If you’re interested in requesting help, make sure your profile visibility is not set to “Private” and then reply below.

We’re excited to see how Community members can continue to help each other to grow!

Note: A previous version of this post was as the number of responses made it difficult to read and navigate. If you had not received a response yet to a request you made, please post again in this thread.

Anuraag,

I think you overplay your hand quite a bit. Zealous? That's really a zealous word. I think you could throttle back a bit, be more relaxed. Your profile is like an engine revved up ...

People want an expert and someone who is confident and friendly. You don't have to say I'm an expert 15 times. You're

kind of hitting people on the head quite a bit.

People hire people they like. In that sense, I think toning it down and going for something shorter would help some.

That said, two things: One: a rate of $15 per hour for top notch bookkeeping is really, really low. Yes, people start with low rates in order to build up ... but I think it's high time to move higher. What's holding you back? The longer you wait, the longer you languish in those pathetic earnings.

Secondly ... you know, I can't knock success. You are doing pretty well. Maybe you should ignore everything I said. You have your own style, you are marching along. But you asked for help for a reason ... so that's what I have for you. I been doing this a lot and I know the psychology of marketing pretty well, but it's still just one man's opinion.

Hey! Can anyone reply how my profile looks ?

Hello Mandip,

To start with you are a bit to cheep with your rate, others in your field have rates from $15-$150 obviously depending on skills and experience.

I would suggest as a starting point set your rate to around $15 per hour.

Change your intro title from “Contents and Gaming Video Editor” to “Video Editor, Specialising in Gaming.”

Be more positive in your profile introduction, be confident with your own abilities and skills, 2 years experience isn’t long but it’s long enough to have developed some pretty solid foundations in your skill set.

I think you need to have a look at some other profiles of video editors to get a better feel of how to present yourself and your work. (if you need pointing in the right direction let me know.)

Your portfolio (don’t take this the wrong way), your item doesn’t impress me one little bit. The clips are far too short, jumpy around and seem disjointed. This may be the way the kids like gaming vid’s but as a gamer myself I much prefer a smooth visual experience.

As a potential client I would move on after viewing your first clip. Try to produce some good videos of about 1 min to 1.5 min’s of some of the areas you say you edit the most in.

Most clients that look for video editors want someone that can edit footage seamlessly for adverts, online product video’s and so on. Even if you need to go out and record the footage yourself and edit, this will be far more beneficial to you than the clips you have on display now.

You are using some of the very best software for this. Spend a little time in putting some great footage together that really shows off your skills.

Here are some ideas: Make a product video of a household item: Make a video of you working showing each stage of the process: Make a video of an interesting land mark near you: the possibilities are endless, the main thing is show what you can do.

If you don’t have a camera or phone you can film on there are plenty of video clips online that you could use to make short videos with.

Hope this is helpful.

Hallo!

I am a greek student and I set up this profile recently. I would love any reviews or feedback/ help so i can improve my profile and actually get to work. Thanks a lot.

Hello Kostas,

To start with I am sure that you would be good to go if you up your hourly rate to around $20-$25 per hour here.

Going off your employment history and the rest of your profile I would change your title to “Copywriter / Translator”

Start your introduction with something like, “I am a copywriter with ?? years experience in a wide range of industry sectors.”

“My expertise and experience has given me the tools and skills to provide easy to read copy that is unique, whatever sector you are in. Due to my language skills I have found that my talents for English-Greek translation has been sort after.”

“The industrial areas I have worked in are:

IT,

medical,

lifestyle,

entertainment,

marketing,

food to travels

and much more.”

Message me if my skills fit with your project.”

(The above is only a suggestion on how to write your profile introduction, you may find that you can add to this.)

It would be a good idea to have at least 1 portfolio item, even if it is an rewrite of some existing copy, but show a before and after image.

I would also try and expand the skills list at the bottom of your profile, you can have 15 items here and I’m sure there are a lot more than 4 you could put up.

Proposals.

Vet the client don’t just send out loads of proposals. Has the client got a record of other past jobs? Is the payment method verified? What is their star rating? Do they give out feedback to freelancers? What is their hire rate? What is the project brief like? How long has the job been live? How many applications have they received?

Keep your proposal short, to the point, but let the client know what they will get from you, your hourly rate (if it isn’t a fixed price) and the estimated time it will take you to do. Finish with a call to action

Good luck.

Hello Tommaso,

To start with your rate is a little low, yes you’re a student still learning your craft, but looking at your work, I think you should set your rate somewhere around $20-$25 per hour.

Going off your profile again I would change your intro title to “Graphic Design / Logo Design”.

When a client reads your profile he doesn’t want to know where you live, he is looking for someone that has the skills and knowledge to complete his project. He wants to know what your experience is, the work you do best, what he will be getting from you and what is your attitude to projects.

With this in mind, start your intro with something like, “I’m a graphic designer with over 2 years experience, dealing with many areas of graphic design but specialising in Logo design”.

Then, “I currently take local projects from small to medium size companies along with start-up’s while finishing off my studies.”

Then, “My clients have remarked on my creativity many times with my works, I put this down to my total joy of designing and seeing my work fulfil the clients expectations of the projects.”

Then put your lists in and finish on a call to action (you will come across this phrase many times in your career), something on the lines of, “Message me if I fit your requirements for your project.”

The format of your intro is good, using plenty of space to ensure ease of reading.

You have a good portfolio, using good resolution images but try to expand on the discriptions a little more (we graphic designers are the worst for this, thinking it’s ok just to say “Logo for ….”,) go in to a little detail on what you did, research you did, how many ideas before the final, did you give the client a selection to choose from?

The next bit to master is the proposal.

Vet the client don’t just chase the money, you are in the best position to gain extensive experience before you officially leave study and enter the market place. Has the client got a record of other past jobs? Is the payment method verified? What is their star rating? Do they give out feedback to freelancers? What is their hire rate? What is the project brief like? How long has the job been live (don’t go for anything over 15Hrs old)? How many applications have they received?

Just my advice here but if any of the above is not up to standard don’t go for the job, unless it is something that really interests you and don’t mind loosing connects on.

Keep your proposal short, to the point, but let the client know what they will get from you, your hourly rate (if it isn’t a fixed price) and the estimated time it will take you to do. Finish with a call to action (there it is again). It will be hard work getting your first few jobs but once you start building your reputation it will get easier.

If you get stuck at all just give me a shout and I will see how I can help you.

All the best and well done, for getting a head start in the jobs market.

Hi,
Would you please take a look at my profile and suggest some improvements? Would be so helpful for me.

Thanks.

No hire, no invites, no responses

Hello senior/experienced Freelances,

I am stunned with my reports. From November my hiring and invites are decreasing. Even when i won interview via proposal i loose the job. Is it about bad time

I think it was because of holiday season but at the same time other freelancer getting more jobs and invites

Because of being impatient i made changes to profile title description and all

Stil didn't getting good/enough work. Starting on upwork was awesome but this phase is difficult to handle

Can anyone help if it is my profile or anything else that i am not getting invites . . . ?  ing invites

Hi Muhammad,

I'm sorry to hear you haven't been able to find jobs lately. Whenever you have the chance, I'd suggest that you have a look at the following Upwork Academy courses to help you boost your chances of success:

Additionally, I've merged your post into a thread where other experienced freelancers can share their feedback with you.

Hello, I have been on Upwork for a while now and am not getting any views and jobs at all, I got only two projects through sending many proposals, but it's been a month I have not gotten anything since then, I would greatly appreciate it if you could take a look at my profile and give some feedback.

https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~011a36bd0cb15989f5

Thanks

Hello Muhammad,

I can’t see anything wrong with your profile. The layout is OK, you have a reasonable rate.

The lack of comeback from proposals is a big issue at the moment, and from what I see in other threads has been for a good few months now.

Why is this? It could be a number of factors, the world economy isn’t to good at the moment so clients are trying to make their cash go further and are much more picky and reserved with hiring.

There are a lot more freelancers now, than there were before the pandemic so a lot more for the client to choose from.

Your proposals may not be hitting the spot with clients.

Before thinking about sending a proposal for a job vet the client and job:

  1. Has the client got past jobs? (yes/no)
  2. Has the client got a good feedback score? (yes/no)
  3. Is the payment method verified? (yes/no)
  4. Is the brief clear and coherent? (yes/no)
  5. Is the budget realistic? (yes/no)
  6. Is the time line realistic? (yes/no)

If the majority is a sound “yes” then go for the job.

Keep your proposal short but informative to the client. Mention the project in the first sentence, something like “I have XX years experience in specialising with your need for a web flow developer.”

Then you need to go into a little detail of how you can help by doing what they need doing.

Give an estimate on time frames but try not to be to specific, say this is as long as there are no problems found.

Tell them your rate if it’s not a fixed priced job and say what they get for this.

End with a call to action prompting them to contact you if you fit the job.

(I read an article a couple of months back written by a top freelancer here on upwork that gave the same advice and stated that, his proposals never go beyond 195 words per proposal and the average was 145 words per proposal.)

I’m afraid there’s no easy or quick way to get around this problem. You just need to persevere, pick your jobs and clients carefully and stick with it.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Thank you, Jason. I do check all of these 6 questions which you mentioned above before applying for a job. Although I will follow the guidelines you mentioned above and work on my proposal.

Hi, I have made some changes to my profile. kindly suggest how I can make it better.

Hello Fadila,

Your profile is ok. You have the odd minor grammatical mistake but nothing really bad, you can sort these out by running your text through “Grammary”.

You have a good selection of portfolio items showing off your skills and catalogue items.

I see you have only been on upwork for a short time so far and yet to land any work, are you sending proposals out yet?

Thank you for the review. I will definitely act upon your advice. So far I have sent only 8 proposals and got replies from 2 buyers but due to some reasons, I was not able to work with them. I learned proposal writing from one of the courses of Upwork.

Hi, may I request to take a look at my profile and see if there is something that has to be improved? I'm new to Upwork though I've been freelancing for 9 years and as a newbie I want to improve it so that it can look more attractive to prospective clients. Also if you can help me with my English as well I would appreciate it as that is only my 3rd language and I don't want to make a bad impression to prospective clients that they would have a hard time communicating with me. I sent 25 proposals and so far 2 responded to it (and one of them is a scam which fortunately I didn't respond and Upwork removed their job posting) but still no job so far.

Thank you

Hello Jaclyn,

First with your experience you should be charging at least $25 per hour.

Change your profile title to – “Expert Graphic Designer”

Your introduction needs a bit of formatting at the moment it is one BIG block of text.

I have re-written your intro here for you, taking out some un-needed stuff and re-wording others to make it read better.

“I have more than 15 years experience in graphic design and 9 years as a freelancer.

Prior to becoming a full time freelancer, I worked as an in-house Graphic Designer for 3 employers.

I conceptualize and create designs for:

  • Dieline Design
  • Company Logos,
  • Advertising/Marketing collaterals
  • Brochures and Flyers,
  • Advertising streamers,
  • Billboards,
  • Invitations,
  • Social Media,
  • Packaging for FMCG
  • Restaurant placemats, coasters, delivery uniforms and rendering designs for store look and off-site event needs such as carts, signage’s,
  • Construction Board-ups,
  • Exhibit Booths.

I have also created several animation videos for LED advertisements.

Message me if my skills and experience match your needs.”

Your portfolio is ok but you need to expand on the descriptions a little more, go in to detail on what you needed to do for the projects. Your design work is good.

Your first clip on project “My Animation Videos” is a little too fast, there isn’t enough time to read any text you have put in it, slow it down or extend it, (remember it takes about 2 seconds to see text, 2 seconds to focus and 3-5 seconds to read it).

I will send you a message in regards to your English.

Hope this is helpful.

Hi Jason,

Thank you for the feedback. Very much appreciated. I'll copy the revised intro that you made and also take note of adding more details on the descriptions of my portfolio. As for the animation, I'll also take a look at it.
