Get Profile Feedback from Experienced Freelancers on Upwork

Getting started on Upwork can take a lot of work and focus. To help make this process a little easier, we’ve created this post where you can request feedback on your profile. The community is full of experienced Upwork freelancers who are passionate about helping others. These users will review your profile and provide feedback based on their experience.

If you’re interested in requesting help, make sure your profile visibility is not set to “Private” and then reply below.

We’re excited to see how Community members can continue to help each other to grow!

Note: A previous version of this post was closed as the number of responses made it difficult to read and navigate. If you had not received a response yet to a request you made, please post again in this thread.

Hello Valijon,

I looked through your profile and I have a few suggestions:

1) Capitalize the first letter of each word in your title; this will help it stand out a little better: Graphic Designer / Logo & Brand Identity Designer

2) Remove the greeting and your name from the first sentence of your overview/summary: "Hello! My name is Valijon,Why? Because only the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. This means you have very little space (about 250 characters) to get their attention. You want that small space to include important words (like your services); you don't want to waste any space with a greeting or your name.

3) Add more skill categories to your skills list. You should include categories like Graphic Design and UX & UI Design. It is important to keep your skills list updated with relevant skills categories so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.

Christina,

You wait until paragraphs three and four to tell us what services you are offering and your first two paragraphs are not very useful. (Rhetorical questions are, by definition, a waste of time.) Then, when you do tell us about your services, you kind of blast right through them, as if you were in a hurry. You develope strategic roadmaps for podcasts, for example, and then you don't explain how you do that or give any examples. It just feels rushed.

Slow it down and keep it simple. "I am an expert podcast developer who offers a wide range of services from content writing to production to marketing." See? First sentence -- boom. Put it right there. Then explain your credentials -- did you go to school for this? Have you had notable successes to name-drop? What types of podcasts have you worked for -- major companies or private ones? True crime or inspirational topics? When you provide details, this gives a lot more credibility to what you say.

Keep it friendly, confident and establish your expertise. You do sound like you know what you're doing, but the writing is confusing and a bit mashed together. If it is longer, it also gives clients a chance to get to know you a bit. That can help, too. The Internet is like outer space; it's pretty cold. So you have to spend a little time with your clients so they can warm up to you. I'm a tough grader, but I hope that helps.

Good luck.

I didn't know you had two profiles. I looked at the podcast one with the long title. I would encourage you to be very concise with your tittle as well. "Expert Podcast Developer." Upwork's system -- what it shows to clients -- works best when you are brief. I don't know why, but that's what I'm told. A rambling title might only present clients with the unneccessary words, which will not help them find you.

Anthony

Valentin,

Here are a few things I see in your profile that I would fix:

Hourly Rate: Your rate will be more recognizable ending in ".00" rather than ".33." I recommend making your hourly rate $33.00/hr. or another rate the ends with ".00."

Title: Industry uses a dash in the word "back-end" and you should do the same in your title. Upwork uses the word "back-end" as well, and you want your title to use Upwork's version of the word:  Backend -> Back-End

Overview/Summary: Your summary speaks nicely about your experience and background, but you never tell potential clients how you can help them. Clients come to Upwork with specific projects or needs, and they look for freelancers who can meet those needs.

I recommend using your summary to talk about your services and provide examples of the types of projects you can complete. As an example:

I'm a highly experienced developer with over 15 years of expertise building web, mobile and desktop applications, and decentralized applications (DApps). I have a strong track record in PHP development, with 5 years of leadership experience.

The idea is to give clients examples of your services so that they better understand how you can help them or solve their problems.

Portfolio: Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Thank you a bunch! I've made some adjustments to my Overview/Summary. Could you please take another look? Additionally, I'm curious about your thoughts on my portfolio. Given my specialization in Back-end, my focus is on code and architecture rather than the sites themselves. Any guidance on what would be more suitable for my specialization would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

May Everyone get sucsses on upwork and achive there goal new in community please help out.

Awais,

You hit all the right markers with your write-up, but your first sentence needs to be fixed (at the end). Secondly, where are your writing samples? You've done hundreds of assignments, so you must have a ton of samples to choose from. Professional writers always make writing samples available. Put at least three solid samples in your portfolio.

Good luck.

Nofisat,

Your writing is very clear and informative. You did a nice job.

I would stronly urge you to put your Master's degree right at the beginnng. "With a Master's degree in English, I am an expert copy editor ...."

Having a Master's degree is your strongest asset and puts you way ahead of others competing for the same jobs. You have to establish your expertise right off the bat and drawing attention to your degree (plus your impeccable writing) is what will set you apart from the rest of the pack.

Ling,

You might want to find an English writer to help you get the grammar and syntax corrected. As far as your writing, I would ask you to consider a stronger, more positive word than "good." There's a lot of competition on Upwork -- millions of competitors, so the word "good" might not stir much of a response.

Good luck.

Hi Genius,

There is not enough information in your profile to convince clients to hire you.

Your profile overview/summary will be more appealing to clients if you focus on one skill area or related skill areas. For example, networking and hardware support are related, but those are only loosely related to software development and neither is related to video or photo editing.

If you say you are a computer or technology professional and mention computer networks, you have to create one or two sentences that tell clients which networking services you can provide. If you mention software, you cannot just say "computer languages such as c c++," you have to tell clients what applications you can build with your C or C++ knowledge. The same for hardware--if you mention it, tell clients specifically what you can do with it and why it should matter to them.

Anyone in a technical skill area needs a portfolio. The one item in your portfolio is unreadable and the description does not provide details about the item. I recommend adding more items to your portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients, and most clients will probably view your portfolio.

Add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. This is especially important when the jobs are highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.

Hi. I know my profile needs A LOT of work but I am not sure how. I have been on Upwork since 2021 and have had a few jobs. Even though I did great jobs for them, as the clients said, either they failed to give me a review, have written the wrong name, or have given a very average review. So my profile kind of shows a lack of work when in reality I have worked a fair bit. I send proposals and they are just viewed. I also hardly ever get invited for any job. I am loosing patience here and I really need to come up with something soon. Please have a look if you have time and let me know what I am doing wrong. I would highly appreciate it.

Hello!

I'm a Graphic Designer. I'm new here. Can someone please review my profile and portfolio?

Thank you

Muhammad Umar,

It looks like you made a few updates since the last review; you can see that review here.

Your profile is much improved and your portfolio looks good. However, graphic design is a highly competitive skill area on Upwork, so getting attention from clients and winning a job can be challenging. With over 8 million of freelancers here, I would guess more than 300,000 identify as graphic designers or claim the ability to provide graphic design services. With approximately 25,000 graphic design jobs (based on keyword searches), the odds of winning a graphic design job is not great.

However, if you have the Connects to spend, I encourage you to keep trying since you have the experience and skill set.

The next thing to do is focus on your proposal cover letters. For tips on cover letters, read through Upwork's best practices on How To Write a Cover Letter.

Good luck!

After your last review on my profile, I focussed on my profile especially the bio. I only have 2 connects left which made me worried about getting my 1st job on Upwork. It's a really tough job.

Thanks Mr Clark S.

Hey everyone!

I am a professional Microsoft Word and PDF expert. I am really worried because I could not find a single opportunity on Upwork. Can someone review my profile and portfolio and suggest what I should do to succeed on Upwork?

Thanks

Hey Tahmina,

I think the same message to Muhammad Umar applies here. Most Microsoft Office services are well represented by hundreds of thousands of freelancers on Upwork, which means getting jobs for Word formatting, PDF conversions, etc. can be challenging.

It looks like you made a few updates since the review on November 18, and your portfolio looks fine. Be sure to take a look at Upwork's Academy Courses and articles for success tips:

Thanks Mr Clark S.

Yes, I made a few updates since last review. I was curious that is my profile ok or not.

Hi Tahmina,

I agree with clark.Your summary needs to highlight your services and their benefits upfront, as Anthony suggested. The first two sentences are crucial as they're what clients see first in a search - a mere 250 characters to grab their attention. Showcasing your services and their advantages is key within this limited space.

I would love feedback on my profile.  I have applied for 7 positions, and some have been read others not.  What more can I do to stand out?

Hi Diane,

I agree with Anthony's feedback regarding your profile; you can see his review here.

I think the first part of your overview/summary should offer specific examples of your services and the benefits of those services like Anthony stated. This should be stated as soon as possible because only the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. This means you have very little space (about 250 characters) to get their attention. You want clients to see their goals (your services and possibly, benefits of those services) in the first 250 characters.

Here is an example:

I am an excellent life coach who uses cognitive therapy techniques to improve the skills needed to manage and lead effectively.  I help individuals, groups, and organizations strengthen their decision-making and leadership skills, and expand their thinking capacities to produce sustainable results.

You surely don't have to use what I wrote, but the idea is to sell your services and yourself (i.e., what benefit does the client get by hiring you). You have good information in your summary, but the first few sentences must convince clients to click and view the rest.

Hello Community,

Thank you very much!

Hello MD Nayan,

I think your profile looks fine. I do not see any huge problems that would prevent a client from hiring you.

You should correct the title of your Web Design specialized profile: WordPress Expert | Website Maitenance | Spped Optimization | Fixing ---> WordPress Expert | Website Maintenance | Speed Optimization

Anthony's assessment is accurate--there are hundreds of thousands of WordPress developers here and only about 16,000 WordPress jobs based on a keyword search. That means competition is extremely high, so getting jobs can be a challenge.

However, if you have the Connects to spend, it can be worth it once you start winning jobs.

Muhammad,

Your profile overview/summary is quite long and most clients will probably not read all of it. Also keep in mind that only the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. This means you have very limited space to get their attention, so you want the first two sentences to reveal your services and how you can help clients.

Your portfolio, skills, project catalog, and certifications look good.

Emmanuel,

The best way to get started on Upwork is to make sure your profile is 100% complete before applying to jobs. At a minimum, you should go through the following Academy Courses:

Hello All! I am new here and I would like to introduce myself. My name is Beata and my profession is research. I posses broad experience in market, customer and brand research gained over years of working in global brands companies. My backgrounf in social psychology paved my way into research.

I would appreciate some help in understanding how the system here works? Is my profile prepared properly? Should I add anything else?

Is there anything that I should know and I just don't know I should ask about it? 🙂

Have a great day!

Hello Beata,

Welcome to Upwork.

Understanding the freelancing process on Upwork can take some time. My suggestion is to read the first post here: To All Freelancers Looking For Help and try to follow the links provided to better understand the things you should pursue and things you should avoid.

Your profile preparation is fine and everything looks good. I have a few suggestions that might help improve it:

1) Start your profile overview/summary with a small introduction that mentions your services within the first two sentences. Why? Because only the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. This means you have very little space (about 250 characters) to get their attention. You want potential clients to see their goals (your services) within that small space.

Your first few sentences already have this information, but a slight revision sounds like this:

Expert research professional with nearly two decades of research experience and an extensive background in market research, business performance evaluation, marketing KPIs tracking, customer research, and brand insights. With a proven track record in end-to-end research projects, I conduct quantitative and qualitative research projects to consistently deliver actionable insights.

*Expertise in Primary and Secondary Data Analysis:

(...)

You do not have to use this format, but I think it speaks more directly to the potential client.

2) Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression and clients will expect to see data visualization samples from a researcher. If you do not have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

3) You should also consider adding a project catalog. The project catalog allows you to setup a pre-packaged service that clients can buy without you sending a proposal. Due to higher than usual requests for project catalogs, reviews and approvals are taking a minimum of 10 business days. Read Get Started With Project Catalog for more information.

The other areas of your profile look good.

When you have questions about the platform, you can always come to these forums, and moderators and other freelancers will offer advice or assistance. Most of this occurs in the Freelancers Forum.

Good luck!
