Getting started on Upwork can take a lot of work and focus. To help make this process a little easier, we’ve created this post where you can request feedback on your profile. The community is full of experienced Upwork freelancers who are passionate about helping others. These users will review your profile and provide feedback based on their experience.

If you’re interested in requesting help, make sure your profile visibility is not set to “Private” and then reply below.

Again, Mitchell, you think tossing your resume out there is how this works. It isn't.

Freelancing is about selling a service or services to others. You never name the service you expect to do. 

Again, the template is locked in. You can't avoid this. The opening sentence that is an absolute must: I am an expert _________, with _________________ (training/schooling) and _______________________ (work history), who can _________________ (create something/solve a problem for you), so that you can __________________ (take a day off once in a while/earn more money/win a Pulitzer Prize/play golf/etc.).

What's the focus of that sentence? It's the problems you can solve (the service you offer) and how it will benefit your clients. The rest of your write-up should shore up your credentials and keep talking about the results you can provide for your clients.

You have to establish your expertise immediately -- or sooner. Why? Because why would anyone read more if you were not an expert? But if you are one, they will want to know what you have to say. 

That's it. Simple as yodelling.

We are incredibly grateful for your guidance on Upwork. Your mentorship has been invaluable for us newcomers!

I need your help with something. I've completed multiple contracts successfully and received positive feedback (with 94% JSS). However, I took a break in December 2023 and wasn't actively engaged. Since January 1st, 2024, I've been actively submitting proposals, and am online nearly 18-20 hours a day, but not receiving any profile or proposal views.

I'm concerned that my profile might be undiscoverable or have some issues. I'm diligently submitting proposals and maintaining high online visibility, but haven't seen any traction. Could you please help me understand what might be wrong with my profile? Is something missing, or is there a flaw in my strategy? Please note that I'm an Upwork Pro member as well.

The problems you are experiencing are probably not related to your profile. As competition has increased, many freelancers are getting low or no profile or propoals views. Boosting seems to work for some freelancers; you could try boosting your profile to see if you get more attention.

Your profile isn't terrible, but it's not good either. Your profile does not have enough information to convince clients to hire you. To make your profile more appealing to clients, provide more information and make updates to existing areas:

Title: Capitalize the first letter of each word in your title; this will help it stand out: Website Developer

Overview/Summary: There are hundreds of thousands of web developers here, so you must give clients several reasons to choose you. Simply knowing how to design/develop websites is not enough.

First, remove this: "Hello, I'm AKOGWU GODWIN,"   Why? Because when clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space (approximately two short sentences) to get their attention. You want this small space to include important words (i.e., your services, skills, and experience)--not greetings or names.

The rest of your summary sounds good, but it is not enough because all web developers will talk about their skills and ability to deliver high-quality results. You must also give clients other reasons to work with you. For example:

• Describe your strengths (e.g., skilled with layout, color schemes, e-commerce integration, etc.)
• Tell clients how you will communicate with them during development to ensure the final design meets their needs.
• Talk about your attention to detail and how you maintain quality standards.
• Do you provide unlimited revisions? Do you offer follow-up support after a website is completed?
• Mention your time management and organizational skills.

Clients will find many web developers on Upwork. The big question is: do they have enough reasons to choose Akogwu for their next web development project? The information you provide can help them better understand why they should hire you and how it will benefit them.

Portfolio: Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. This is extremely important for a web developer since the portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Once you make these updates, clients will have a better understanding of your services and how you can help them.

Have you considered seding direct invites to freelancers with whom you've established a personal relationship, or intend to? This is best practice in any business. Good negotiation skills build trust. A good first performance encourages new clients to return. Many clients send invitations to freelancers.

I looked at your profile and overall, I think it's good. Here is what I would change:

1) I would remove the briefcase emoji and this: "Hello, I’m Javier O." This seems innocent, but those characters waste a lot of space. When clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space (approximately two short sentences) to get their attention. You want this small space to include important words (i.e., your services, skills, and experience).

2) I think you need one or two more writing samples in your portfolio. What you have is great, but clients might expect more from an academic writer.

I looked through your profile and overall, I think it looks good. Here are few things I noticed:

1) Correct the spelling of your title: WordPress Dveloper --> WordPress Developer

2) If your profile represents an agency, your overview/summary is fine. If not, then you should change "we" to "I" throughout.

Hello to All,

I am disappointed by not getting any job yet, and I constantly sending proposals to clients. But unfortunately, no client even read my proposal, either they hired among the first two or three applicants. Or, they didn’t visit again on their job post. I am really tired trying to get my first job in Upwork. I submitted proposals to several jobs. I really surprised and confused that how can a person plan to be a full-time freelancer career as on this scenario.

I am an expert Frontend Developer and MS Excel and Access. I want to be a full-time freelancer but has no money at the same time. Is there any scope to get a job on the proposed connects? Can anyone please tell me about the secret to getting a job, or what is the Upwork algorithm to get job? Please give me way to get a job or make me understand that what to do to start and sustain a career on Upwork. Shall I look for any other freelance site or full time job in any company. Any advice is much appreciated.

I understand your frustration--many freelancers to. It can be difficult to win your first job and competition is extremely high for front-end, back-end, and full-stack development.

There really are no secrets. If your profile is complete, well-written and showcases your qualifications and skills, you are halfway there. The other part is good writing proposal cover letters that convince clients you are their best option.

The most important thing you can do right now is make sure your profile is public. Your profile is set to Private, which means you are excluded from the Upwork marketplace, and clients cannot see you when they search for freelancers. Clients will still see your profile when you submit proposals to them, but I recommend making your profile public so that any client can find you and possibly invite you to a job.

Your profile is incomplete and will not convince clients to hire you.

The first thing you should do is change your profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

Next, make sure your profile is 100% complete before applying to jobs. The best way to complete your profile is to go through the following resources or Academy Courses:

Skip the hello and introducing yourself. Your name is already in bold letters on your proflie.

Start with, " I am a skilled Customer care and Customer support ..." 

That's much stronger and it would fit with Upwork's protocal.

I like the fact that you are looking for $24 per hour. That shows a lot of confidents.

Overall, your profile looks good. The only suggestions I have:

Also, winning your first job starts with a complete, informative profile. You have that part. Now, you must submit quality proposals to jobs that where you are highly qualified and have the skills/abilites to do the work. It sounds simple, but those really are the best approaches to getting jobs.

On Upwork, nobody is looking for seasoned professionals, because this place is flooded with experts. So, why not hire an expert instead of a seasoned professional?

You have 19 years of experience with whatever it is you do, so you certainly would qualify as an expert in my very amateurish opinion. So, why don't you call yourself an expert?

If you're an expert, act like one. You sound like you know the ropes, but then you say: "My goal is to ..."

Saying that's your goal sounds like maybe you won't accomplish what you set out to do. Insted of "My goal is to ..." why don't you try sounding like an expert and saying, "I can ...." After 19 years, you should know what you can and cannot do. So, make that clear to your clients. What can you guarantee you can accomplish rather than guarantee you can aim for?

You say you are "passionate about learning." That doesn't sound like an expert. An expert knows what he knows. Sure, it's great that you are always trying to learn, but do you have to say that in your profile? It just sounds like you might not know what you are doing -- yet. 

If you say, "I always keep up with the latest advancements in my field," that sounds like a professional. If you say, "I am still learning," it sounds like you don't know what you're doing yet.

Scratch the word "dedicated." We know you're dedicated. You put 19 years into this, so why would we assume otherwise? You sound dedicated without having to say it. When you say it after 19 years of experience, it sounds like you don't have anything else to say. So try saying something more useful than "I am dedicated."

Be more assertive and more professional. Draw your line in the sand. Tell people what you can do, not what you hope to do.

I'm excited to join this thread and seek valuable feedback from experienced Upwork freelancers on My Profile . While I've had success working with regular clients outside Upwork since 2019, I'm eager to expand my reach and attract organic projects on the platform.

I currently have 7 completed projects and 1 ongoing project on my profile, but I haven't yet landed any organic clients through Upwork itself. Your write-up looks AI-generated. The problem here is that these are impersonal. They lack all sincerity. They aren't really profiles at all; they are just advertisements.

I've seen some profiles that indicate that you can have success with AI-generated ads. I personally think you are missing a huge opportunity. A narrative that tells your work/life story in personal, friendly voice, I believe is much better than a list of skills splattered with garish icons. 

If you want a profile instead of an advertisement, try looking around Upwork and seeing the various styles of narrative writing. They try to write your own profile. You wrote a very well-written letter asking for help on this forum, so I think you could certainly write a compelling profile by yourself.

Be careful bringing people to Upwork to write you positive reviews. I'm not sure if that may be viewed by Upwork as fake reviews.
