Emmanuel,

The best way to get started on Upwork is to make sure your profile is 100% complete before applying to jobs. At a minimum, you should go through the following Academy Courses:

Hello All! I am new here and I would like to introduce myself. My name is Beata and my profession is research. I posses broad experience in market, customer and brand research gained over years of working in global brands companies. My backgrounf in social psychology paved my way into research.

I would appreciate some help in understanding how the system here works? Is my profile prepared properly? Should I add anything else?

Is there anything that I should know and I just don't know I should ask about it? 🙂

Have a great day!

Beata

Hello Beata,

Welcome to Upwork.

Understanding the freelancing process on Upwork can take some time. My suggestion is to read the first post here: To All Freelancers Looking For Help and try to follow the links provided to better understand the things you should pursue and things you should avoid.

Your profile preparation is fine and everything looks good. I have a few suggestions that might help improve it:

1) Start your profile overview/summary with a small introduction that mentions your services within the first two sentences. Why? Because only the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. This means you have very little space (about 250 characters) to get their attention. You want potential clients to see their goals (your services) within that small space.

Your first few sentences already have this information, but a slight revision sounds like this:

Expert research professional with nearly two decades of research experience and an extensive background in market research, business performance evaluation, marketing KPIs tracking, customer research, and brand insights. With a proven track record in end-to-end research projects, I conduct quantitative and qualitative research projects to consistently deliver actionable insights.

*Expertise in Primary and Secondary Data Analysis:

(...)

You do not have to use this format, but I think it speaks more directly to the potential client.

2) Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression and clients will expect to see data visualization samples from a researcher. If you do not have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

3) You should also consider adding a project catalog. The project catalog allows you to setup a pre-packaged service that clients can buy without you sending a proposal. Due to higher than usual requests for project catalogs, reviews and approvals are taking a minimum of 10 business days. Read Get Started With Project Catalog for more information.

The other areas of your profile look good.

When you have questions about the platform, you can always come to these forums, and moderators and other freelancers will offer advice or assistance. Most of this occurs in the Freelancers Forum.

Good luck!

Akshat,

Good start to your profile.

Your profile overview/summary is informative and your skill categories look good. You should add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your AI skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

You should also consider adding a project catalog. The project catalog allows you to setup a pre-packaged service that clients can buy without you sending a proposal. Due to higher than usual requests for project catalogs, reviews and approvals are taking a minimum of 10 business days. Read Get Started With Project Catalog for more information.

Hi all. My profile dropped for 4-5 months. I want to raise it. I've changed my profile description a little. Check, please.

Vladyslav,

Many freelancers have seen declines over the past several months to one year.

Your profile overview/summary has good information, but you use a lot of emojis at the start of your summary. When clients search for freelancers, only the first two sentences (approximately 215-250 characters) are shown. This means you have very little space to get their attention, and you want clients to see important words--not emojis.

Other than that, your profile is fine. Competition is much higher these days and many freelancers are boosting their profiles, so it can be difficult to attention or invitations.

Hi! I've been on the platform probably two weeks at most. I am having some trouble with hearing back from projects I have proposed to. Could someone help with my profile? One thing that is on my mind is my title. I'm not sure if it is my best fit. I welcome any feedback (not just my title) you have with my profile. Thank you so much!!

Hi Caitlin,

Welcome to Upwork.

Competition is high; even in the field of scientific research. However, your niche is not as crowded as others, so hopefully you will get attention from clients soon. Plus, not hearing back from clients after submitting proposals may not be directly related to your profile. More than likely, it's related to the large volume of freelancers here (competition); clients being highly selective; and the effectiveness of your proposals.

Your profile is well-written, so I'm certain your proposal cover letters are also appealing. But clients often receive 50+ proposals, and they rarely review all of them.

I agree about your title. When I first look at it, I have no idea what your profession is, and I don't know until I read the first sentence of your overview/summary. You do a good job of including skill categories in your title (i.e., process improvement, research methods, etc.) I recommend a title that retains skill categories, but includes a more descriptive first word. Instead of "implementation," probably: Research Scientist | Implementation | Research Methods/Writing | Process Improvement

I think the rest of your profile looks and sounds great, and your qualifications are great. Hopefully you get that first job soon.

Good luck!

Marstel,

Your profile does not have enough information to convince clients to hire you. To make your profile more appealing to clients, provide more information in your overview/summary. Clients come to Upwork with specific needs and they look for freelancers who can get results. You must include specific examples of how you can get results.

As a civil engineer, tell clients exactly what types of projects you can help with (e.g., "I help construction companies and engineering firms manage a wide array of structure and infrastructure development projects including buildings, roads, tunnels, bridges, stadiums, arenas, and many more.")

Also, some forms of graphic design are related to civil engineering (i.e., architectural design, 2D/3D rendering, CAD, etc.) and you should mention these if they are part of your graphic design experience. However, other graphic design (i.e., flyers, brochures, banners, marketing material) are not related. You may want to create a Specialized Profile that focuses on any services unrelated to your civil engineering work. This will allow you to focus your main profile on civil engineering services only.

Add civil engineering examples to your portfolio. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression and potential clients will expect to see several samples from a civil engineer. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Pratik,

You have good information in your profile. I suggest revising the first part of your overview/summary. When clients search for freelancers, only the first two sentences of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space to grab their attention, and you want clients to see their goals (your services and how you can help them) in the first two sentences.

This is what clients need to see:

"I will remove background noise and unwanted parts, apply noise reduction and equalization and voice leveling to make audio professional."

Clients can see the following, but it does not need to be first:

"I am a very dedicated, responsible, precise, detail-oriented and active worker. I am a person with positive attitude."

Here is a example:

I am a dedicated, precise, and detail-oriented Audio Editor and podcast producer. I can remove background noise and unwanted parts, apply noise reduction and equalization, and voice leveling to make your audio sound more professional.

Add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. This is especially important when the jobs are highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.

The other areas of your profile look good.

Syed Bilawal,

Here are a few suggestions for your profile:

Title: Capitalize the first letter of each word in your title; this will help it stand out: Off-Page SEO Expert | Guest Post Outreach Expert | Wordpress Developer

Overview/Summary: Remove the first sentence in your summary: "Welcome to my Upwork profile!" Why? Because when clients search for freelancers, only the first two sentences of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space to grab their attention, and you want clients to see your services in the first two sentences--not a greeting.

Also, add spacing between paragraphs to make your summary easier to read:

Are you looking to boost your online presence and take your business to the next level? Look no further! With over four years of experience, I specialize in off page SEO, guest post outreach, and WordPress development.

As an off-page SEO expert, I use algorithms to rank your website higher on search engines. I also write compelling stories that appeal to both search engines and users. As a WordPress developer, I can keep your website's functionality and technical aspects up-to-date. I specialize in pixel-perfect WordPress website design and development that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Custom themes and seamless plugin integrations help me bring your vision to life. I am also well-versed in WordPress development, CSS, and JavaScript.

My goal is to provide cost-effective, timely services without sacrificing quality. Your complete satisfaction is my top priority. So, if you want to streamline your processes and achieve exceptional results, please do not hesitate to contact me today. I'll ensure the best value for your investment and tailor my services to your specific needs.

Portfolio: Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Njabulo,

The information in your profile sounds fine, but you need to update this: "With [X] years of hands-on experience"

How many years?

Also, I recommend removing the emojis because they occupy valuable space.

Finally, add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. This is especially important when the jobs are highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.
