Get Profile Feedback from Experienced Freelancers on Upwork

Getting started on Upwork can take a lot of work and focus. To help make this process a little easier, we’ve created this post where you can request feedback on your profile. The community is full of experienced Upwork freelancers who are passionate about helping others. These users will review your profile and provide feedback based on their experience.

If you’re interested in requesting help, make sure your profile visibility is not set to “Private” and then reply below.

We’re excited to see how Community members can continue to help each other to grow!

Note: A previous version of this post was closed as the number of responses made it difficult to read and navigate. If you had not received a response yet to a request you made, please post again in this thread.

Muhammad,

I looked through your profile and overall, I think it is good. However, I recommend removing the first sentence in your overview/summary: "Are you searching for a professional in different services?" This statement does not define services, so it will not mean much to clients who read it.

When clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space (approximately two sentences) to get their attention. You want that small space to include meaningful words (i.e., your services, your skills, your experience).

Instead of "I have provided our clients with the following services:," speak directly to the potential clients who read your summary: "I can provide you with the following services:"

Everything else looks good.

Hi Imran,

I looked through your profile and I think it looks good. The only suggestion I have is to remove the first line in your overview/summary: "💥 Welcome to my profile! 💥"

When clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters are shown. This means you have very little space to get their attention. This small space should include important words--like those that appear in the first sentence of your second paragraph: "Passionate and experienced Graphic and logo Designer with a knack for crafting memorable identities that resonate."

The other areas of your profile look good. I do not see any problems or issues that would prevent a client from hiring you.

Hi Muteeba,

You have made some good updates over the last few months. Here is another update I suggest you make: remove the greeting and your name from the first sentence in your overview/summary: "Welcome to my profile! I'm Muteeba Azhar."  Outside of Upwork, this type of greeting is perfectly fine. However, within an Upwork profile, these words waste valuable space.

When clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have 200-250 characters (approximately two sentences) to get their attention. You want those 200-250 characters to be important words (i.e., your services, skills, or experience). Right now, your first 40 characters (Welcome to my profile! I'm Muteeba Azhar) take up space that could be occupied by words focused on your services or skills.

I recommend removing "Welcome to my profile! I'm Muteeba Azhar" and starting your summary like this (or something similar to this):

As an enthusiastic Data Scientist and accomplished Scientific Research Writer, I can help you transform complex data into actionable insights and craft compelling research narratives.

Your portfolio looks great, and your skills, testimonials, certifications look good too.

You should also consider adding a project catalog. The project catalog allows you to setup a pre-packaged service that clients can buy without you sending a proposal. Due to higher than usual requests for project catalogs, reviews and approvals are taking a minimum of 10 business days. Read Get Started With Project Catalog for more information.

Hi Clark,

Thanks for your input. I've removed the initial greeting, updated my summary, and added more certifications to showcase my skills.  I'll also check out the article and work on creating a project catalog.

I would be grateful if you could take a moment to review the recent updates, and I welcome any further suggestions or feedback you may have. Your expertise is invaluable, and I'm committed to optimizing my profile to its fullest potential.

Thank you again for your time and guidance.

Hi Angela,

I see a few updates since the August and September reviews of your profile. Here are a few more suggestions that I think will improve your profile:

Title: Remove the word "General"--it provides no value to the virtual assistant title.

Overview/Summary: You make a statement: "As an entry-level virtual assistant," but your work history shows experience as a receptionist, executive assistant, office assistant, and administrative assistant as far back as 2001. You are nowhere near "entry-level," and I highly suggest removing it.

Instead of making your services about you, make them strictly about the client. For example:

I am eager to leverage my skills in data entry, email management, scheduling, and general administrative tasks to assist you in your workload."

could be more client-focused if you say something like:

"My skills in data entry, email management, scheduling, and general administrative tasks will ensure accurate recording of your data and information; better organized and efficient emails; prioritized schedules based on time management; and more balanced management of your administrative workload.

My commitment to excellence is reflected in my strong foundation in computer literacy and proficiency in various software applications, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite."

You created a portfolio, but it does not contain information relevant to your virtual assistance work. The portfolio should provide visual samples of your data entry, scheduling, and administrative tasks.

Hello Ameen,

To maximize space in your overview/summary, remove this: "Bio: Hello, I'm Ameen."  Why? Because when clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters are shown. This means you have very little space (only 200-250 characters) to get their attention. You want that small space to include your services, skills, or experience--not unnecessary words, greetings, and your name.

You say in your profile that you have multifaceted skills, and you should have a portofolio that exhibits that. Add more items to your portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients, and clients will expect to see more.

Your skills list and employment history look good.

Clark S Community Member

Hi Gracias,

Welcome to Upwork.

Good start to your profile. Here are a few things I suggest updating to improve your profile:

Overview/Summary: There is good information in your summary, but I highly recommend removing the following:

"THANK YOU FOR VISITING MY PROFILE."

"Hi, I am Gracias , full time and individual freelancer."

Here's why:

1) Clients can already see your name on your profile, so there is no need to repeat it.

2) Being a freelancer here is implied, so there is no need to mention it.

3) When clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space to get their attention. You want clients to see their goals (your services) or your skills and experience in this small space--not greetings, thank yous, or your name.

Also, do not tell clients what you are looking for: "...looking for a long term work relationship." Clients are only concerned about how you can help them.

A simpler, more client-focused start would be something like:

I'm an established Virtual Assistant who knows how to play the most critical role in supporting the administration and operation of an organization. I can provide accurate and efficient virtual assistance and administrative support by completing tasks on time and within budget.

My proficiency spans across the following areas:

I am proficient in, and can help you with the following:

* Virtual Assistance

*Communications

(...)

Portfolio: Add more items to your portfolio that demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients, and with virtual assistance being extremely competitive, you need as many strengths as you can get in your profile and clients like visuals.

Employment History: Add a short job description to your job at Iconic Ventures International. The description is especially important when a job is highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.

Good luck!

Edward,

Well, that's a surprise. You wrote the most flamboyant request for a profile review I've ever seen (way over the top) and then your profile is a very sober, steady-at-the-helm write up. Which one is the real you?

Now, having said all that, read the comment I just wrote for Olympia. This is not about saying, "Well, I have a lot of skills, you pick where I might fit in. Freelancing is about being an expert in a specific field or niche and offering your services on a contract basis in that niche. As a freelancer, you have to expect to work off-site (remotely) at a task in which you believe you are tops in your field. Why tops in your field, you ask? Because you work for yourself. If you mess up, your fallback posiiton isn't an employer with a liability policy, it's just you. So, you better know what you're doing, so you don't get sued for some reason or another.

The standard templates for Upwork freelancing are "I'm an expert writer with XYZ credentials who can provide you with ..." Or "I'm a graphic designer who went to XYZ university to study are who can ...." Or "I'm an expert translator whose native language is X and has a master's degree in Y."

This isn't about being a smart person with a bunch of skills. It's about being a service provider with excellent service.

Edward,

I'm in total agreement with Anthony's review of your profile.

The first sentence in your overview/summary: "I'm a dynamic professional with a diverse skill set and a passion for making things happen." could be stated by anyone across 1,000 different niches. The trick to an Upwork profile summary--as Anthony stated--is to establish your expertise immediately, and tell clients which services you provide and how you can help them.

When clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space to get their attention. Clients need to see your services and your expertise in that small space--not a generic statement about making things happen.

For example, I would reverse and revise the sentences in your second paragraph to make them more client-focused:

Using Python, R, and SQL, I can analyze and manage complex datasets and employ analytics tools like Google Analytics, Mix Panel, and Looker to optimize business operations, collect useful information/data, draw conclusions, support better decision-making, and meet your customer's demands.

Also, you absolutely cannot get away without having a portfolio. Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression, and clients will expect to see visuals on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Olympia,

Nice credentials ... but ....

Freelancing is about offering a service to clients. You list your credentials, but never mention any service you can provide.

You're not supposed to make the client guess what kind of service you are offering. It looks like you are offering to run a human resourced department somewhere. But that's not done remotely -- or is it? Usually, that's done when you apply for a job, not work freelance.

Can you find a specific service you thiink you can monetize for remote work. The idea is to be specific, not just "anything that comes up on your humann service needs." Again, that's forcing the client to guess what it is you do.

1. Find your niche. 2. Write a profile that establishes your expertise in that niche, tell people what they will benefit from hiring you. (Technically, not hiring you, but contracting you to perform a service.) That's how freelancing works.

Edward's avatar
Edward P Community Member

Hey Olympia,

After thoroughly examining your Upwork profile, I recommend the following enhancements, considering other's feedback:

  1. Niche Focus: Showcase a specific niche to distinguish yourself and attract clients seeking specialized expertise.
  2. Profile Overview Length: Aim for a concise overview, approximately 250 characters. This brief snapshot is crucial for initial client impressions.
  3. Services Description: Within the profile, detail specific services you offer in a client-focused manner. Clearly articulate how your skills benefit potential clients.    If you can't fit it (I know I can't fit mine 😚), then I might consider making a whole new portfolio project to show case these.
  4. Data-Driven Claims: Reinforce claims with data-backed achievements. Consider attaching a document highlighting detailed project success rather than listing them in the profile.
  5. Service-Oriented Focus: Emphasize client value in your language to showcase your service-oriented approach.
