I don't get it noone is contacting me but scammers!

Hello,

I have been on UPwork for a couple of months and before it became Upwork I used to be on Odesk and have gotten many jobs from that site. Now that it is Upwork, it is hard to get work. I have created and freshened up my profile and submitted proposals the way I should. I did about 10 proposals in 1 day and got 1 response from a scammer who wanted to talk to me outside of Upwork. I was so desperate but caught them in a lie and reported them. I cannot find work on here unless it has to be a con artist. Please someone can give me tips?

What is you are a first time person, how can you gain experience? I can link a profile from another freelance site to my profile for potential clients to see it? What should I do if I have not any experience on Upwork? I do have samples but they are on my personal website which I also linked on my profile. Is that good enough? Should I include: "please check out my profile to learn more about what I do" on my proposals (coverletters)?

If you have an existing oDesk profile you should be using that, and CLOSE this one. With your previous oDesk history you'd lose the scammers (most of them anyway as they mainly target newbies) and would benefit from your oDesk history!!!!

Also, in the preview window the client only sees the first line of your overview.

What makes you stand out? THAT needs to be in the first line. Think "Experienced US based native English speaking Customer Service Professional with X, Y, Y (core skills) .................." - something meaningful (to the client). Clients don't actively search for moms and wives (they may well have their own ๐Ÿ˜‰ and they can see your name, no need to repeat it in that all important first line.

Your first line, at the moment is not likely to get a client to want to find out more when they have dozens of applicants. Your application may well not even be read based on this.

Rewrite your overview (on your OLD profile, not this one) concentrating on your specific skills, on what YOU can bring to the client's table, not your personal circumstances and what you like.

You also have to remove the link to your website if that allows direct contact.

Hello and thanks for the advice.

I will do so. I figured when they see my link on there, they see my work. But I will make changes. One thing is how can I get access to my Odesk profile and link it to the profile on here?

The thing is, I don't know where to get my odesk profile?

Hello LaToya,

You can use your oDesk account to log in here on Upwork.

Upwork is quasi oDesk with new clothes ๐Ÿ˜‰

Just log in with your old oDesk credentials - then check everything is working fine, then close the new account so it doesn't show up as dupe in due course ๐Ÿ™‚

Where can I find the site to odesk? It gets to this site. There's no more odesk.

odesk is now Upwork. The name has changed among other things. Just log on to this site with  your Odesk username and password.

for some reason I am unable to get my old credentials ๐Ÿ˜ž

 1) LaToya, do you remember which email address you used originally (on oDesk?)

2) Do you recall your (old) password? (they may be saved in your browser settings anyway!)

If both, just use your email addy and password from your old oDesk account to log into Upwork

If you remember only the email address, use the email address to log in, then use the "forgot password" function to reset the password (provided you still have access to the old email account)

If that does not work, contact Upwork Support with as much detail as you can remember. They should be able to locate your old account.

Hello Petra,

I will go ahead and delete this account, login with my old account and add this email address to new account as the old one is no longer active anymore. Could I be able to do that? I will see you on my old profile: **Edited for Community Guidelines**

LaToya:

If you have two accounts right now you simply need to contact Upwork Customer Support and explain to them what happened, and ask them to help you remove the superfluous account.

The Upwork user controls you have access to simply are not sufficient to resolve this by yourself.

If you go to Customer Support you will avoid problems later on that could be caused by Upwork's automated algorithms looking for duplicate accounts and taking punitive measures.

OK, well I did contact them on the other account which they know about it and I will just delete this account. No problem. Thanks though.

I am going through that right now. I just was contacted by somebody but I am scared it is a scam. Can you tell me what stood out to you to you knowing it was one or not please.

Well, what happened was they will invite you to a project 1st then will tell you to read the full job descritpion, then they will provide you with their eiterh skype or gmail address for you to add them so they can further discuss the project.

One thing you musch check to see if they are scamming:

1. Are they verified?

2. Do they try to contact you outside of UPwork? You should always contact them within Upwork!

Some times these con artists try to pretend they are a legitimate company like Hertz or some big corporate company and just to make you think they are legit when they are the ones that are the scam.

If you see something like this or get an invite to someone like this, report them to Upwork immediately.

Hope this helps and if I left out something team let me know.

Many blessings ๐Ÿ™‚
