Get Profile Feedback from Experienced Freelancers on Upwork

Getting started on Upwork can take a lot of work and focus. To help make this process a little easier, we’ve created this post where you can request feedback on your profile. The community is full of experienced Upwork freelancers who are passionate about helping others. These users will review your profile and provide feedback based on their experience.

I like the information in your profile, but it's not enough to convince clients to hire you. Virtual assistance might be the most competitive skill area on Upwork, so getting attention can be a huge challenge. This means you must use your profile to show potential clients your value.

 

Here are a few things I think you can improve:

 

Title: Your title will look more appealing when focused on a skill area, but without other descriptive words. For example, your title should be Virtual Assistant or Executive Virtual Assistant.

 

Overview/Summary: Your summary has good content but you need more to show clients your value. For example:

 

  • Talk about your typing speed, accuracy, attention to detail, and how you can maintain quality standards.
  • Also talk about your time management and organizational skills.
  • You mentioned Microsoft Office, but an executive virtual assistant must be proficient with other tools. Mention any other software applications you are familiar with.
  • Also, talk about your ability to solve administrative problems and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

 

Remember--you are competing with hundreds of thousands (maybe 1+ million) virtual assistants, so clients need several reasons to choose you.

 

Portfolio: I recommend adding one or two more items to your portfolio. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression and clients like to see visual examples of work/services. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

 

Skills: You are missing an important skill category in your skills list. I highly suggest adding Virtual Assistance since you use it in your title and should use it in your summary. Upwork uses these skill categories to match you with relevant jobs, and to help your profile appear in search results when clients search for virtual assistants.

 

Everything else looks good. Your profile is on the right track.

Can you find a way to work in a sentence or two (or three) that says, "I am an expert life coach with ____ years experience who can improve your life in the following ways _____________" 

 

What you have is a bit of an advertisement. A profile is designed to get people to feel comfortable with you. This is the Internet. They don't know you from Adam (or Eve, in this case).  As such, a profile is a little more generous than an advertisement.

Your writing is jargon-prone -- three syllable words that are a bit vague, like "management" and "processes." Can you get it down to earth a little bit?

I often recommend people who are jargon-oriented pretend there is a camera following them around. What does that camera see? Does it see you making phone calls or holding Zoom conferences? Does it see you writing goal-oriented recommendations and giving them to clients? Does it see you talking to people? 


People like to know what they are paying for. What is it you actually do that isn't vague, like "organizational enhancement." 

I'm not saying remove what you've got ... just add a few user friendly sentences that are more tangible than glossy.

 

Having said that, why $78 per hour? That sounds a bit odd. I think $80 sounds more professional. Why equivocate? (Just a thought.)

I think your profile looks good.

 

In your overview/summary, I would combine the first sentence with the first paragraph since they provide similar information. Also, you might want to add more details about your work processes. For example:

 

  • Tell clients how you define milestones and timelines when working on their project.
  • Do you provide unlimited revisions? Do you offer follow-up support after a web project is completed?
  • Talk about your attention to detail and how you maintain quality standards.
  • Highlight any similar projects you have worked on and your accomplishments.
  • Talk about your ability to meet business challenges and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

 

Clients looking for WordPress or Front-End Developers will find hundreds of thousands of them on Upwork. The question is, do they have enough good reasons to choose you? The information you provide can help them better understand why they should hire you and how it will benefit them.

 

I think your portfolio, skills, project catalog, certifications, and employment history look good.

Online, there is a hierarchy of assignments. The basic place to start is writing blogs. After that, you move up to content writing. After that, you go to SEO assignments.

 

Each of these assignments have different expectations. Blogs have the most leeway in terms of expectations. Content next. SEO articles next.

 

That said, declaring yourself to be new to this is a very bad idea. In the first place, scammers look for profiles exacly like yours. You have painted a target on your back. 

 

Just like walking through the wrong part of town, you have to have an assertive stride. You have to pretend you know what you're doing, not wave a flag saying, "I don't know much about this ... but I'm willing to try."

So, look around Upwork for blog and content writers and see how they pull it off. That's the place to start.

If need be, you can write proposal letters that say you are new to this ... but I really don't recommend that as a way to get jobs. If people pay you money, they will always have expectations and you have to meet those expectations. Research blogs. Read as many as you can. Get an idea of what's expected. Look up content writing. Read about it. Find some content-style articles and read those. (They are all over the place. The Internet is probably half content writing and blogs.)  

Write some stories for yourself ... assign yourself some blog stories and some content stories. Then you can say, you have some experience. Then, even if you assigned them to yourself, you have some writing samples. 

 

There were 1.5 million writers on Upwork as of 2019, so now it's closer to 2 million. When a client hires one, they want to make sure their risk is reasonable, so they want experienced writers who can say, "I know how to get this done." Your approach is very sketchy. You'll be standing in line with almost 2 million others. Get some legitimate experience and then write a profile that sounds as professional as you can imagine.  Don't come off as someone new at this -- that's a disaster waiting to happen.

It sounds simple, but the best way to secure clients is to have marketable skills and subject matter expertise clearly displayed in your profile. This experience and your qualifications should also be evident in your proposals/cover letters. In my opinion, this is the best way to attract clients.

 

I lookked at your profile and it makes a really good start. However, there isn't enough information to convince clients to hire you. Here are my suggestions to improve your profile:

 

Overview/Summary: Good information in your summary, but I think it needs more substance. First, you use highlights when sentences and a conversational tone are best. For example:

 

I'm a versatile virtual assistant ready to optimize your workflow and enhance your productivity. I have a strong background in administrative support and customer service with a keen eye to detail. I specialize in managing schedules, streamlining operations and providing efficient solutions to meet your needs.

 

In addition to general and advance administrative support using Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel PowerPoint), I can also provide social media management for Tiktok, Instagram, and Facebook, and manage schedules and book appointments using tools like Calendly and Visuals. I am also proficient with graphic design tools like Canva.

 

(Now, add more substance. [see below].)

 

In addition to telling clients about your services, provide a little detail about your approach to providing those services and why your method is beneficial to them. For example:

 

  • Describe your biggest strengths and why they should matter to the client.
  • Talk about your typing speed, accuracy, attention to detail, and how you can maintain quality standards.
  • Talk about your ability to solve administrative problems and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.
  • What other value will your services bring (e.g., cost savings, risk reduction, time savings, better work-life balance, flexibility, etc.)

 

Remember--you are competing with hundreds of thousands of virtual assistants, so clients need several reasons to choose you, and the information you provide can help them better understand why they should hire you and how it will benefit them.

 

Portfolio: Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

 

Project Catalog: You should also consider adding a project catalog. The project catalog allows you to setup a pre-packaged service that clients can buy without you sending a proposal. Due to higher than usual requests for project catalogs, reviews and approvals are taking a minimum of 10 business days. Read Get Started With Project Catalog for more information.

 

Your skills and employment history look good.

Good start to your profile, but you need more information in your overview/summary to convince clients to hire you. There are hundreds of thousands of data analysts, data scientists, and data engineers on Upwork, so clients need more than great skills and proficiencies to hire you. Here is what I suggest adding to your summary:

 

  • Tell clients how you will communicate and gather feedback to ensure the final deliverables meet their needs.
  • Talk about staying informed of latest developments, trends, and emerging technologies in data science.
  • Mention that you can uphold ethical standards, protect proprietary data/information, and use responsible practices for data collection and analysis.
  • Mention your time management and organizational skills.
  • Highlight any similar projects you have worked on and your accomplishments.

 

Clients are looking for reasons to choose you and the information you provide can help them better understand why they should hire you and how it will benefit them.

 

The items in your portfolio look good, but I strongly suggest converting the files to PDF so that clients are easily access them. Many clients cannot open Jupyter Notebook files (IPYNB file) and my be cautious about downloading and extracting RAR files. Your portfolio will get more attention if you use PDF documents.

I recommend removing the star emojis from the first part of your overview/summary. Removing the stars will allow clients to see more of the testimonial you provided. Also, remove this:

 

"Hello Awesome Client"

"Welcome to my profile I'm Daniel":

 

Even though not at the beginning of your summary, these statements waste space and provide no value to the client.

 

I think the other areas of your profile look good.

Hello! I haven't gotten any project on upwork. I've spent a lot of connects. My proposals were sometimes viewed but I was rarely interviewed. My profile was not viewed at all. Can someone check my profile and tell me what's wrong?
