Is it safe to communicate outside of Upwork?

Are hiring clients required to go through specific certifications before they can post for freelance work? In order to prove they are who they claim to be? How do I know it's not someone trying to pose a threat to me? I did a virtual hangouts interview, and they want to proceed with a contract. So they asked for my name and address. Now I am nervous that I could have potentially sent this info to someone fishing.

re: "Is it safe to communicate outside of Upwork?"

For the most part, yes.

re: "Are hiring clients required to go through specific certifications before they can post for freelance work?"

No.

No.

Most job postings on Upwork are posted by clients who simply want to hire freelancers to help them.

Most, but not all.

re: "I did a virtual hangouts interview, and they want to proceed with a contract."

All Google Hangouts invites are from scammers.

Do not participate in those. Feel free to report them to Upwork using the "Flag as inappropriate" button/links on the job posting pages. But the way to save the most time is to simply ignore these completely immediately use the "Decline" button on their job invitations as soon as they mention "Google Hangouts."

Scammers target:

- newbie freelancers

- U.S.-based freelancers

- entry-level freelancers

You fall into all three categories.

Pay no attention to invites that you receive out of the blue. Focus only on jobs that you carefully choose and apply to.

When you have more experience, you can look forward to receiving legitimate invites.

I gave them my address ๐Ÿ˜ž ๐Ÿ˜ž How do I proceed from here?

re: "I gave them my address. How do I proceed from here?"

So what?

Don't worry about this.

They don't even live in the same country as you.

The reason they wanted your address was so they could send you a fake check, and then get you to withdraw cash from your bank account and send them the cash in a way that can't be recovered.

You're not going to cash a fake check, and you're not going to send them your money, so there is nothing to worry about.

Just block them if you have not already done so and forget about this.

Being a woman, I fear sex trafficking as well ๐Ÿ˜ž how do I report the
account?

re: "how do I report the account?"

Go to the job posting. In the top right-hand corner click on the link "Flag as inappropriate"

Moving forward in the future is it normal for a client to ask for my
address for Contracting purposes

re: "Moving forward in the future is it normal for a client to ask for my address for Contracting purposes"

Pretty much never.

I have completed 231 jobs. I have never provided a client with my physical address.

Theoretically there may be some clients who send an NDA which asks for a physical address.

Honestly? You could probably just provide your physical address and it wouldn't be a big deal.

If you want to be super-safe, then provide a P.O. Box.

If you were filling out an NDA and it asked for an address and you REALLY didn't want to provide your physical address, and you don't actually have a P.O. box, then you could provide the address of the local post office, with "c/o Jane Smith" as the second line, and PLAN TO GET a P.O. box. If they're not actually sending you anything, and you never get around to getting a P.O. box... what are they going to do? Nothing.

Ok great, thank you so much for your help!
