Getting started on Upwork can take a lot of work and focus. To help make this process a little easier, we’ve created this post where you can request feedback on your profile. The Community is full of experienced Upwork freelancers who are passionate about helping others. These users will review your profile and provide feedback based on their experience.

Let me tell you a little more about myself maybe you would understand me more.

After studying physics at the State University of Haiti (Université d'État d'Haïti, UEH). I was a high school physics and math teacher for about 10 years in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, my country. My rate of pay was 150 Gourde per hour, which now equates to US $ 1.53 per hour. This is the main reason why I decided to change my professional career to become an Excel Expert and Data Scientist.

Effectively, I received, in 2018, the Xseries Program certificate in Microsoft Excel for the Data Analyst, a program offered by Microsoft, in collaboration with edX. Now I enroll to the Micro Maters in statistics and data science offer by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of technology) in collaboration with Edx. I am also studying Data Science with IBM and Johns Hopkins University on Coursera, and taking specializations on Python, R, SQL and to Improve my English Communication Skills.

I must tell you that it is thanks to the financial assistance on these platforms that I was able to carry out these studies online because my income did not allow me to do so.

We are currently living through one of the worst periods in our history, in Haiti. Insecurity, kidnapping, political instability, natural disasters and an exponential rate of inflation are part of our daily lives.

Now I am currently working, as a freelancer, at **Edited for Community Guidelines**, but things are worse than before.

I love math, I love manipulating data especially with excel. I see so many great opportunities that fit my skills well on Upwork but so far all my efforts have been in vain.

I have submitted around 110 proposals on Upwork since 2019, never had an interview or won a single job. The worst part is that I never got any feedback from people. Looks like my proposals were never sent or read. I always receive an automatic message from Upwork to indicate me that the case are close.

I made a lot of sacrifice to have enough connect to submit proposals I cannot continue like this.

So, I say thank you to all those who will take the time to give me their opinions, advice, suggestions and the like.

I checked your profile and thought I'd share some tips to help you become more successful on Upwork. 

You may want to highlight in your title that you are a Data Scientist since you have certifications to back up this skill. Doing so gives clients an idea of what you can do for them just by glancing at your profile. It would also be best to show in your overview how you can solve the client's problem by answering this question - "How can you help me, the client?"

It's extremely rare to get feedback from a client who has decided not to hire you. Clients often receive 50+ proposals, so they don't have time to go through all of them and write, "Here's why I'm not hiring you" to each person. And if they did, they'd be flooded with messages in response - from people whose feelings are hurt, or who will get angry, or who will continue to beg them for the job - so it would be a bad idea anyway.

What you can do is study your competitors who are winning jobs and try to figure out why they're successful - what are they charging, what are they saying in their profiles, what kind of examples do they have in their portfolios. (I notice that you have only two portfolio samples - why not add more? You should also put in some explanatory text about what the client needed, how you approached the project, and what goals you achieved; I couldn't figure this out just from looking at a bunch of charts and tables.) Then do a Google search and read some of the thousands of articles that give advice about how to market yourself as a freelancer. Then change your profile and proposals. and continue to change and improve them if you don't hear back from clients, because there's no point in continuing to do things that aren't working for you. Simply sending lots of proposals is no guarantee of getting a job, as you've already noticed. Edited to add: 100 proposals over a 2-year period isn't very much anyway - that only works out to be about 4 proposals per month. When I'm serious about looking for new clients, I check for new job posts 2-3 times per day.

Ashwini, your profile is well-written but requires some major changes. Focus on services you offer rather than past experiences. (Look at other successful freelancer profiles for more ideas.) Is it possible to get a smiling picture on a plain background? Also, if you have experience with start-ups, then have them provide testimonials. Good luck!!

Angel, great start! The overview section is too short. Add more information about the services you provide in detail. The portfolio needs to have more items and more variety (e.g. restaurants, hospitals etc.) unless you are targeting a specific industry such as software. Lastly, some testimonials from previous clients would be helpful. Good luck, I am sure you will find some exciting projects on this platform.

Hey, which is to say:. Hello fellow wordsmith.

As a freelancer, from this point forward you have to think of yourself as running a business. The business is, essentially, yourself. You run the place and you work there. You also clean up at the end of the day and pay the bills -- sorry to say. 

So start thinking like a business owner. A potential client sees your write up wander around your life story ... you went to college, you figured out vetinary managment isn't right for you and your potential customer wonders why you are tellng your life story. Tell them what you're  selling and tell them you're the best in the business. Instill some confidence in your product.

Just for example, I looked at your portfolio and there were some odd bits about your background -- and that's not what you're selling -- and a short story you wrote, and that's not what you're selling, either. You did mention some magazine work you did, some artiles you wrote -- that's what you''re selling. You should swap out your portfolio for that.

You look like you could use some more experience, so run out and get some. There's some weekly newspaper in your region that pays horribly, but they often allow anyone who is sober to work for them.  Ask them if you can write an article or two. Then you have a tear sheet -- a writing sample with your name on it. Copy that, put that in your portfolio.

With freelance writing you can build  your credibility very quickly. Oh, the editor of the Podunk Weekly took a chance on you, so another editor (or a client) will see that one editor took the risk and that's the best endorsement you can have. (It seems to hae turned out well for editor 1, so editor 2 is more likely to take a chance on you, too.) So the next week, you move up to the regional tourist magazine and then the regional farm magazine and then you keep finding better paying gigs ... etc.

Anyway, that will help you out here, too. Start small, get some nice feedback, start establishing yourself.

Have I said too much? Probably.  That's  been known to happen.
