confusing to clients. Clients usually look for freelancers who can provide specific work or solve a specific problem.

My suggestion is to focus your main profile on a specific skill area or related skill areas--either sales, data entry/transcription, or customer service/tech support--but not all three. Create two Specialized Profiles that focus on any services not in your main profile. For example:

  • Main profile = Sales Professional
  • 1st Specialized profile = Data Entry & Transcription Specialist
  • 2nd Specialized profile = Customer Service & Tech Support

For each profile, focus your overview/summary on the specific services you can provide to clients. The information in your current summary is good, but it needs to be separated based on your new main profile and both specialized profiles.

Also, add a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients.

Once you separate your sales, data entry, and customer support profiles, I think clients will have a better understanding of your services and how you can help them.

Thanks.

Hi Juan Diego,

Welcome to Upwork.

I see four things that I think should be updated in your profile:

1) Your overview/summary has good information, but I want to suggest a revision to the first two sentences. I focus on this because only the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients in searches, which means you have a small window of opportunity to grab their attention. You want clients to see your service deliverables (their goals) within the first two sentences.

I'm highly skilled software engineer with experience in 3D, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Metaverse, PC, console, and Mobile Games. I can create unique and interesting game mechanics; design and implement new characters and content; and create game prototypes to test ideas and mechanics. I also enjoy rigging characters and vehicles as well as creating animation blueprints in Unreal Engine 5.

Expertise Area (Animation & Gaming):

(...)

2) Don't forget to include important skill categories in your skills list. As a game developer, you should consider Game Development, Game Design, Metaverse, Game Art, 2D Game Art, and 3D Game Art. It is important to keep your skills list updated with skills relevant to your title and summary so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.

3) Add a portfolio to show samples of your work. This is extremely important for someone in the game design industry. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression and clients will expect to see a few samples.

4) Add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history, especially since both jobs are highly relevant to the services you provide.

Hi Gbenga,

Welcome to Upwork.

Your title could use some spacing to distinguish between different subjects: Expert Content & Copywriter: eBooks | Blogs | Articles | Social Media

In your overview/summary, remove "Welcome to my profile! I'm Gbenga," Clients will only see the first two sentences in your summary, so you don't want to waste space with a greeting. Instead, start with:

Are you searching for captivating content and compelling copy that can elevate your brand, engage your audience, and drive results? Look no further! I'm a seasoned Content and Copywriter with a passion for crafting words that resonate, persuade, and inspire action.

(Add spaces to make your summary easier to read.)

✶ What I Offer:

(...)

✶ Why Choose Me?

(...)

✶ Let's Elevate Your Brand:

(...)

Add more writing samples to your portfolio. Many clients will not click links to leave Upwork, so you should upload writing samples to your portfolio.

Hello Emmax,

There are four (4) important things you need to do to make your profile more appealing to clients:

1) The first thing you must do is change your profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face; no graphics or avatars. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

2) Your overview/summary provides great information about your services, but it might not be enough. Add a brief overview of your experience; saying you are "seasoned" typically includes years of experience. Provide more details about how you will work with clients to understand their marketing needs. Then, provide information about any key accomplishments while providing digital marketing services to other clients.

3) Add a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients.

4) Remove the job in your employment history if it is not a real job that you held.

Hi Muhammad,

I think your profile looks good. I recommend adding a one or two Facebook ad samples to your portfolio.

You should also consider adding a project catalog. The project catalog allows you to setup a pre-packaged service that clients can buy without you sending a proposal. Due to higher than usual requests for project catalogs, reviews and approvals are taking a minimum of 10 business days. Read Get Started With Project Catalog for more information.

Everything else looks good.

Hello Madhurima,

I think your profile provides good information to clients. However, I think your overview/summary could offer more details about your experience as a content creator, and any successes you have had with previous clients.

Your video introduction is great. If possible, you should also provide a version narrated in English; I think this might help reach a larger audience and generate more interest from clients.

In addition to your video introduction, I recommend adding a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Everything else looks good.

Dear community members,

Please hear me out. I have registered on upwork long time ago (may be 7-9 years), but havent been active for years. Got back to it 2 years ago and started actively looking for jobs. I am a senior system administrator and most of my life working in IT, although been working in graphic design as an outsource for my secondary job. My first profile was for system administrator, as soon as I got back to upwork I found 3 jobs and successfully finished them, one was for 100$ and 2 other 10$ each. Soon I learned video editing and motion design and added an specialized profile. But things didn't go well. I haven't received any new job for next 5 month and I quit. Now I really want to get back to freelancing and want to get to intermediate/expert level to constantly have new gigs. But for last 1 month as I am still struggling to get new job clients never answering to my cover letters, I spent around 100 connects already. Could you please review my profile and give me some advice on how to improve description and portfolio?

P.S. I have removed my IT specialized profile and left only motion design, because I want to become maximally efficient in this field of work since I really love creating motion graphics.

Thank you so much in advance.

I've looked unto your profile and it seems impressive. im new to upwork and still looking forward to my first job. i'm rooting for you that you land a job.

Thank you very much, I really hope so. Good luck to you and to all of us as well!

Aleksandre,

Well, you have some nice skills and some clear-headed thinking. What I need to say is stick with it. You're smart and you will learn from your mistakes. And keep asking questions.l

I like the way you handle your write-up, but there are lots of areas that need to be stronger. Go through it and take out all the details that make you sound weak or new to graphic design. Very simply two years of experience is not very much. Those are the things you should look for. Telling people you are "passionate" or "dedicated" just makes you sound like someone who started this work a week ago. Start thinking like a professional. (And don't use the word professional -- it's meaningless here.) In fact, pretend you've been doing this for 10 years and try to sound like that.

You say "My experiences have been truly diverse." Do you see how the word "truly" makes it sound like you're trying too hard to impress us? Professionals don't need to try that hard. Instead, say, "My diverse experiences have taught me ... X, Y and Z."

It's these little moments when I see  someone with strengths trying too hard. You wrote, "I have had the priveledge of collaborating with gaming YouTube channels ...."

Priveledge? Really? You're a professional. This is work. The gaming industry job was just another job; it wasn't a beauty contest. You didn't go home with a trophy. Try to sound like a professional. Be straight forward: "I have worked with the gaming industry completing intros, outros and montages ..."

Take out the boyish enthusiasm and try to meet your clients with confidence. Your strongest message has to be "I can get the job done." It shouild not be, "Gee whiz, I get to do this ..."

You are clearly bright and I think you can understand what I am getting at. Also, your write up is a bit long, so don't worry about cutting. Don't add any ... trim it down and make it stronger and confident-sounding.

That's the best advice for a very long period of time in my life. Thank you so much for this!
