Hi Zainab,

Landing clients can be difficult, especially for new freelancers, and it has become more competitive over the last few years.

I looked through your profile and everything looks good. Your title, summary, skills and portfolio are in sync. The other areas of your profile look good. I do not see any problems or issues that would prevent a client from hiring you.

Keep applying to jobs by writing great cover letters; hopefully, you will win some soon.

Hello Sonia,

I think your profile looks fine, but I would make a few changes to your overview/summary. I suggest removing the first sentence: "My name is Sonia and I am here to write EXCELLENT RESEARCH PAPERS for you. Why? Because the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. You have a very small window of opportunity to grab their attention, so you should start with the customer quote.

Also, be sure to add more relevant skill categories to your skills list. I think Acadmic Writing, Essay Writing, and Article Writing are good fits for your skills list.

The other areas of your profile look good.

Hello Andrea and Upwork team,

I am new to Freelance work. I am not sure my profile will attract any lucrative jobs. Can anyone give me feedback on what it should look like for this type of work?

Also, I set my hourly rate at $20/hr, as that is what my current wage is at. Is that too high. or too low?

Thanks, and I look forward to exploring all that Upwork has to offer.

Hello John,

The best way to make your profile attractive to clients is to briefly tell them who you are and how you can help them. You might seem obvious since you are an English teacher, but there are almost one million clients here, and you never know what their needs are.

For your type of work, I suggest starting your overview/summary by quickly mentioning your background, and immediately mentioning the services you provide. This can be achieved by rephrasing your current content, adding a few services, and being more assertive.

The trick is to say all of this within the first two sentences of your summary. Why? Because the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. You have a very small window of opportunity to grab their attention. Clients care about results, so you need to tell them--within those first two sentences--what you can do for them.

For example:

I'm an accomplished English teacher who is relentless in his pursuit of excellence in helping others improve their English language skills. I can provide lesson planning, curriculum development, instructional design, and training delivery using dynamic leadership, effective coaching, and impactful teaching.

I can provide individual, small group, and large group English training using personalized and engaging instructional techniques. My goal is to produce a highly effective learning environment that allows students to vastly improve their English reading and writing skills.

I have cultivated a unique blend of skills, allowing me to excel in a multitude of roles. By leveraging my innate productivity, I navigated my way through college, earning an Associates of Science Degree with a stellar 3.8 cumulative GPA. My proven track record of success speaks to my ability to deliver results in even the most challenging environments.

ACHIEVEMENTS

(The list of achievements is good.)

Be sure to add relevant skill categories to your skills list. Since you are an English teacher, you should definitely add English Tutoring and Teaching English to your skills list. It is important to keep your skills list updated with relevant skills categories so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.

Next, add a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. You could probably add a sample or snapshot of a course program of instruction or lesson plan.

Finally, I think your hourly rate might be a little low for a freelance English teacher. Most U.S.-based freelancers providing identical services are between $30.00/hour - $70.00/hour. Much of that is based on experience and the type of services you provide, but I think $30.00/hour should be the minimum for someone with your background.

I think that's it, for now. Once you make these updates, I think clients will have a better understanding of the services you offer and how you can help meet their needs.

Hello Kiran,

I looked through your profile and I think you have made a good start. You should get your profile to 100% complete before sending proposals.

Add a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Also, make sure your skills list has up to 15 relevant skill categories. You should probably add Full-Stack Development and Software Development. It is important to keep your skills list updated with relevant skills categories so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.

Hi Candice,

Your profile should be 100% complete before applying to jobs.

First, your title should be specific and focused on a skill area or occupation. Avoid unnecessary words and simply say something like: Administrative Assistant or Administrative Expert.

Your overview/summary does not provide enough information for clients to know what services you provide and how you can help them. Add more substance to your summary that tells prospective clients about your administrative background, the administrative support services you can provide, and how those services will meet their needs.

The best way to get your profile completed is to go through the following Academy Courses and Learning Paths:

Hello everyone, I just got in here few hours ago and it's my first time here. I am looking forward to contributing the best of my knowledge in all tasks that will come my way. Please visit my profile and get give me feedbacks; tell me what to do be a top lancer, also inform me about best strategy use to make sure I get contracts here. Acknowledge my appreciation in principle.

celgins

Hello John,

The answers to the questions you ask require quite a bit of research and trial and error. The only way to be a top freelancer is to win jobs and complete them with great feedback. Also, there is no defined strategy to ensure you win contracts. It really comes down to trial and error, and learning how the platform works.

With regards to your profile, the first thing you should do is change your profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

Next, you need make your title specific and focused on a skill area or occupation. Then, your overview/summary should build upon your title. For example, if your title is Financial Accountant, your summary should talk about the accounting/financial services you can provide and how you can help clients with their accounting needs. Right now, your summary moves between several unrelated skill areas/occupations, and this will confuse clients.

Then, make sure your skills list includes skill categories that are relevant to your title and summary. You should also create a portfolio to show examples of your work.

Once you make these updates, I think clients will have a better understanding of the services you offer and how you can help meet their needs or solve their problems.

Hi Andrew Nuer,

I think your profile has good information and content. I think you need more items in your portfolio and the "HIRE ME" item does not provide any value to the portfolio. As a developer, clients will expect to see several examples of landing pages, web applications, etc. Make sure to add skill categories to each portfolio item.

You should also add short job descriptions for each job in your employment history.

Omolewa,

The first thing I noticed about your profile is your title. Most clients on Upwork are looking for highly skilled freelancers. When you say you are an "intermediate" and "aspiring data analyst," it will likely cause discomfort for many clients. You have quite a few data science and data analysis certifications and I think this qualifies as significant skills/qualifications. Clients care about results, and your number of completed projects won't matter too much if you can help the client get those results.

With that, I suggest would change your title to Data Analyst and revise the first paragraph of your overview/summary to sound more assertive. Doing this will make the start of your summary should have a bigger impact on clients because they see the first few sentences when searching for freelancers. Maybe something like this:

Highly skilled Data Analyst with a strong educational background and a passion for data-driven insights. I can apply data analytics concepts and techniques to ensure the accuracy and integrity of your organizations' systems and data. I provide informative data insights and architecture to better visualize your data and to automate processes, and I can handle a variety of data-related tasks.

You should also add a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant data analysis examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

The other areas of your profile look good.

Hello Andrea G,

Hello MD Faridur Rahman,

Andrea is an Upwork Moderator. She and other moderators provide valuable information to freelancers and moderate the Forums, but she does not provide profile reviews.

I looked through your profile and I have a few suggestions:

Title: Make your title more specific and focused on a skill area or occupation. Maybe something like: Data Management Specialist or Data Manager.

Overview/Summary: Your summary does not really get deep into the data management services you will provide. You mention experience with data entry, sorting and presentation, and perhaps you can make the first sentence more assertive and tell clients what you can do. For example:

I'm a Data Management Specialist with 6 years of experience providing data management and office administration services for medium- to large-sized organizations. I can help businesses with data entry, data sorting, presentation and visualization, budgeting, etc.

The information you provided below is not necessarily data management; rather, this is copy editing:

I will:

• Check spelling

• Check grammar

• Check sentence structure

• Provide minor rewrites, if feel it’s needed

Also, remove the information after Please note:  regarding the things you do not accept and the additional charges. This is a turn-off to most clients because they are looking for freelancers who can help them and often ignore those who have restrictions before a contract starts. It might be best to negotiate these notes after you win the contract.

Portfolio: Add a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Skills: We are allowed up to 15 skills, so you should add more skill categories if they apply to your services. It is important to keep your skills list updated with relevant skills categories so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.

Once you make these updates and get your profile focused on data management or office administration, I think clients will have a better understanding of the services you offer and how you can help meet their needs or solve their problems.

Hello. I am brand new to upwork on the recommendation of a friend. I am looking for some freelance work in editing, proofreading and/or lesson plan writing. I am a teacher with additional experience in sales and business climates and I am looking for part time (entry level right now) opportunities. I am interested in someone looking at my profile to tell me if you think it is done correctly and any hints or tips you might have on looking for or accepting jobs, including writing a good proposal. TIA

Hello Jane,

Welcome to Upwork.

I see really good information in your profile, but I think you can present a much stronger image to prospective clients. I have a few suggestions that might help you do that. Let's go through each area:

Title: I suggest removing the acronym for Rockford Public Schools; clients will have no idea what it means and Upwork's algorithm might show you a plethora of weird jobs because it won't recognize it either. My suggestion is to use Literacy Specialist.

Overview/Summary: The first thing I noticed about your summary is that it does not include the word "expert" and your background certainly says you are. I think you need to introduce yourself as an expert in the first sentence and use the second sentence to tell clients about the services you provide. Why do this in the first two sentences? Because the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. You have a very small window of opportunity to grab their attention, and if they see the word "expert" and your services, they are more likely to click.

With that, I would revise your first paragraph to make it a little stronger and condense the list into a paragraph, which should make your summary sound more client-focused. Maybe something like this:

I'm an expert literacy specialist, educator, and teacher specializing in reading and writing intervention. I have been teaching for over 40 years and I have helped thousands of students with reading, writing and proofreading; I have developed hundreds of lesson plans and assessments; and I have researched, written and approved curricula.

I can help individuals, small groups, and large organizations by using assessments to determine needs and develop specialized programs. I develop curriculum that helps improve students' reading skills and learning outcomes based on assessments and needs.

As an educator and advocate for literacy and learning, I can teach reading, writing, study skills, and music, and I have experience with writing, proofreading/editing, education presentations and training, teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), coordinating, grading and proctoring assessments, and conducting virtual/online teaching.

My goal is to work with you to develop a highly effective and engaging education program that meets the needs of your audience by contributing to their well-being and educational success.

You don't have to use this verbatim, but I think a little more substance will give prospective clients the information they need to reach out to you.

Portfolio: You should add a portfolio to show samples of your work. You can include sample lesson plans, curricular, course outlines, or anything to give clients a visual. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Also, if you want to do anything with sales--as you mention in your post--I suggest adding a Specialized Profile that focuses on sales/business services. This way, it will be separate from your literacy services, which is preferrable since those subjects are unrelated.

After you make these minor updates, start applying for jobs that match your qualifications by writing great cover letters. Write a custom cover letter based on the client's job:

1) Acknowledge the job you are applying for.

2) Highlight your qualifications.

3) Address specific points in the job by briefly explaining how you can meet their needs or solve their problem.

4) Request the client reach out to discuss their project or request an Upwork Zoom call.

For more tips on cover letters, read through Upwork's best practices on How To Write a Cover Letter.

I think that's it. The other areas of your profile look great.

Good luck!

Arthur,

A few things:

  • Freelancers do not really assist with your profile. We might offer feedback to help you improve your profile.

  • Right now, your profile is set to private. You must set your profile to Public if you want people to see it.

  • If you are using the same picture for your profile photo, you need to change it. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

  • Finally, you posted in one of the community blogs and included contact information. This is not allowed on Upwork, so you should remove it if you are allowed to edit that post.

Hello Maria Beatrice,

I think your profile looks good, but I have a few suggestions that might help improve it.

Title: The first part of your title is great. But Upwork suggests titles not include experience, and I agree that experience should be left out. Also, the first letter of each word should be capitalized and make your title stand out in searches: Award-Winning Digital Marketing Expert.

Overview/Summary: Your summary is strong, but I think the first few words in your first sentence should be removed. Why? Because the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. You have a very small window of opportunity to grab their attention, and telling clients that you are "ambitious, independent, and results-oriented" will not mean much to them. You can say those things, but it does not provide much value in the first sentence.

I suggest using adding more substance by telling prospective clients what you can do for them. Clients are looking for results and even though they will read about your achievements, they want to know how this will benefit them. For example, I would revise your summary this way:

I'm an accomplished marketing and communications expert with 10 years of experience in the digital and humanitarian sectors, working with social enterprises, media companies, tech startups, and physical businesses. I can help you grow your brand and drive demand with a highly effective digital marketing strategy I have used to increase revenues for multiple clients.

------------Key achievements:-------------
◉ Winner, Best Overall Social Presence, Lovie Awards 2021.
◉ Winner, Best Use of Photography, Websites and Mobile Sites, Webby Awards 2022.
◉ I helped companies grow their audiences by over 500.000 social media followers and 10 million website visitors.
◉ Trusted freelance marketing, PR, and communications consultant working with many brands as a strategic advisor to devise growth strategies resulting in consistent digital growth of at least 200% per quarter.

My clients request a variety of digital marketing solutions, and I have successfully delivered results due to my diverse background and my ability to process of create and deliver value to meet the needs of their target markets. I will use my expertise to help you generate more leads and higher traffic to your websites, strengthen the impact of your social media campaigns, and improve brand awareness through paid advertising solutions.

I am hyper-focused on digital marketing campaigns and completing the essential tasks that help optimize conversion rates. My goal is to develop a winning strategy that works in your market sector and improves your ROI.

Let's talk about your projects and how I can help.

Portfolio: Add a portfolio to show samples of your work. You cannot be an digital marketing guru and not have a portfolio. Every other digital marketing strategist I see has several items in their portfolios, so you are competing with them to win jobs. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

The other areas of your profile look good. I think if you add a little more substance, as suggested above, prospective clients will have a better understanding of the services you offer and how you can help meet their digital marketing needs or solve their problems.
