Ghulam,

I suggest rewriting the first part of your overview/summary to focus on the client--do not focus on yourself. Clients come to Upwork looking for freelancers who can help them get results. The start of your summary talks about your own goals and your skills. Instead, start your summary by telling clients what you can do and how it helps them.

Only the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients in searches, so you want to make sure you tell clients--within the first two sentences--how you can help them.

Add a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients.

Hello Sandunika,

As a freelancer, you are not looking for a job as an employee. Instead, you are a business providing services to other businesses (clients).

Your title needs to focus on a specific skill area. If you are a web developer, your title should say Web Developer. Then, your summary should tell clients which web development services you provide and why you are the best freelancer for them.

Since you are new to Upwork, make sure your profile is 100% complete before applying to jobs. The best way to get your profile setup is to go through the following Academy Courses and Learning Paths:

Hello Kaushik,

Your profile is incomplete.

Correct the spelling of your title. It should be Writer.

Hello Aneeq,

I think your profile has a good approach. You probably need to add a few more portfolio items; clients will expect to see several visuals from a web developer.

Also, add relevant skill categories like Web Development to your skills list.  It is important to keep your skills list updated with relevant skills categories so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.

Finally, add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history.

Hello Denis,

I looked through your profile and I have a few suggestions:

1) Capitalize "designer" to help your title stand out: Graphic Designer

2) Remove the greeting: "Hello, my name is Denis I'm 19 years old." Clients can see only the first two sentences of your summary, so you want the most important information in those sentences. You do not want to waste space with a greeting and your name; clients can see your name on your profile.

3) Be sure to add more graphic design related skill categories to your skills list. You should include skill categories like Graphic Design and Banner Ad Design.

Muhammad Faizan,

I think your profile looks good. Your overview/summary is a bit long and most clients might not read all of it. But it is informative.

The other areas of your profile look fine. I do not see any problems that would prevent a client from hiring you.

Muhammad,

I normally tell freelancers to focus their title and summary on a specific skill area or niche, but you do a good job of explaining your different skill areas and how you can help prospective clients.

The only suggestion I have is to add one or two more items to your portfolio.

Everything else looks good.

Thanks, Clark S. I need some help with my portfolio. I know my portfolio section is weak. I have done more than 20 projects in lead generation, But I never understand how I show them in the area if I add a screenshot of my sheet, the community standards are affected, as their phone numbers, and email are visible. What is the better way to show my work? The second thing My project catalog is not visual or very low rank, how do I improve the visibility of the project catalog? Regards,

Hey Upwork community! I'm looking for suggestions on improving my Upwork as I am only getting started ๐Ÿ™‚

Profile: https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~01e64ed94a664bef64

I do send a lot of proposals, some leads are generated as well. But due to low budget or one thing or another am not able to close the deal. Need suggestions!

Thanks!

Muhammad Hamza,

There is no trick to closing the deal. As long as you create well-written. custom cover letters that show you are the best freelancer for the job, you are doing all you can.

I looked through your profile and everything looks fine. I do not see many more improvements you could make and I do not see any problems that would prevent a client from hiring you.

Good luck!

Amir,

You make a lot of pretty grand promises. I wonder if you should bring it down to earth just a bit.

I know, it's kind of a crapshoot, but I've worked for a lot of pubishers and 99 percent of them aren't that interested in publishing content that aims for a Nobel prize. They want infomative pieces that are clear and easy to ready, but interesting. Most of them, in my experience, aren't that interested in "digestible gems." And many are scared off by people who promise to be creative. Creative writing is not what they want. And, while I didn't see the word "creative" in your writeup, you pretty clearly indicate that this is what you like to write.

Again, it's a crapshoot. I think you're over-reaching. It's well-written ... "digestible gems" is a pretty fair turn of phrase. But it does seem like you're promising much more than is practical and this might work against you.

Just for example, I've been writing for 30 years and more and all I need for my troubles is a paycheck. I don't need somone to say, "Hey, that was really well written." That isn't what gets me out of bed.

Subsequently, you sound eager, but eager isn't exactly professional. Professional writers say "I can get it to you by Friday." They don't say "engaging readers like never before ..." That's just such a high-minded promise ... I just think you should tone it down a little.

Hello Upwork community, Have a look at my profile and let me know your thoughts! Thank you.

https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~01b609f2b1eae9669e

Nechelle,

You have a lot to offer, certainly. Reflecting that, however, your profile is a bit scattered.

I'll get to that in a second, but first ditch this paragraph:

"If you're looking for a proactive, tech-savvy virtual assistant with a "๐’„๐’‚๐’ ๐’…๐’" attitude, look no further. I have one goal in mind - to free up your day so you'll be able to focus your energy on the core aspects of your business and personal life.

Well, the second sentence isn't the worst .... but the first sentence dooms the paragraph, because it falls under the category of rhetorical. Your clients already know they're looking for a proactive, tech-savvy virtual assistant with a can-do attitude. So this paragraph tells them nothing new. It's just fill.

The rest of your write-up seems OK. It could be a touch stronger, but I think you could tinker for a week and not be that much further ahead. However, then comes those unholy lists of things you can do.

First, nobody reads those lists. People read narratives ... "I've been a bookkeeper for small and large companies, not-for-profit and personal clients." If you write a narrative, people get to know you a little. If you write a list, it's like they are being asked to hire a machine.

People hire people they think they will get along with. You should be firm, but friendly. They also want to hire professionals and professionals know how to talk the talk. What do business people want to hear? They want to hear that you get results. "My bookkeeping skills have taken businesses books froma confused muddle to crystal clear financial pictures that comply with local and federal regulations ..."

Tell them those kinds of things ... what can you do and what they get out of it. But do so in a narrative form.

Lastly if you stick with those lists, rest assured they are 30 times longer than anyone will ever read. Focus on your best skills and say something like, "My services are not limited to just these, but my strengths are ..." Clients are smart. I often tell people to spoonfed clients what they want to hear, but not if the list goes to 40 or 50 items. That's a bit much. In my humble opinion.

Hello Ashek,

I think your profile is very good, but there are a few things I noticed:

1) It might sound nitpicky, but I think you should change your profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

2) Your overview/summary is well-written and provides clients good information about your services. However, I think you should adjust your title  and make it more focused.

When prospective clients see "Professional Writer and Editor," their minds will run wild. Unless you also write books, short stories, essays, white papers, etc., you may want to create a more specific title based on web content writing (i.e., articles, product descriptions, blog posts, marketing materials, etc.) For example, I would say: Content Writer & Editor | Web, Articles, Marketing or Writer/Editor (Web Content, Articles, Marketing) or something that distinguishes your writing skill from other writing professions.

The other areas of your profile look good.

Hi David,

Welcome to Upwork.

I like the start to your profile, but I want to focus on the first paragraph of your overview/summary and more importantly, the first two sentences. Why? Because the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. You have a very small window of opportunity to grab their attention. Clients care about results, so you need to tell them--within those first two sentences--what you can do for them.

Your first paragraph is great, but considering what I mentioned above, I would revise it like this:

I'm a Smartsheet Automation expert who helps businesses maximize the capabilities of their Smartsheet platform. I can help you automate processes, create efficient workflows, increase employee production, reduce errors, and deliver valuable data to your stakeholders, empowering them to make informed decisions.

I basically took the information in your first paragraph and made it more client-focused by telling prospective clients what you can do, rather than what you have experience with. You talk about experience later, which is great, and I think a revised first paragraph will generate more client clicks and profile views.

Next, add a portfolio to show examples of your work or Smartsheet samples. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression and clients love visuals. If you donโ€™t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

I think the other areas of your profile look good. I do not see any huge problems or issues that would prevent a client from hiring you.

Good luck!

Hi Upwork Community, can you please check my profile and tell me how i can be better. I would also like to know i can get good jobs. Thank you so much.

Is visibility set appropriately? Also want to make sure you're at 100% profile completion. Hope this helps!

Hi Ayomide,

Your profile has the minimum information, but this is not enough to convince clients to hire you as a graphic designer.

I suggest changing your profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

Then, add more information to your overview/summary that tells clients which graphic design services you provide and how you can meet their needs. Remove the information about being a proofreader and fluency in English and Yoruba language since these are unrelated to graphic design.

It is also important to add a portfolio; every client will expect to see sample designs from a graphic designer.

Make sure your profile is 100% complete before applying to jobs. The best way to do that is to go through the following Academy Courses and Learning Paths:

From the screenshots, I'm not seeing much that needs to be improved. You should add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history.

Your profile visibility can be set to public without receiving contracts. In fact, no client can see you in searches unless your profile is set to public. Clients will only see you when you send proposals and most clients never view all proposals.
