How long did it take you to establish yourself as a reliable freelancer?

Just a short question, dudes. I've been a freelance writer for about 6 months, and while my prices have significantly improved, I still have trouble creating a network that consistently brings in work. The dead periods in between employment can be filled by content mills, but if they suddenly stopped, I would be sad. How long did it take you to establish your writing career? Just enough to cover monthly expenses and daily living expenditures; nothing extravagant. Thanks!
