Lennah,

It looks like you copy/pasted résume information into your overview/summary. Some résume information is okay, but most clients are not looking for employees; most are looking for freelancers. This means, your summary should focus on the services you (a freelancer operating as a business) can provide to other businesses (clients).

Remove the word "OBJECTIVE" and use your summary to tell clients which credit control and accounts services you can provide. Your services are the client's goals, so they need to know which services you can provide and how it will benefit them. For example:

I help businesses manage their credit policies and maintain a healthy cash flow by peforming credit assessments, helping establish appropriate credit limits, invoicing, supporting treasury operations, following up with collections/overdue payments, and customer service.

You can revise this to fit your skill set and services, but you get the general idea--tell clients exactly what you can do and how it will meet their needs or solve their problems.

Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

You should also consider adding a project catalog. The project catalog allows you to setup a pre-packaged service that clients can buy without you sending a proposal. Due to higher than usual requests for project catalogs, reviews and approvals are taking a minimum of 10 business days. Read Get Started With Project Catalog for more information.

Good luck!

Hi freelancers!

Hope you can help me review my profile, I never had a client since I started upwork 2 years ago.

Thanks for the help! 😊

Hi Kimberly,

I agree with Anthony's assessment of your profile. A personal journey gets the attention of some clients, but most clients are here to get a specific need met, and that's all they care about.

I recommend starting your summary like Anthony stated:

"I am an expert QA Specialist with project management training and ________ years of work experience who can ensure your websites and web applications meet defined quality standards, work correctly, and offer an excellent user experience."

When you immediately reveal your services, it allows clients to see their goals (your services) at the beginning of your summary. This is important because only the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. You have very little space (approximately 200-250 characters) to get their attention, and you want this small space to include the client's goals (your services) and experience. The idea is that clients might be more enticed to click when they see their goals.

Consider making adjustments to your skills list. While you have a Xero and other financial/accounting certifications, neither your main profile or specialized profiles focus on financial/accounting services. Since many skill categories in your skills list are finance/accounting, you will get several job matches for finance/accounting work. This is okay if you wish to provide finance/accounting services; however, your profiles indicate web QA, virtual assistance, and digital project management services.

Upwork uses these skill categories to match you with relevant jobs, and to help your profile appear in search results when clients search for those skills.

Good luck!

Hi Kimberly,

I provided a little feedback above. Overall, I think your profile is fine, but a few adjustments will make it even better.

Hello there,

I'm new to the Upwork community and I'm trying to find my way around to secure jobs that match my skills. Is there anyone who can assist me with this?

I can't count the number of times I've tried and asked for help. My account will be canceled in an hour, only because system didn't allow me to change my profile photo to a clear new one. The error I receive says that my identity needs to be verified. I need to change my profile photo for identity verification. There is obviously a restriction. I don't understand why this is so hard to solve, why can't anyone help me?

Cody,

You've made some mistakes that a lot of others have made before you ... so you have lots of good company here.

First, you should know there are 12 million freelancers on Upwork and about a third of them seem to be web developer types. So, even if your profile is pretty good, there will be way too much competition for you to get lucky.  So, let's get started:

First, don't start with "Hi, I'm Cody Jones." That's four words wasted. Your name is already in bold at the top of your profile and it's not advised to use your last name online. So, cross all that out.

Second, you don't get hired because you are passionate about what you do. You get hired for providing excellent service. Besides, there are a few million other web designers who all say they are passionate about their work, so it doesn't make you sound interesting in the slightest and it's not the type of information people who hire web designers need when they make a hiring decision.  So, that's not helpful, either.

It is helpful to say what you know how to do. "I know how to create beautiful, functional, user-friendly websites," is useful information. Don't you think?

Here's one way to look at this: Keep things that describe your service. Ditch the things that describe your personality.

"I have extensive knowledge and skills in HTML ... and SEO best practices ..." Perfect. Keep all that.

"I'm also a great communicator, problem-solver and team player." That sounds useful, but it's pretty low on the list of things to say.  Everyone feels they are good at these things. So, it isn't very useful. (Again, describe your services, not your personality.)

Rhetorical questions are also not useful. You wrote, "If you are looking for a web develper who ..." That's not useful information. They already know the answer to that stuff. It's just fluff.

"I can deliver high quality work on time and on budget ..." that's good information. That's the kind of thing decision makers want to hear -- right?

Anyway, those are the mistakes. Here is the solution:

Start with this sentence: "I am an expert ___________________ (web develper) with  _____________ education and ____________ (work experience) who can _____________________ (create a great website), which will ________________ (name the benefits the clients will realize -- make more money, make it easy for your visitors to navigate, keep your visitors on your website longer ... whatever it is the client stands to gain).

You don't have to stick with that exactly, but stick with that message. "I am an expert web developer who uses HTM coding to create beautiful websites that get your messages across and appeal to your target audience."

There are variations on this, but establish your expertise immediately ... if not sooner.

After that, you need details that prove what you just said is true. Write about past jobs. You've done this for 10 plus years, you should have a lot to say that is detailed and specific. This is a good place to name the different computer languages you use, but tell the customer why that matters. "I use a varety of coding options, such as __________, ____________, and ___________, so your customers can interface easily and smoothly with your website ..."

Here's one way to look at this: Pretend you are about to hire a web developer to help you. What do you need to know from him or her? You don't need fluffy information about how they can create a magical universe with their coding skills ... you need actual information. What do you know? What service can you provide? What benefits will be realized? How can I trust this information -- give me some details about your past that back up your claims.

It's the same with your clients. They want the same solid information from you that you would need if you were going to hire an assistant or a partner ... you want very practical, feet-on-the-ground information. Be realistic and use details to support your claims.

Good luck.

Hey Anthony,

Amazing feedback, I'll change some stuff about my profile to be more inline with your suggestions. I have gotten fairly lucky on upwork, however I think that's only due to me making good proposals, not so much for my profile. You made great points and I appreciate it. Thanks for doing this for this community. You are a star and you deserve the recognition.

Thanks,

Cody
