That is not an Upwork question. Upwork is not a source code management tool.
Upwork places no restrictions at all on how you exchange source code - or any other information or files - with a client who has hired you.
It is certainly possible for a client to create a zip archive of a source code file or set of files, and send it to you using the Upwork Messages tool, especially if that is just a small file. But you and the client you are working with may prefer other methods of source code and file transfer, such as Dropbox, FTP, GitHub, etc.
