Hi Kristine Grace,
A few things I noticed about your profile:
Title: There is redundancy in your title. I recommend using the phrase "virtual assistant" only once. This means, removing the word "general" since Upwork does not use "general" to describe virtual assistance. I think your title should be: Virtual Assistant | Social Media Marketing
Overview/Summary: Remove the following words and phrases:
"ABOUT ME"
"Hello there! My name is Kriss"
Here's why: Headings are good for organization, but they don't work so well at the beginning of a freelancer's profile summary. When clients search for freelancers on Upwork, only the first two sentences of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space to get their attention, and you want clients to see important information in that small space. You don't want to waste any space with a greeting, your name, or unnecessary words.
My suggestion is to revise the first paragraph of your summary and use words that describe your services, and what you can do to help clients. It sounds harsh, but clients rarely care to hear about you; instead, want to hear what you can do and how you can meet their needs. For example, your first paragraph should include an overview of everything under "SERVICES I OFFER:"
Gifted virtual assistant helping businesses achieve their goals through exceptional administrative support, web & social media content creation, customer support, research, and project management. As an educator, I've honed a wide range of skills that I believe will translate seamlessly into the world of virtual assistance, and improve efficiency, streamline business processes, and increase productivity.
SERVICES I OFFER: (Clients probably care more about what they're going to get (services) than your specific skills, so I would list services first.)
WHY CHOOSE ME? (Next, clients care about your value proposition, so I would mention this next.)
MY SKILLS: (...) |
The reason I recommend this re-ordering your summary is because most clients don't read long summaries and yours is quite long. However, your summary has good content, and if you wish to keep it all, it might be best to move the most important information to the top.
Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills--especially any social media screenshots, Trello or ClickUp screenshots, etc. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression, and clients will expect to see a few samples. If you don't have samples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Hello Andrea,
I'm reaching out for some guidance as I embark on my Upwork journey. My profile is currently 40% complete, featuring my profile overview, skills, and languages. I'm in the process of building up the rest of my profile but haven't yet added projects, testimonials, education, certifications, or employment history, as I'm just starting out and don't have these elements to share.
I'm eager to receive feedback from experienced freelancers who can offer insights into what I've put together so far and suggestions on areas I can improve or enhance. I'm particularly interested in how I can make my profile stand out even at this early stage.
I've set my profile visibility to public, and I appreciate any guidance and advice the Upwork community can provide. Excited to see how we can collectively grow and support each other!
Thank you,
Pavlos Nedelchev

Hello Pavlos,
You answered much of your own question: the best way to improve a 40% complete profile is to make it 100% complete. Employment history, certifications, and testimonials are great to have, but with marketable skills and great qualifications, you can still attract clients.
Here are some other things you can do to improve your profile:
Photo: Most clients prefer to interact with business professionals, and one of the first things they see is your photo. Anyone over the age of 18 (which is the required age to use Upwork) should have no problem creating a simple, business-like photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.
Overview/Summary: You have very limited space at the start of your summary to grab a client's attention, so you should remove words like "About Me." The rest of your summary sounds good.
The other important part of your profile is your portfolio. For now, the portfolio is more important than a project catalog or certifications, so you should work on it first.
Since you are new to Upwork, you definitely should try to get your profile to 100% complete before applying to jobs. Be sure to check out the following Academy Courses and Learning Paths:
Good luck!

Lana,
Welcome to Upwork. I think your profile is fine, but it starts off in a confusing style and the first sentence is vital to attracting clients. In fact, the first few words are also important. My understanding is that Upwork uses these snippets to send to clients. Their only image of you when they do this is in the first few things you say.
So, I realize that "Image maker, expressive visual storyteller, knowledgeable in traditional ways of making art as well as many of the available graphic software," is useful to say and covers a lot of ground, but it seems to lack immediacy and punch. Your clients really want to hear something else right away.
What I recommend is an opening that is an industry standard. Clients want to know that you're an expert and that you can get the job done. Those points are critical. So the standard opening is, "I am an expert multi-media artist and illustrator with a proven track record and a variety of styles who can create stunning images for a wide variety of projects."
The points in that are threefold: One: Establish your expertise -- very critical. And then tell people what you can provide for them. Also, when you say you have a proven track record you are telling people you know how to get a job done to completion.
I realize you already understand these basics, but this is the way I explain them. I don't mean to be didactic.
That said, you have a singularly personable writing style that works well. It's clear and purposeful. You've done a nice job there.
After that, it's also important that you raise your hourly rate. On Upwork, rates are negotiated for each project (sort of), so the rate on your profile page really only does one thing: It shows how confident you are. So, I would look at other graphic design/illustrator profiles and find a rate that is at least in the middle of the pack. You have very competetive skills and a professional sounding approach. Your rate should at least match that. My guess: Try $20 per hour at the very least. This will show more confidence.
Good luck. I liked your samples. I hope you do well.

Thank you, Anthony, for your feedback.
I fixed the things you said. I know I need to establish the authority so I understand what you mean by a suitable introduction.
All the best!

Hammad,
I recommend adding a few spaces to your title and capitalizing the first letter of each word to help it stand out better: UI/UX Prototype Designer | Website Designer | Figma Designer
Your overview/summary has good content, but you should start your summary by listing your services and how you can help clients. Only the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients in searches. This means you have very little space to get their attention, so you should use that space to highlight your services.
Here is an example:
Seasoned professional with 5+ years of marketing, technical, and creative design expertise. I can create everything from UI/UX designs, logos, and 3D models to content strategies, digital marketing assets, technical SEO, WordPress websites, databases, and applications. |
The goal is to ensure clients see more of your services within the first two sentences so that they will be convince to click and view your entire profile and hopefully, hire you.
The other areas of your profile look fine.

Hi please can you go through my profile and tell me what you think. Thanks for the time here is the link to my profile.
Nov 30, 2023 05:58:14 PM by Clark S
Hi Abolarin,
Your profile does not have enough information to convince clients to hire you. To make your profile more appealing to clients, provide more information in your overview/summary and add a portfolio. Clients come to Upwork with specific needs and they look for freelancers who can get results.
In your summary, you need to give clients specific examples of what you can write and type (e.g., articles, blogs, e-books, web content, product descriptions, etc.) In addition to these examples, tell them about your approach to providing these services. Talk about your timeliness, accuracy, and ability to communicate effectively. Also, tell them your typing speed and and how you can help maintain quality standards. There are hundreds of thousands of data entry freelancers here, so clients need several reasons to choose you.
A portfolio should show samples of previous work or demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Kashif,
My review of your profile hasn't changed. I think it's in good shape.
Some other freelancers might leave some feedback.
Nov 30, 2023 07:16:40 PM by Clark S
Goel,
You should change your profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.
You should also remove "MY SKILLS" from the first line of your overview/summary. Instead of starting your summary with a list of skills, tell clients what you can develop and build, and how you can help meet their needs. To do that, you can move the information under "MY SERVICES" to the top.
Add more skill categories to your skills list. It is important to keep your skills list updated with relevant skills categories so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.
Add a short job description to the job in your employment history. This is especially important when the jobs are highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.

Hi Mam, I am new in UpWork. I need work. Please help me. I will do any job no cost. plz help me.
Nov 30, 2023 07:24:18 PM by Clark S
Hi Chitralekha,
Andrea is an Upwork Moderator. The moderators provide valuable information to freelancers and moderate the forums, but can't really help you get jobs. Other freelancers cannot help you get jobs either; you must submit proposals for a chance to win jobs.
I think you should make a few updates to your profile:
1) I would remove the greeting and your name from your overview/summary: "Welcome to Upwork Profile. This is Chitralekha Maity," Why? Because only the first two sentences of your summary are shown in searches, and you don't want to waste valuable space with a greeting, and clients can already see your name on your profile.
2) Add more to your portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. There are hundreds of thousands of data entry professionals here on Upwork, so you must give clients many reasons to choose you.
3) Add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. This is especially important when the jobs are highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.

I would love a little bit of feedback on my profile. I've been a freelance editor for a local editing group in Michigan since 2020. My current authors are hitting a holiday season lull, so I'm looking to add a few extra jobs on the side. https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~01c80e5b5860df9913

Heather,
Nice effort. I'm very curious about the city of the village of Clarkson. I didn't know a city could be part of a village. That's a new one to me.
Anyway, I'm not very fond of rhetorical openings. You start with "Do you need an editor?" By definition rhetorical questions are unnecessary, so I find that a pretty weak opening.
What your clients don't know is anything about you. So, your start should be "I am an expert editor and proofreader with these credentials (insert most impressive credentials here) who can solve these problems for you .... (get your manuscript publication-ready or whatever that might be).
I think you need to add details about your editing experiences that aren't student-related. Your work with the local editing group should be perfect for that. How many novels have you worked on? Were they history novels, mysteries, romance? Details are important. They raise your credibility.
Next, and this is a bit old-fashioned, but it can be important to some academics and serious publishers, you shoud tell people what credentialed systems you use or know. There's the UPI Stylebook and News Writing Guide, the Associated Press Stylebook, the Chicago Manual of Style, etc. If you could name those if you're familiar with them; some publishers specify which one of these they want you to conform to. If you know any of these, you should make note of them.
One extra thing you could add is something that makes you stand out from all the other editors out there. You could say "I specialize in young adult material ..." or something. (Just made that up.) People are attracted to services that have a specialty even if they aren't particulary interested in that specialty for themselvs. They like to think they've hired someone who is a cut above the others.
Your writing is clear and friendly, so you're off to a good start. Hope this helps.

Zabey,
I looked through your profile and there is good content there. Here are a few suggestions:
1) Your title should only use skill areas or skill categories--all other words are unnecessary. Your title should be something like Graphic Design or Graphic Designer.
2) I recommend removing "Hello here is Zabey" from your overview/summary. Why? Because only the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search, and you should not waste valuable space with a greeting and your name; clients can already see your name on your profile.
3) There are grammar corrections needed in your first sentence, so be sure to use a grammar checker for your profile and cover letters. Here is how I would rewrite the beginning of your summary:
I'm a graphic designer with 8 years of experience. I can easily create your logos, brochures, flyers, posters, banners, and more. I'm passionate about creating visually compelling designs that leave a lasting impact. With a keen eye for detail and a blend of creativity and technical skills, I bring ideas to life through innovative and aesthetic solutions. Let me know how I can help you further!!!!
Skills (...) |
4) Correct the spelling of your portfolio item title: "For advatisment" should be "For Advertisement.
5) Add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. This is especially important when the jobs are highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.
