How do I complete the "Tax Information" as a Canadian citizen?

I recently signed up for Upwork and I put the information it asked me including the "Tax Identification (ID)" and "W-8BEN." I am still unclear what is a GST/HST Number and since I live in Canada, I only put my legal full name, as per instructions. What is a GST/HST number and have I completed that information correctly? I am not an Entrepreneur nor Freelancer but will transition in the future once I can quit my corporate job.

Of course you are a freelancer, otherwise you wouldn't have a profile here.

You must research all relevant information on your end. It's ok to ask the forum, but it should not be misused to post every question that comes to mind.

What an absolutely horrible, nasty response; holy cow.

I recently joined here and I would like to know a few information before I start finding jobs for security and make sure I do this legally.

Hi Maria,

GST is the Goods and Services Tax, a type of value-added tax levied by the Canadian government on various goods and services, including Upwork’s digital services. HST is the Harmonized Sales Tax, a combination of GST and similar provincial-level taxes in Canada. It is a type of value-added tax levied on various goods and services, including the digital services that we offer. It’s currently levied in Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

I'd suggest you check this help article for more information and consult yourself with a local specialist on how to report your earnings and taxes.

Thank you!
