I can't seem to get any invitation

Greetings, Freelancers!

My name is Victor, a creative designer who is excited to nail my first job on Upwork. Although I can create all sorts of things and design with any style, I cannot seem to find a job. Like, zero. I've applied to as many open jobs as I could find and reduced my rates by 50% in order to increase my chances of getting chosen, but no luck. No profile views, no interviews, nothing.

I really want to get a job, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I really want to start my journey. Any tips?

Thank you!
Victor 😊

Good clients look for freelancers who are experts and specialise in what they do, not people who "can create all kinds of things and design with any style". Pick a couple of skills that you're best at (I'd leave out logo design, since that's the most saturated category), and create specialised profiles for each. Raise your hourly rate again, because $10/hour will only attract cheap clients, who will probably be demanding nevertheless and give you a bad review if you don't jump through hoops for them. You need to put a lot more work into your profile overview as well, and talk more specifically about what you offer and how you can benefit clients. Lastly, don't pay any attention to your profile views statistic - those numbers are only from clients who look for freelancers by doing a search; it doesn't mean that they're not viewing your profile when you send a proposal (that isn't tracked).

I have exactly the same problem. I have used up all my connects now but still no job. It now feels as if I am reaching a dead end

If you want to be a writer, you need a portfolio with samples of your work, and a much catchier and better-written profile overview.

Thank you, Christine, for your help! I will pick a niche and work on that. Since I started freelancing, people always told me to learn more than just one category, this is the "normality" in my culture. Employers always ask you to do things besides the work that you are already doing, but I guess this is not the case in freelancing.

Freelancing clients are much different from employers in that they usually just want to get one thing done as efficiently as possible, so they look for experts in that area. That's not to say that you can't offer them additional services after completing the initial gig; for example, I sometimes redesign logos for my existing clients, I just don't focus on it or bid on logo projects for new clients because there's too much competition for it to be a good return on my investment.

Hi Christine am new here too and I haven't been hired after sending a few proposals kindly advice.. thanks

Lily, I did respond to you in this thread: https://community.upwork.com/t5/New-to-Upwork/I-am-New/m-p/1052015#M164646. But I'm afraid that there's just not much demand for new data entry freelancers.

Also, when you are new, invitations most likely will come from scammers.  Real, solid invitations only come after you have some history on the platform.  Follow Christine's excellent advice and keep sending proposals but forget about invitations for a while.

Hi, Mary! Sure, I will take Christine's advice and hope everything will go well.

Hi Mary how will we get history of work and yet we haven't been hired even once ...am new too and I haven't been hired too ... continue helping us out the newbies...thanks

Thanks Victor for this question and thanks for the answers so far. I am a designer too and I will pick it up from here too.

I wish to return here with my testimony.

But I have one question having worked off line for a while rendering my design service is it right to choose expert as my qualification on my profile?

You need to do a lot more work on your portfolio. Two items isn't enough, and they don't demonstrate any of the skills that you say you have. There are also several typos in your overview (it's "mock up" not "muck up").

The entry, intermediate and expert levels are more about prices than anything else, in my opinion. You're charging an entry level rate, so you're more likely to get clients who are looking for entry level freelancers. You should probably keep it that way until you get a few projects here.

Hey Christine,

I am facing the same issue. Neither I am getting any proposal responses nor invites. I have updated my profile, updated features, made specialized profiles but nothing is working. Could you please help me understand why?
