Invoice a client for a trial (no open project)?

Spoiler
Hello... I'm relatively new here. I did a small sample of work for a client for a potential project. He liked my work but ultimately went with another candidate.

The client is pushing me to invoice him for the sample. How can I do this cleanly on Upwork? He won't be hiring me for the project, and it's a very small amount of money. Does he still have to open and close a project?

Hi Zoe,

At the moment we don't have an option to invoice your client for a trial without forming an official contract. Your client can open a fixed price contract for the agreed budget and once the payment is approved you and your client can close the contract and provide feedback for eachother. Thank you.
