Hello everyone, I am new to this freelancing community and it'll be really helpful to get suggestions on my upwork profile

Hello Meghla,

Welcome to Upwork.

The first thing you should do is change your Photo. Your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face; not a graphic or avatar. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

Since you are new to Upwork, you have to make sure your profile is 100% complete before applying to jobs. At a minimum, you should do the following:

Hi Khedri,

There are several things you should work on to improve your profile:

Title: Your title needs to be more specific. Upwork cannot match you with translation jobs unless it knows what type of translating you can do. I suggest: English/Arabic/French Translator

Education: Your education seems disconnected. You have University of Sacramento, but it includes the phrase "High school degree, Translation."

Overview/Summary: You spend most of your summary talking about your experience and how proficient you are with translation software and language services. Clients expect to read about your skills and qualifications, but they really want to know how your skills/qualifications will benefit them. The first two sentences are important because the client will read them first, so you should write something that is strong and impactful.

So, each time you tell clients how great you are, also tell them how it benefits them. Clients are looking for results, so they need to know how your greatness will help them. For example:

  • You say:  "My extensive experience includes translating a wide range of texts, from legal and technical documents to literature and marketing materials."

  • Then tell the client: "This allows me to help your business by expertly preparing, managing and translating your data, documentation, and materials accurately and in your desired language and voice."

  • You say: "I have also had the opportunity to collaborate with linguistic experts and attend language immersion programs in countries where Arabic and French are spoken."

  • Then tell the client: "I use this experience to create precise translations and voiceovers in English, Arabic, and French, which generates robust, highly effective content for your readers in either language."

Portfolio: Add more items to your portfolio to showcase your skills and demonstrate your experience. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Skills: Add more skill categories to your skills list. The biggest reason to update your skills categories is so clients can find you when they search for your specific skills, and so Upwork’s matching algorithms can better match you with relevant jobs.

Hi Stefan,

Welcome to Upwork.

I reviewed your profile and you have made a good start. However, there are a few things you should update:

Title: Your title has "Project Management" twice, and this is un

Overview/Summary: Remove the first line: "Project Manager/Scrum Master." The first two sentences of your summary are important because the client sees them when searching for freelancers, and those sentences should be impactul, and convince potential clients to click and read your profile. You don't want to waste that space with an unnecessary title.

Much of your summary speaks about your experience. That's okay, but you should focus on a potential client's needs. Clients expect to read about your skills and qualifications, but they really want to know how your skills/qualifications will benefit them. Also, add some spacing in between paragraphs to make it easier for clients to read. Maybe you could be more client-focused and add spacing this way:

Influential, resourceful, and knowledgeable Project Manager with 15+ years of experience leading and completing Agile-based technical solutions development and deployment projects. I have been effective in unifying teams, eliminating barriers to success, and minimizing risks to achieve and surpass my client's expectations as demonstrated through experience as an IT Project Manager and Scrum Master at fintech and telecom sectors.

I'm an adept innovator and progress advocate who prioritizes your projects--even when under high-pressure demands and environments to deliver scope-compliant and fully-optimized deliverables. I can lead your internal customers and teams in developing and maintaining your projects or program iterations such as scope, approach, planning, resources, and estimates for on-site or cloud-based IT projects.

KEY EXPERTISE

* Agile Project Management

* Team Supervision & Mentorship

* Progress Monitoring & Reporting

* Solutions Design & Deployment

* Conflict/Issue Resolution

* End-User Training

* Scope Development & Alignment

* Stakeholder Communication

* External & Internal Liaison

Let's talk about your project and how I can help.

Portfolio: A portfolio might not be necessary for a project manager, but I would still addd a portfolio to showcase your skills and demonstrate your experience. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

After you make these updates, start applying for jobs that match your qualifications and skills by writing great cover letters. In your cover letters, always make sure you create a custom response based on the client's job. Focus on the client's specific points in their job description; highlight your qualifications; and tell the client how you will meet their requirements.

Hello Adelfa,

I reviewed your profile and I have a few suggestions to help improve it:

Title: Give yourself a more specific title like Data Entry Specialist or Data Entry Operator or Virtual Assistant | Data Entry Specialist.

Overview/Summary: Keep in mind that data entry work is extremely competitive on Upwork, so getting jobs will be a huge challenge. Because of that, you have to make your summary as strong as possible.

First, don't talk about being "aspiring" or "new" -- clients don't care. Clients only care about getting results and how you can help them meet their needs. Next, you need to focus on potential clients by telling them how your services will benefit them. Finally, since it is difficult to get data entry jobs, you need to add more content that convinces a client that you are their best option.

Focus on the client and add more content. Maybe something like:

I am Virtual Assistant / Data Encoder with a range of skills and services to help you elevate your online presence, promote your products, and boost your business by ensuring your data entry and virtual assistance tasks are completed to your satisfaction.

Are you stuck managing tasks like data entry, file maintenance, and scheduling when you should be focusing on the bigger picture?  I can take on a variety of tasks and responsibilities and help you meet aggressive deadlines by preparing and managing your data and documentation; organizing your schedules and calendars; conducting data research and data collection using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Google Sheets, Google Docs, and Internet research; managing inbound and outbound orders; and managing your B2B customer relationships.

I am well-organized, focused, resourceful, and have a genuine interest in helping my clients by meeting their virtual assistance and data entry needs. I have been highly successful due to my reliability, professionalism, and dedication. I use a combination of research, analytics, and development to provide you with timely, accurate virtual assistance and administrative services.

Why choose me over other freelancers?
✔ Full-Time Virtual Assistant with Data Entry Expertise
✔ 10+ years of Experience in Customer Support

✔ Focused On Timeliness and Quality
✔ 100% Satisfaction Guarantee

My attention to details, ability to work in a fast-paced environment and dedication to all tasks while maintaining accuracy has made me an ideal choice for other clients. I'm ready to learn about your systems, programs, projects, and your business.

I'm available for a video call through Upwork to discuss your projects and how I can help you. Let's talk!

Portfolio: Add more items to your portfolio to showcase your skills and demonstrate your experience. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Skills: Be sure to list more skill categories, but only if they are relevant to the services you provide.

It is important to keep your skills list updated with relevant skills categories so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.

After you make these updates, start applying for jobs that match your qualifications and skills by writing great cover letters. In your cover letters, always make sure you create a custom response based on the client's job. Focus on the client's specific points in their job description; highlight your qualifications; and tell the client how you will meet their requirements.

Hello Upwork Freelancers,

Please review my profile and provide feedback. I am definietly new to this site and trying to make sure I am doing all I can to set it up correctly and use it efficiently.

Thank you!

Hello Upwork community, I'm looking for suggestions on improving my Upwork profile.https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~0145701577c6ee4fea

I sent many proposals but did not get a job. Please review my profile and give feedback.

Hi Faheem,

I will suggest adding testimonials if you have one and also an introduction video. Good luck

Alicia,

Hello, Rochester. Boy, I've been reviewing profiles for a long time and I don't think I've ever seen one in my neighborhood. I'm two hours east of Rochester.

Anyway ... you're profile is almost there. What it does is it leans just slightly towards the mindset of someone looking for a job. In freelance, you already have a job. You work for yourself. More specifically, you might get a job offer and accept it anytime you like, but a freelance business should do better than that. If I got a staff writing offer, I would say, no, thanks, I'm doing fine on my own.

Anyway, I have a few items to point out. First, you start with a rhetorical question. "Need help ...?" They already know they need help, so you're wasting their time by asking them that. It's not information they need. You're a mouse-click away from rejection, so you can't waste their time. Click. They're gone.

You then say you are "fast learning." That gets the buzzer sound -- eeeeehh. A freelancer works for themself, so they are expected to be experts. They are not supposed to learn on the job. That just another way of saying, "I will spend your money stumbling around, when I should be getting you results." So, you can learn on the job all you like, but don't tell people that. Tell people you are a pro who knows what they are doing and will get them results on time.

You have TONS of great experience. So you really should just upgrade your assertions. Don't say "I have experience," say, instead, "I am an expert with experience."

The word "expert" carries a lot of weight around here. Your clients want to hire an expert. They don't want to hire someone who is learning, stumbling around or making mistakes. Employees make mistakes and you train them and point that out to them. Freelancers do not work for the company, so there is no room for making mistakes. Nobody is going to train you or be kind to you here when you botch something.

You have so much experience that you should be able to say, "I have helped _____ size companies meet regulations, prepapre for taxes, avoid or survive audits ..." Put this in tangible terms that speaks to the concerns your clients have. Why do they hire accountants? To prepare for meetings ... to surive audits ... to help with decision-making.

That's what you should write ... if not word for word something that sounds like, "I am an expert accountant who can clafify issues so you can make better decisions."

Making better decisions is why they hire you. So why don't you spell that out for them in your profile? Avoiding audits is why they hire you. You should say "I can help you avoid audits."

That's what you should write about. Yes, you might mention quickbooks and alll those applications, but that's a pretty boring thing to read. Nobody really reads those lists. They glance at them. You have to convince people you are an expert. Talk the talk. Tell them you can walk the walk and get them results.

Hi Upwork Comunity Im new here. Can anyone review my profile and let me know if there is need some chnges to attract client.

Thank you!!!

Anmol,

Can you write about some of your past successes and the choices you made that were effective? That would help give your claims more credibility. Write about your craft. Write about the gains your clients will reap if they hire you.

Nice profile, you have already earned, thats great, Keep it up.

Carlota,

Freelance work is not the same as looking for employment. Freelance work is about selling a service to people and, as it turns out, the more specific you are the better chances you have. For example, somone who is a proofreader is perhaps worth $15 per hour. But someone who proofreads law documents is worth $30 or $40 per hour.

Your profile is just a list of skills you have. This forces the client to figure out what service you are selling. That is a bad way to start. You don't start by making the client make decisions for you.

Running through your short write up: You wrote: Excellent Spanish." That's not a service. What are you selling? You wrote, "Experience in labor relations." That's also not a service. What are you selling? You wrote: "Creative, proactive, organized, and responsible." None of those are services. Then you wrote, "Actively looking to take on new challenges and explore new ways forward." Again, there's no service you are selling that is clear to me and you are making someone else choose for you. Nobody is going to choose a job for you. You have to do that yourself. You then wrote "Energy medicine, web research, data entry, virtual assistance, customer service, and content writing," Some of those are services, but you don't sell us on any of them.

Check out other Upwork profiles of successful freelancers. It might give you some ideas on how this works.

Hi Petra!

What a FANTASTIC profile you got there! Would you mind having a quick look at mine and hitting me with the hard truth?

I'm up for a beat if that's the case! 🤣

Hi Mirian,

Welcome to Upwork.

Yes, it can take some time to win jobs, and you will likely have to send many more proposals before you land your first job.

I looked over your profile and I have a few suggestions:

Title: Your title is fine, but you should add some spacing to make it easier to read in searches: Accounting | Bookkeeping | Xero | QuickBooks | Reconciliation A/P and A/R or QuickBooks | Xero Bookkeeper.

Overview/Summary: Your summary talks about your background and experience, but you should focus more on the potential client's needs. Clients expect to read about your skills and qualifications, but they really want to know how your skills/qualifications will benefit them. The first two sentences are important because the client will see them in searches, so you should write something that convinces them to click and read your entire profile.

I suggest using material in your current summary and revising it to tell clients how it benefits them. For example:

Are you looking for a reliable, detail-oriented accounting/bookkeeping expert who will effectively manage time and prioritize your invoices, reconciliations, payables and receivables, and other bookkeeping tasks? Count me in! I have 10+ years of experience with classification and issuing of invoices, bank reconciliation, payables and receivables, payroll, and taxes.

I have provided accounting services to companies in various sectors such as IT data center, health care, telecommunications, recycling, and product wholesalers. My diversity allows me to immediately understand your business financials and fully manage your accounting from setup to closing cycle, no matter which business sector you're in.

My clients request a variety of tax consultancy services, tax preparation support, lodgement, and preparation of financials, and compliance tasks for their accounting or bookkeeping needs. I work closely with you to provide each of these services by ensuring all of your data and documentation are accurate and ready for a planned or unplanned audit.

I also participated in the migration of systems such as SAP, Oracle, Sage, Xero, QuickBooks. Through my experience with these tools, I can maintain your accounting systems and documents by classifying, examining, analyzing, reconciling, and reporting of financial transactions while ensuring compliance of applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

(You could list some tools of expertise here if you want)

-------I have expertise in the following bookkeeping software:-------

✦ QuickBooks Online (Certified)

✦ QuickBooks Desktop

✦ Xero

✦ Sage

✦ Wave Accounting

✦ SAP

I am looking forward to discussing a new project with you. Let's talk!

Portfolio: I think you need a few more items in your portfolio to demonstrate your experience. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. So, a few more reconciliation documents, a data migration screenshot, some more QuickBooks screenshots, etc. would be good.

Skills: Be sure to add more skill categories, but only if they are relevant to your title and overview/summary, and other parts of your profile. The skills categories help clients find you when they search for your specific skills, and Upwork also uses these skill categories to match you with relevant jobs.

Your certifications and employment history are good.

Hi M Ameer,

There is good content in your profile, but here are areas you might want to update:

Photo: Your profile photo isn't bad, but it should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

Title: Remove the "|" at the beginning of your title.

Overview/Summary: Your summary is really long and clients don't usually read a summary that takes requires them to scroll. More importantly the first few sentences in your profile need to be fixed. The first two sentences are important because the client sees them when searching for freelancers, and these sentences must be impactful, so the client is convinced to click and read your profile. Also, remove your name. Clients can already see your name on your profile.

I suggest you revise the first few paragraphs of your summary and remove the repeated skills/qualification. Maybe something like this:

I'm a full-time Lead Generation expert with 5+ years of experience driving sales to businesses using a highly effective lead generation support strategy. I can find and verify contact information of businesses and their leaders and decision-makers. If you need verified email addresses that do not bounce, I can locate, qualify, and complete the tedious tasks while you focus on running your business.

I enthusiastic about providing high quality leads and generating sales for your business. I am honest, reliable, accurate, and fast, and I am quick to grasp new ideas and concepts and develop creative solutions to problems. This will prove important as I apply these skills to help you quickly develop lead generation campaigns that produce sales and grow your business.

Lead generation may sound simple, but you need someone who intuitively understands what you want done and doesn’t hesitate to ask if there are areas that need to be clarified.

👉🏼Skills and Expertise:

(The content after this is fine. It's lengthy, but it should be fine for now.)

Everything else in your profile looks okay.

Finally, a lot of freelancers—even Top-Rated and Top-Rated Plus—are finding it difficult to get profile views and responses to their proposals. Keep applying for jobs that match your qualifications/skills by writing great cover letters. Always create a custom cover letter based on the client's specific job requirements. Focus on the client's needs and job requirements; highlight your qualifications; and tell the client how you will meet their needs.

Good luck!

Hi Rodrigo,

Welcome to Upwork.

I reviewed your profile and I have a few suggestions that might help improve it:

Title: Make your title specific, but leave out words like "and". Also, remove the "experience" part; you can save that for your overview/summary. (i.e., Administrative Assistant | Virtual Secretary)

Overview/Summary: Most of the personal information in the first few sentences of your profile won't mean much to clients. Clients only care about how you can help them. Also, the first two sentences are important because the client sees them when searching for freelancers. These sentences must be impactful so the client is convinced to click and read your profile.

The second and third paragraphs are good (especially the second paragraph!), but the third paragraph could use a few adjustments to focus more on potential clients. For example, you might revise your summary like this:

I'm an energetic Administrative Assistant with a degree in Business Administration and 7+ years of experience in various administrative fields. I love helping businesses become more efficient and successful, and I am passionate about the business world.

As a virtual secretary and administrative service provider, I can help you manage your daily tasks, organize your schedule, coordinate your meetings, and much more. Additionally, I am a native Portuguese speaker and have advanced Spanish skills, which allows me to work with clients from different countries and cultures.

I offer my services to companies seeking highly skilled and reliable professionals. With my administrative assistance and virtual secretary services, you can expect impeccable professionalism, a willingness and readiness to work with you to achieve your goals, clear and transparent communication, and above all, impressive results.

I'm available for a video call through Upwork to discuss your projects and how I can help you.

Let's talk!

Portfolio: Add a portfolio to showcase your skills and demonstrate your experience. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Your skills and employment history are good.

Hi John Mark,

I reviewed your profile and I have a few suggestions that might help improve it:

Title: There probably shouldn't be two "proofreading" terms in your title. I suggest you shorten your title to somthing like: Editing & Proofreading Services |  Academic Editing

Overview/Summary: You provide a lot of background, experience and personality information in your summary, but you should focus on a potential client's needs instead. Clients expect to read about your skills and qualifications, but they really want to know how your skills/qualifications will benefit them. The first two sentences are important because the client will read them first, so you should write something that is strong and impactful.

When revising your summary, every time you mention how great you are or how much experience you have, tell the client how your greatness or experience will help them. Clients care about getting results, so focus on how you can meet the clients needs.

Also, add some spacing between paragraphs to make it easier for clients to read.

Skills: Add more skill categories to your skills list, but only if they are relevant to your title, summary and overall profile. It is important to keep your skills list updated with relevant skills categories so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.

Hello Adil,

I reviewed your profile and I have a few suggestions that might help improve it:

Overview/Summary: There isn't enough information in your summary to tell clients how you can help them. You list graphic design tools and applications you use, but this doesn't tell potential clients how you will get results or meet their requirements.

A typical format for starting a summary is something like:

I am a diligent and highly creative Graphic Artist and CAD Designer with _____ years of experience developing vivid images and designs for my clients. I love to work with creative projects and my goal is to help you bring your visions to reality by designing colorful, attractive graphics within your budget.

I specialze in creating graphics and images that effectively project your brand to your customers. I use AutoCAD, CorelDraw and other tools to help small and big business stand out among their competitors. I accomplish this by creating and enabling an environment where you and I discuss each project to ensure you are 100% satisfied with the final product.

What can I provide for you?

✶ 2D CAD drawings (DXF, DWG)

✶ Fillable and editable PDF forms

✶ Vector graphics conversion (SVG, EPS, AI)

✶ Product packaging (Box Design) model preparation

✶ Drawing for pre-print cutting molds

✶ Engraving and Cutting drawing for laser

Ready to discuss your design needs? Let's talk!

I'm available for a video call through Upwork Zoom to discuss your projects and how I can help.

Employment History: Add short job descriptions for each job in your employment history.

After you make these updates, start applying for jobs that match your qualifications and skills by writing great cover letters. In your cover letters, always make sure you create a custom response based on the client's job. Focus on the client's specific points in their job description; highlight your qualifications; and tell the client how you will meet their requirements.
