Hello Gatta,

Your profile is incomplete.

In your overview/summary, tell clients what you can do as a software engineer. Clients come to Upwork looking for results, so you must tell them which services you provide and how you can meet their needs.

Since you are new to Upwork, make sure your profile is 100% complete before applying to jobs. The best way to get your profile setup is to go through the following Academy Courses and Learning Paths:

Hello Aboubacar,

I think your profile looks great. Your overview/summary is concise and gives clients the information they need to understand how you can help them.

The other areas of your profile are good. I do not see any problems or issues that would prevent a client from hiring you.

Hi Fitri Valiana,

I looked through your profile and I think it looks good. Your overview/summary is good, but I suggest changing your list into a paragraph and putting it at the top of your summary. Why? Because only the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. Clients need to see something in the first two sentences that reveals the goals you can help them meet. Clients care about results, so you must to tell them--within those first two sentences--what you can do for them.

I suggest rearranging the summary and add a little more information that tells clients what you can do and how it benefits them. Here's an example:

I am a skilled Administrative Virtual Assistant and HR Enthusiast with experience helping businesses meet their aggressive deadlines by expertly preparing and managing their data and documentation. I am an expert in data research and data entry using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; using Google Workspace; document typing; video editing (Reels, Tiktok, Capcut); and calendar management.

As a dedicated administrative VA/HR Enthusiast, I can help your business bridge the gap between efficiency and empathy to create seamless operations and a thriving, motivated workforce. I am well-organized, focused, resourceful, and I have a genuine interest in helping my clients streamline their administrative tasks. I have been highly successful due to my reliability, professionalism, and dedication.

Are you stuck managing every detail of your business like data entry, file maintenance, and scheduling when you should be focusing on the bigger picture? Let's get in touch and discuss your needs and how I can help!

You can make changes to my writing, but the idea is--tell clients more about your virtual assistance services and how it benefits them.

Also, I think you need two or three more items in your portfolio. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients and clients like visuals. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

The other areas of your profile look good. Once you update your summary, I think clients will have a better understanding of the services you can provide and how you can help meet their needs.

Good luck!

Hello Community. I am new to UpWork and would appreciate input on my profile.

Kymberli,

The freelancing world is made up of writers, designers, engineers, computer programmers -- people who can sharply define their skills and the services they offer.

Multi-talented, for starters, isn't a skill or a service. As a service-oriented business the first thing you need to do is to be able to say, "I sell services X, which will help you in the following ways."

Multitalented is like saying you're smart. It just isn't a service. Freelancing is about starting a service business, not just saying "Hi, I'm available."

Anthony,

Thank you for that input. I had questioned it myself. Now I know, I should definitely change it.

Hello Syeda Ninnaz Jahan,

The first thing I noticed about your profile is the beginning of your overview/summary. I like your approach, but I wonder if it might be confusing to clients?

I ask because clients can only see the first two sentences of your summary in their searches. That means, you have a very small window of opportunity to grab their attention. Clients care about results, so you want them to see some of their goals (results) in the very small, two-sentence window.

Even though I like the approach, I think you will grab more client attention with a beginning that says what you can do for clients. Here's an example:

I'm an expert Social Media Manager and founder of a team of highly skilled and experienced social media specialists and digital marketer. We can create, lead and execute effective social media campaigns across multiple accounts including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, Threads, and more.

To ensure your social media approach is successful, we oversee your entire social media presence, manage your social media strategy, and execute the functions of an enterprise social media team. Our goal is to enhance your brand awareness, engage your target audience, drive customer engagement, and increase your revenues through various social media platforms.

Our current services are:

(Everything after this is good.)

This is similar to the beginning of your Social Media Marketing specialized profile summary. You don't have to use what I wrote verbatim, but you get the idea--use the first two sentences to give clients an idea of what they will get by hiring you (and your team).

The other areas of your profile look good!

Michael,

There are several areas of your profile you need to update:

Overview/Summary: Please remove the following from your summary:

1) The first line: "Hey!"

2) The word "Experience:"

3) The word "Qualifications:"

4) Your name and email address. NOTE: Adding your email to your summary is against Upwork's Terms of Services, so it is important that you remove it.

Skills: We are allowed 15 skills, so you should add more as long as they are relevant to your work. At a minimum, you should add Building Information Modeling, 3D Modeling, and Structural Drawing. It is important to keep your skills list updated with relevant skills categories so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.

The other areas of your profile look fine.

Hello Upwork community!
I've just made an account here, and I would appreciate any feedback on my profile!

Clark's avatar
Clark S Community Member

Hello Roni,

It looks like you are using a LinkedIn picture for your photo. I suggest using a photo without the "Open To Work" text embedded. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

Also, your profile is set to private. You must set your profile to Public so we can see it.

Joseph,

Your first two paragraphs don't establish your expertise -- your credentials. This is the first thing you need to do, always. Rhetorical statments and saying "Hi, my name is __________" Doesn't help. Your first sentence should be "I am an expert ____________ who can help you ______________.

Start with that. Take it from there.

Clark's avatar
Clark S Community Member

Hello Joseph,

In addition to what Anthony said, you should add more skill categories to your skills list--especially any skill categories that are relevant to your work. For example, you should add Email Campaign Setup and Email Campaign Optimization.

I also suggest adding skill catetories to each item in your portfolio. Similar to your profile skills list, the skill categories in your portfolio will help Upwork match you with relevant jobs, and help your profile appear when clients search for those skill areas.

Joshua,

You have to convince people you are an expert mechanical engineer, not someone who is "good at it."

You should also describe the services you are offering. What are you selling? Put another way, what problems can you solve that people should pay you for?

What benefits will people get from hiring you? That's standard, too. A profile, after all, is a marketing tool.

Lastly, you break off in the middle of a very short write up to explain you also do data research. In the first place, that information will rarely be seen by anyone since you call yourself a mechanical engineer. In the second place, when you try to advertise your services in two different areas, you are taking away from the claim that you are an expert at what you do. Experts are people focused entirely on one task. If not, they always lose out because there is too much cmpeition for you to do well trying tto be a jack of all trades.
