Hourly rate...how it works

Hello. How exactly do you keep track of your hours worked and how is the client to know that you worked on the task for a specific amount of hours in order for them to pay you?

Hi Michelle,

I would be happy to help. You should be using Time Tracker in Upwork Desktop App to track your work time. Hourly contracts may be covered by Upwork Hourly Protection. For all of your hourly contracts, your clients are automatically invoiced and billed for the hours you log according to the weekly billing cycle.

However, if you log time that goes over the weekly limit that you and your client set, it won't be invoiced. Your client can see it in your Work Diary, and you can discuss the possibility of a bonus payment for that time.

All applicable time that you log in your Work Diary, whether tracked or added as manual time, is invoiced to your client according to the schedule below:

  • Week 1 — You log time using the Upwork desktop app (Time Tracker)
  • Week 2 — Your time is invoiced to your client on Monday, and they have until Friday to review your work
  • Week 3 — Earnings become available on the following Wednesday

To help you focus on the important stuff, like doing excellent work, we try to make the rest easy. So we made sure that billing your time using Time Tracker in the Upwork desktop app is as simple as can be. You can find more information about Upwork Desktop App here

Additionally, you can find more information about getting paid for hourly contracts in this help article.
