Assefa,

The first part of your overview/summary sounds good, but clients don't typically care about passion. Clients would rather see their goals (your services) within the first two sentences of your summary. Only the first two sentences (approximately 200-250 characters) are shown to clients when they search, so you want them to see words that will convince them to click your profile.

In addition to telling clients the tasks you can accomplish, tell them about your approach to accomplishing those tasks. Talk about your timeliness, accuracy, and ability to communicate effectively. Also talk about how you protect their sensitive or proprietary data, and how you can maintain quality standards. You are competing with hundreds of thousands of data entry specialists, so clients need several reasons to choose you.

The other areas of your profile look fine.

Hey Ihor,

I think your overview/summary introduction is good, but it would be great without the emojis.

I'm not sure if you know, but only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. Since you have very little space to get their attention, you only want important words to appear in that small space--not emojis. You can use emojis later in your summary, but I recommend removing them from the first 200-250 characters.

The other areas of your profile look good. I do not see any problems or issues that would prevent a client from hiring you.

Good luck!

Hi Rivelino,

The best way to get started is to make sure your profile is 100% complete. Right now, your profile does not have enough information to convince clients to hire you. You can change that by adding more information to your overview/summary.

Also, capitalize the first letter of each word in your title; this will help it stand out better: Movie Editing | 2D/3D Drafter | Multimedia

For a graphic designer with multimedia experience, you absolutely must have a portfolio. Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Hi everyone, I'm an aspiring developer and am getting started for freelancing in development domain, so it'd be really appreciated if anyone can help me. I'm hard working and open to criticism. Can you all please review my profile and provide any kind of feedback? I'll seriously consider your feedbacks and work on improving from them.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Narayan,

To better align your title with Upwork's skill categories, I recommend changing "Backend" to "Back-End."

Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. Clients will expect to see the portfolio of back-end, front-end, and full-stack developers, and the portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Also, to create some unity with your title, add Back-End Development to your skills list. We are only allowed 15 skill categories, but I think Back-End Development is more important than some of the others you have listed. Upwork uses these skill categories as keywords to help match you with relevant jobs, and to help your profile appear in search results for that specific skill.

Hi Clark,

Thanks a ton for these valuable insights, I've corrected the title and added Back-End Development in the skills section right away and will add some of my backend oriented projects in the portfolio asap or create some new ones as well.

Maja,

Overall, I think your profile looks good.

You might want to consider removing the first few words in your overview/summary: "Greetings! I am Maja" This seems innocent and it is, for the most part. But only the first 200-250 characters (approximately two sentences) of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. This means you have very little space to grab their attention, and you want clients to see important words about translation and copywriting--you don't want to waste space with a greeting and your name.

Also, I think you should add more to your job descriptions for the jobs in your employment history. This is especially important when the jobs are highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.

Everything else looks good.

Hello Muhammad,

Data entry is a highly competitive skill area on Upwork, so you need to add more to your profile to make it more appealing to potential clients. Here is what I think you can improve:

1) Capitalize the first letter of each word in your title; this will help it stand out better when clients are searching for data entry support: Data Entry Operator

2) Remove the greeting and your name from your overview/summary: "Hi, I am Muhammad Abdullah" This seems harmless, but the greeting and your name (which can already be seen on your profile) take up valuable space. Only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown to clients in searches, and you want clients to see important information in that small space.

3) Your summary lists good services you provide, but as mentioned above, data entry is highly competitive. You must provide more information so that clients will have several reasons to choose you. For example, in addition to telling clients what you can do, tell them about your approach to providing those services. Talk about your timeliness, your accuracy, and your ability to communicate effectively. Also talk about how you can work within their schedules, meet their deadlines, protect their sensitive data, and maintain quality standards.

4) Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Yvan,

Sorry to break this to you, but nobody cares if you're passionate and dedicated. They only care if you can get the job done.

You should start with your second sentence that says "I am an Economist graduate ... etc." (Only change that E to an e.) This sentence is what clients want to hear. They want to see that you are qualified. They don't care if you are passionate, devoted or hard working.

They want results. Passion and dedicated sounds, if you emphasize it, like you just started a week ago and you're thrilled about your career choice. You can say you are passionate and dedicated on sentence 6 or 7 or 8. But don't put it up front.

Good luck. You sound like you have great skills and knowledge ... that will help a lot, of course.

Nelum,

Your profile does not have enough information to convince clients to hire you. To make your profile more appealing to clients, provide more information in your overview/summary and your portfolio.

Here are more details about my suggestions:

1) Remove the word "freelance" from your title since freelancing is implied. The only words in your title should be skill areas. Something like Graphic Designer or Graphic Designer & Photo Editor

2) Remove the first line of your summary: "Graphic Designer & Photo Editor | 8 Years of Experience"  This is a repeat of your title, and wastes valuable space at the beginning of your summary.

3) Add more details to your summary:

  • What can you actually build or develop? (i.e., logos, flyers, banners, comic characters, bookcovers, photo edits, etc.)
  • What is your process when undertaking a project? (i.e., you provide unlimited revisions, but do you keep in contact with clients during a project? how often?)
  • Any success providing graphic design services to other clients, businesses, or previous employers?

4) I think you should add more items to your portfolio. You have three items in your portfolio; they look good, but clients will expect to see several more samples from a graphic designer with 8 years of experience. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression and clients almost always look at portfolios.

5) You should also consider adding a project catalog. The project catalog allows you to setup a pre-packaged service that clients can buy without you sending a proposal. Due to higher than usual requests for project catalogs, reviews and approvals are taking a minimum of 10 business days. Read Get Started With Project Catalog for more information.

Assefa,

For now, I'm staying with my review of your profile on December 4; you can see that review here.

Competition for data entry jobs is extremely high, so you need to provide more than a list of services in your summary. Hundreds of thousands of data entry specialists will list the same services you list. Clients will need more reasons to choose you over them.

Some other freelancers might visit your profile and provide different ideas.

Good luck!

Naaz,

You start with "I am a results-driven professional ..." but you never say what the results are. Do you help businesses increase their profits? Do you help students learn faster? Does your consulting lead to greater cohesiveness among various entities?

Beyond this, the point that's missed here is that freelancing is about offering a service to others and you're kind of ... well ... all over the place. You're a professional writer -- but I don't see any proof of that -- and a tutor and a consultant and it just comes across as undirected and scattered.

Imagine finding a new store on Main Street. And the sign out front said, "Shoes, Pizza and Cleaning Services." You'd just go away confused. There's no cohesiveness.

That said, it is encumbant on the freelancer to be an expert at what he or she does. This is because there's no employer (you are your own employer) to back you up (with liability insurance among other things). You have to be tops in your field to decide you are good enough to do this without the backing of an employer. So, it is expected that you are absolutely tops in your field ... which means nobody is tops in their field in three different things. That's just very unlikely. It takes total dedication to be tops in any field ... so your attempt to sell three different services just isn't that convincing.

Now, you could try to prove that wrong. But ... for example, there are 1.5 million writers on Upwork. Imagine that! So if you say you're a writer and there are a million other writers who write and only write and do nothing else,. You're just not going to be competetive.

Sorry, but that's how it works. The track record of freelancers who don't specialize is very bleak.

Sorry. Freelancing isn't for smart people. It's for excellent service providers. Try to figure out which of your skills you would enjoy selling the most and which might be the most lucrative. Start from there.

In fact, start with this sentence: "I am an expert _________________, with these credentials, X, Y, and Z, who can solve these problems for you __________, _________, and __________." Then you'll be on the right track.
