How to select experience level?

Hi all,

I am new to Upwork and I am unable to decide what level of experience I should select.

For Writing I'm an expert, SEO per se I'm intermediate. So how should I go about the experience level?

Also I don't understand about hourly and fixed. Most jobs I found are under 'fixed'. How does this work ?

Please help.

Thank you.

Best,

Sabah.

Hi Sabah,

Thank you for reaching out to us. Your experience level helps clients to match you with the most relevant projects. Be truthful in selecting your experience level. Setting inappropriate expectations may make it difficult to satisfy your client(s) and could adversely impact your reputation. You can find more information in this help article.

For Hourly contract, Freelancers and agencies include their rate when submitting a proposal to your project. While for Fixed-Price contract, Freelancers and agencies submit their proposed bid for the entire project and suggest potential milestones. In both cases, you can further negotiate details during the interview process. For more information on Hourly and Fixed-Price Project please check this help article. Let us know if you have further questions.

Hello Nikola,

I am grappling with a similar question. Does the Experience Level refer to how much experience one has working as a freelancer on Upwork or one's experience in one's field of expertise (whether or not one has worked as a freelancer on Upwork)?

If you have varying experience like the OP has then it is usally better to create more than one profile under your account, I.e. create a profile as an expert writer and reflect your expertise and then create a secondary profile for SEO specialist (with lower experience level), then select the profile that best suits the job posting.

Generally speaking the explanation for fixed versus hourly prices given above is correct, however, there are substantial differences.  Never, EVER, work on a fixed contract if the client hasn't funded the milestone, if they haven't funded the milestone then it is very possible that you will not get paid.

For hourly contracts, download the app and record all of the time you are working (and ensure that during that time you are actually busy on the project) to ensure that it falls under hourly protection, I.e. UpWork will pay for those HOURS that quality, the reason I'm emphasising hours here is that while it tracks in roughly 10-minute time blocks, all time blocks within that hour have to qualify for you to be entitled to the hourly payment protection.
