Get Profile Feedback from Experienced Freelancers on Upwork

Getting started on Upwork can take a lot of work and focus. To help make this process a little easier, we’ve created this post where you can request feedback on your profile. The community is full of experienced Upwork freelancers who are passionate about helping others. These users will review your profile and provide feedback based on their experience.

If you’re interested in requesting help, make sure your profile visibility is not set to “Private” and then reply below.

We’re excited to see how Community members can continue to help each other to grow!

Note: A previous version of this post was closed as the number of responses made it difficult to read and navigate. If you had not received a response yet to a request you made, please post again in this thread.

Hi Oman,

Andrea is an Upwork Moderator. The moderators provide valuable information to freelancers and moderate the forums, but they do not provide profile reviews. Other freelancers offer to review profiles and provide feedback.

I looked through your profile and overall, I think it looks good. However, I recommend revising the first part of your overview/summary by removing the emojis and using a paragraph instead of a list. Here is an example:

I specialize in creating engaging user experience designs that will lift your business to greater heights. With 9+ years of experience in design, UX/UI, design audits, and usability, I can develop world-class user experiences that improve your brand identity, generate leads, and increase sales. I offer quick responses and communicate with you throughout the project.

𝗠𝗬 𝗦𝗞𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗦:

(...)

The reason you want a paragraph without emojis is because clients can see the first 200-250 characters of your summary when searching for freelancers. This means you have very little space (approximately two short sentences) to get their attention. You want clients to see your services, skills, and experience in this small space. You do not want to waste any space with emojis.

The rest of your summary and the other areas of your profile look great.

Hi Artyom,

I think your portfolio looks great, but your overview/summary does not have enough information to convince clients to hire you. Clients love to read about experience and skills, but they also need to know what it's like to work with you. I suggest providing more details in your summary, such as:

  • Describe your directiing and editing strengths and why it should matter to the client (the benefit).
  • Tell clients how you will communicate with them throughout a project to ensure the final product meets their needs.
  • Talk about your attention to detail and how you maintain quality standards.
  • Do you provide unlimited edits? Do you offer follow-up support after a project is completed?
  • Highlight any similar projects you have worked on and your accomplishments.
  • Talk about your ability to meet business challenges and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

Clients who look for film directors and video editors will find many of them on Upwork. The question is, do they have enough good reasons to choose you? The information you provide can help them better understand why they should hire you and how it will benefit them.

Add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. The descriptions are especially important when a job is highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.

Good luck!

Hi there,

I am new to the Upwork platform and I would greatly appreciate any feedback on my profile. I wrote a few sample pieces to use in my portfolio, but I welcome any and all feedback.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Camille,

Welcome to Upwork!

Good start to your profile. I think your overview/summary sounds great and I like the way your connect your clinical social work background and understanding of human behavior to potential writing subjects.

I have only one small suggestion: consider removing "Hi there!" from your summary. Greetings are nice, but they use up character space. When clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space (approximately two short sentences) to grab their attention. You want to ensure those 200 characters include relevant words (i.e., your services, skills, and experience)--not greetings.

Your portfolio writing samples are great too. I'm not seeing any problems or issues that would prevent a client from hiring you.

Anthony H is a professional writer. He is here often and provides great reviews of writer/editor profiles and may have some feedback on your profile.

Good luck!

Be sure to write your community posts in English; it is required for the forums.

Your profile does not have enough information to convince clients to hire you. Being good at talking is irrelevant for many if not most jobs on Upwork. If you are an entertainer, YouTube content-maker, or public speaker, your speaking skills could be appealing to some clients. However, you must explain this in your profile by providing information about your experience, your services, and how you can help clients.

The first thing you should do is change your profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

Next, make sure your the other sections of your profile are complete before applying to jobs. The best way to complete your profile is to go through the following Academy Courses:

Christopher,

I reviewed your profile and I think everything looks good. Your overview/summary does a great job of explaining how you will use your virtual assistance and customer service support to help clients, the value you bring, and why they should choose you.

Your skills, portfolio, testimonials, and employment history look great too. If possible, you may want to add Virtual Assistance to your skills list; especially since you use it or similar in your title and summary. Upwork uses these skill categories to match you with relevant jobs, and to help your profile appear in search results when clients search for those skills.

Unfortunately, spending Connects to apply for jobs can be expensive, and positive results are never guaranteed. Your profile is fine, so the lack of response and jobs is probably related to competition and visibility. If can be difficult to get attention in such a crowded market.

Good luck!

Hello Grace,

I looked through your profile and overall, it looks really good. However, there are a few things I would revise or update:

1) You probably know that clients can see the first 200-250 characters of your overview/summary when searching for freelancers. I always recommend freelancers not use emojis in the first 200+ characters because emojis take up valuable space that could be occupied by words clients can read. If you choose to keep the emojis in the first 200-250 characters, you should still capitalize the first letter of each word instead of using all caps (except for UI/UX):

(:briefcase:) 5 Years Experience | ✔ 70+ Successful Projects | (:three_o_clock:) Fast Response Time | 👍🏼 UI/UX Designer | 🤝 Client Satisfaction

In fact, many freelancers choose to place testimonials in the first 200-250 characters so that clients are hopefully inspired by the praise received from the freelancer's other clients. But that's a personal choice.

2) Also, be sure to add Front-End Development to your skills list--especially since you use similar terms in your title and summary. Upwork looks for similar (or the same) skill categories in your title and skills list, and uses the skill categories to match you with relevant jobs, and to help your profile appear in search results when clients search for those skills.

I think everything else in your profile looks good.

Good luck!

Hello Nimra,

Be sure to see the review from 25 January 2024 and the follow-up on 27 January 2024.

It looks like you made a few changes since then, but I think some changes need revisions. See the screenshot below:

celgins_0-1707060385387.png

Also, I would not start my overview/summary with education. Your bachelor's degree in Finance and Economics is great, but clients care more about your services. I highly suggest starting your summary with the paragraph that begins:

"If you're in search of a seasoned and proficient writer, your quest ends here. With a portfolio boasting over 1000 completed projects, I bring a wealth of experience in crafting compelling content backed by thorough research."

By the way, you should add your finance/economics degree to the education section of your profile.

Syed,

See William's message below.

Your profile overview/summary will be more appealing to clients if you use a conversational tone in paragraphs. There are hundreds of thousands of WordPress and Webflow developers here who have the same skills and provide the same services, so clients need several reasons to choose you. For example:

  • Tell clients how you will communicate during a development project to ensure the final product meets their needs.
  • Talk about your attention to detail and how you maintain quality standards.
  • Do you provide unlimited revisions? Do you offer follow-up support after a web project is completed?
  • Highlight any similar projects you have worked on and your accomplishments. Most clients will not ask you to share a portfolio or testimonials; however, they will appreciate it if you include a few
  • Talk about your ability to meet business challenges and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

Hi Artyom,

I see some updates since the review on 2 February 2024. The updated summary sounds better, and employment history looks good, but your summary is a bit difficult to read. I recommend adding at least one blank line between paragraphs to make it easier for clients to follow.

Also, keep in mind that when clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space (approximately two short sentences) to get their attention. You want this small space to include important words (i.e., your services, skills, and experience). With that, I recommend starting simpler and rearranging your paragraphs. Something like:

I’m a film director, post-production, live broadcast director. With a focus on YouTube and Instagram videos, I specialize in producing podcast videos, educational videos, documentaries, explainer videos, and applying color grading effects. By working with me, you will have a directorial approach to material editing with high-quality directorial solutions from a highly skilled video editor/film director with over 15 years of experience in the industry.

I'm an expert with Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Davinci Resolve, Adobe Audition, and Vmix, and will fully manage your project from start to finish. After completing your project, if necessary, I am ready to cooperate and make necessary corrections.

Throughout my career, I have worked with a diverse range of clients...

Alessandra,

Your beginning and end are not so great, but you clearly know what you are doing, including showing us you can sell yourself nicely.

The key is 1. Be friendly. 2. Establish your expertise right away, and 3. Be confident. If possible, 4. Show us why you are different from your competition.

So, you've got all of that down very well. You are different because you are a legitimate pro with legitimate experience You're not stretching you credentials or hanging them on one project you did in junior college. So, you don't have to go out of your way to show you're different. You got game and that's different.

You have high standards. That's different, too. But don't say that .. it shows; I'm just being conversational here.

So, you're opening is fine, but it's muddled. You go right after that list of credentials before you've given the reader a chance to get their bearings.

Start a little slower. "I'm an expert film producer and creator with oodles of top-notch credentials with brand-name connections all over the world."

Something like that. A kind of i ntro to your intro.

You also say, "Ask me about my discount rate."

Very unnecessary and this just adds a loop of discussion that will not really help. Online sales have to be simple. Besides that, on Upwork you negotiate different rates for different jobs. You'll just be confusing everyone for very little gain.

The idea on Upwork is high standards, not cheap rates. Clients don't want to hire people who can't cut the mustard. They are more firightened of people who might quit in the middle of a project than they are worried about low rates. Then, too, low rates attract the more marginal projecs and, believe me, on Upwork, you can see marginal right outside your window. You don't have to go looking for it.

Then, in the end, you ask two lengthy rhetorical questions. "If you're seeking a streamlined approach to completing your next animation ..."

And, "If this resonates with your needs, I'd love to ..."

Rhetoroical questions and statements don't give anyone any more useful information they will want to make a hiring decision. Of course, they want streamlined projects. Of course, they'd love to work with a pro who can solve their problems. So, both of those sentences provide nothing they don't already know.

Give them information they can use. What is your range of styles? What big successes have you had in the past? What is your logistical turnaround time? Whatever ... these are just examples ... talk about your service, not your personality. Find more useful information. The rhetorical stuff is just fluffy and time-consuming.

I don't have to hold your hand. You're clearly bright enough and write well. Good luck. I don't have a crystal ball, but you may well do very well here. (That said, keep other avenues for finding work open, too. Upwork is not a be-all option.)

Hi Chika,

I don't need feedback on my profile, but I agree that your profile is lacking and needs updates. Here is what you should update:

1) I'm sure you know your hourly rate is a non-starter for clients. You need to change this to a market rate for freelancers in your field.

2) Should your title be Virtual Assistant? If you are a visual designer or specialize in visual communication, you may want to change your title to a specific skill area. If not, and you mean "virtual assistant," you should change it to Virtual Assistant.

3) Your overview/summary needs more details to convince clients to hire you. First, remove "RARE" from the first line. Next, correct the "visual assistant" --> "virtual assitant." Then, add more information about your virtual assistance experience, your specific virtual assistance services, and why clients should choose you over the 1+ million virtual assistants already on Upwork.

For example, use your summary to:

  • Tell clients your approach for overseeing the operations and performance of their business, and why your method is beneficial to them.

  • Describe your strengths and why it should matter to the client.

  • Talk about your typing speed and accuracy, communication skills, attention to detail, and maintaining quality standards for data entry.

  • Also talk about your time management and organizational skills, and which tools and software applications you are familiar with.

  • Talk about your ability to solve administrative problems and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

Remember--you are competing with thousands upon thousands of virtual assistants, so clients need several reasons to choose you.

4) Add Virtual Assistance to your skills list. We are allowed 15 skills, but you probably don't need Book Editor in your list. Upwork uses these skill categories to match you with relevant jobs, and to help your profile appear in search results when clients search for those skills.

5) Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Good luck!

I'd love to get some feedback about my profile: https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/end2endai

Akiva,

I looked through your profile and I think it has a great approach. I'm not seeing much that could be improved. However, I would leave an action statement at the end of your overview/summary. For example:

"Do you have questions about AI or machine learning or have business products you need implemented with AI solutions? Contact me to discuss your projects detail and how I can help."

Also, you should consider adding a project catalog. The project catalog allows you to setup a pre-packaged service that clients can buy without you sending a proposal. Due to higher than usual requests for project catalogs, reviews and approvals are taking a minimum of 10 business days. Read Get Started With Project Catalog for more information.

Everything else in your profile looks good.

Good luck!

MacQueen,

I like the start of your profie overview/summary, but clients will see more valuable information if you remove your name: "I'm Macqueen Omoruyi,"  When clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space (approximately two short sentences) to get their attention. You want clients to see the other great information in your first few sentences--not your name. Clients can already see your name on your profile.

Everything else in your profile looks great.

Good luck!

Hello Nakia,

Welcome to Upwork.

Your certifications and employment history are great, but I have a few suggestions regarding your overview/summary.

First, I think you need to add more details about your services and how you can help clients. The last half of your summary is dedicated to educational accomplishments and coursework. Education is fine, but clients would rather hear about a potential working relationship with you.

Also, I suggest adding spaces between paragraphs to make your summary easier to read. Here is an example of a revised first part of your summary:

Highly successful Global Manufacturing Procurement Analyst who is energetic, analytical and creative in strategic sourcing, and direct and indirect purchasing. I can provide detailed supply guidance and coordinate activities related to the purchase of goods and services.

I'm highly proficient in creating cross-functional teams, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures, and facilitating communication between teams. I'm a reliable, effective negotiator and an expert in business strategic direction, availability needs, setting procurement goals, and implementing cost reduction strategies.

(Instead of mentioning educational accomplishments, tell clients about your procurement-related accomplishments.)

(Also, talk about:

  • Your attention to detail and how you maintain quality standards.
  • Which software/tools are you familiar with? (e.g., supply chain, inventory management, spreadsheets, etc.)
  • Mention your time management and organizational skills.
  • Highlight any similar projects you have worked on and your accomplishments.
  • Talk about your ability to meet business challenges and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.)

Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

You should also consider adding a project catalog. The project catalog allows you to setup a pre-packaged service that clients can buy without you sending a proposal. Due to higher than usual requests for project catalogs, reviews and approvals are taking a minimum of 10 business days. Read Get Started With Project Catalog for more information.

Good luck!
