Get Profile Feedback from Experienced Freelancers on Upwork

Getting started on Upwork can take a lot of work and focus. To help make this process a little easier, we’ve created this post where you can request feedback on your profile. The community is full of experienced Upwork freelancers who are passionate about helping others. These users will review your profile and provide feedback based on their experience.

Hi!

My name is Fresbhat Alemu. I am Ethiopian and living inAddis Ababa  city. I am thirty-nine years old. I have MA from Addis Ababa University in Educational Leadership and Management.My first degree is English and literature from Kotebe College of teacher Education. I have taken all the major and related courses to my studies. I have also extensive experience of leading schools and teaching English language in various ways and have attended numerous courses on these subjects. 

Allow me to highlight three bullet points from my resume that I believe demonstrate why I am the perfect candidate for this position:

  • Trained different teachers and assistants during the beginning and middle of annual academic years to ensure attention to detail and adherence to academic policy.
  • Maintain utmost discretion when dealing with sensitive topics.
  • Typed documents such as correspondence, reports, memos, and emails, and prepared 3 reports weekly for managements and boards.

I believe that these bullet points demonstrate that I have the ability to perform the major duties, and train others in how to perform in this role effectively, should the need arise. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue learning and being able to work virtually.

 I am very good at typing, translating, creative content.  I am interested in learning more. I constantly learn from everyone around me.  By joining UPWORK, I know that I will learn from you how to navigate this virtual world. I would like to be inspired by the other members working here and how they got their first job and their experiences as this is my first time in this platform. Isha,

Clients don't seek out freelancers who are passionate about their work. After all, almost everyone in the world is passionate about their work to some degree. Beyond that, clients are looking for experts who provide reliable services. 

 

I don't get any feeling of credibility in your write up. I could say, "I build rocket ships that can fly to Mars." Do you believe me? No. But if I gave you some credible details, "I am a former NASA Engineer who worked in engijne design and electronics for 11 years after studying space-environment propulsion at MIT." OK. Now I'm sounding believable.

 

Don't just make claims that you can do the work. Tell me some details that make it believable.

Where did you learn Islandic?

 

It seems to me when you promise people the sun, the moon, the stars and a few of the distant planets, they will quickly assume you are not telling the truth. That said, writing one sentence in a profile is not very convincing. Did you know, I can run faster than a motorcycle? That's a bit how you sound, like you're promising so much it's probably not true.

Read the above comment that I wrote for Melvin. The only thing that makes your services special or different from 1.5 million others on Upwork who do the same work as you is yourself.

 

Your profile sounds like you have no personal relationship with your work. It's a profile, not an advertisement. If it was a radio ad, believe me, it would be perfect. Flash, flash, flash, flash ... splash, splash, splash, splash. But no you. 

 

I tell people to write about their services and not their personal traits, but not to the point where it's antiseptic. Way too sterile for my taste. The part you need is more of yourself and fewer cliches about your service.

Your write-up reads like an advertisement, when it has a chance to be much more than that. It' supposed to be a profile, not an advertisement.

 

You say all the right advertisement things ... "Looking for a logo designer to create minimalist logos, text logo ... and more?" 

 

That's fine, of course, but you miss the opprotunity here. A profile allows people to get to know you a little bit. Your writ-ups sounds like a quick ad on a radio station.

 

This is the Internet. You are thousands of miles from your clients. You will never hear their voices. You will never shake their hands. You will never see the smiles on their faces and they will never hear your voice, shake your hand or stand in the same room as you.

 

So, what are you going to do about that? You have to be a bit more generous with your write up. Put yourself into the room. "I am an expert logo designer with X years of experience who enjoys creating logos that exemplifies the type of image you want for your business."

 

Then write a little bit about your experiences with design. "I have worked for retail and non-for-profit concerns looking to present their image in a holistic light that is attractive to as many people as possible."

 

You can humanize your very rote write-up. I'm trying to tell  you that your write up as it is sounds like you tore it out of a cataloge for Profile Writing School. It has no personality. Then it says very obvious things, like "Communication is important, so let's keep in touch."

 

Everybody says that. It doesn't makle your profile sound personal; it makes your profile sounds like you copied it from someone else.

 

Try to make it a little more you and a little less blah, blah, blah. You're the one who makes your business different from everyone else in the world, so try to make it sound more like yourself and less like everyone else in the world.

I get that you're a musician, but you should use a better profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

 

Your profile overview/summary does not have enough information to convince clients to hire you. Ten years of experience as a live performer is great, but you have tell clients why that should matter to them. Do you create or compose sheet music? Or, maybe you're a music journalist who can convey information and insights about the music industry? Or--as your employment history summarizes--maybe you are here to offer music arrrangement services where you help finish or rework compositions?

 

Use you summary to tell clients which services you provide and how you can meet their needs. Clients come to Upwork with specific needs and they look for freelancers who can get results.

 

Also, add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. This is especially important when the jobs are highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.

Hey Clark,

Suddenly, I've seen a bunch of profiles that look the same. They are hugely flashy, full of bold print, often sprinkled with icons and generally wait for the third paragraph to say, "Hi, I'm Anthony ... Welcome to my profile!" 

 

They also promise things like, "I excel in everything I've ever done in my life from toilet training to designing logos." However, there's no personal committment to these statements, no details that back them up. 

 

So, the question is ... and I may be the slowest kid on the block here ... Don't you think someone has started a profile writing business? All these profiles read like radio advertismenets, cheesy, flashy, way too excentric and all from a rigid template.

 

Are these paid for profiles? What do you think?

I agree; I've seen similar for the past week or so. And--as you said--there is a very good chance someone started a profile writing service that uses AI-generated text to crank out cheesy, over-the-top summaries.

 

It's difficult to say if these are paid for profiles. If they are, no one is getting his/her money's worth! A lot of freelancers complain about paying for Connects, so I find it hard to believe folks are paying for profiles with no guarantee of exposure.

 

But, I can certainly see a group auto-generating profiles with AI-generated summaries, AI-generated images in portfolios, fake jobs, fake college/university credentials, and the like.

Yeah, I'm a dinosaur, as you know, so it hadn't occurred to me that AI was behind any of this. You described it well, however. "Over-the-top," promises. Flamboyant and cheesy. That sounds about right.

I'm going to start asking. Maybe someone will confess. However, I would clearly think that people would pay for profile-writing services. For one thing, one of my gigs is writing cover letters for foreign medical students seeking internships in the United States. Their English is poor and the payoff (getting a medical intership) makes it high stakes. And here, clearly, are some candidates with very marginal English abilities. So, it kind of makes sense.

Anyway, we trudge onward. I admire your ceaseless optimism. On further on we go.

Welcome to Upwork.

 

Great start to your profile. Here are a few things I noticed:

 

Hourly Rate: I've spend my fair share of time in NYC, so I know how expensive things are! The going rate for an expert technical recruiter--especially one with a history at Microsoft, MongoDB, and American Express--might be $175.00/hr in NYC, but that rate might be a little high for many Upwork clients.

 

Microsoft is an Enterprise client on Upwork and many Fortune 100 companies are here, so it's not like all clients are cheapos. However, I just searched for technical recruiters with similar skills/experience, and only two of the 50 profiles I viewed were over $75.00/hr. (one was $125.00/hr and the other was $100.00/hr).

 

I'm not saying you must reduce your rate, but Upwork can be a numbers game. Along with expertise, clients often look for bargains, cost-effectiveness, etc. Just something to consider since there are several thousand tech recruiters here.

 

Overview/Summary: Your summary sounds good, but I want to focus on the first part. More specifically, the first one or two sentences.

 

When clients search for freelancers on Upwork, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary (approximately two short sentences) are shown. This means you have very little space to get and keep a client's attention. You want to fit as many important words as possible in that small space. These words should focus on your services, skills, and experience, and how you can help clients.

 

Since you have only 200-250 characters to get their attention, I recommend revising the first sentence to make it more client-focused, which will also ensure some services and skills are seen. Here is an example:

 

As a Talent Acquisition Leader with over a decade of experience, I use data-driven methodologies and cutting-edge tools to optimize every stage of the recruitment process. Data integrity and highly effective internal communication ensures a culture of open dialogue and collaboration.

 

You certainly don't have to use what I wrote, but it reduces your first paragraph (407 characters with spaces) to 284 characters (with spaces) and allows potential clients to see more of your services. When clients can see their goals (your services) in that small window, they be enticed to click, read your profile, and hire you.

 

Portfolio: A portfolio is not necessary for a high-powered tech recruiter, but if you have anything you can add, you should add it since clients tend to like visuals.

 

Your skills list and employment history are great.

Your stats look good, but here are a few suggestions I have:

 

Title: Capitalize the first letter of each word in your title; this will help it stand out better: Lead Generation | Data Entry | LinkedIn Lead Generation

 

Overview/Summary: I recommend removing the first line of your summary: "Top Rated Freelancer with $50k+ Earned, 140+ jobs, and 8000+ Hours completed on Upwork.Why? Because you're basically repeating information that clients can already see on your profile. Your earnings are hidden, so I guess the $50k+ could be meaningful to some clients.

 

However, I often suggest freelancers use the first two sentences of the summary to introduce their expertise and services. I suggest this because when clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters in your summary are shown. This means you have very little space to get their attention. You want that small space to include important words (i.e., your services, skills, and experience).

 

Employment History: Add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. This is especially important when the jobs are highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.

 

Everything else looks good.

I'm not sure where you got information about "profile length" (meaning, the overview/summary) should aim to be 250 characters, but that is completely misleading. Upwork prefers freelancers provide a lot more substance in their profile summaries and throughout their profile. You mentioned this in a post to Olympia (not Olivia), and it appears that you changed your own profile in the same manner.
