Job seekers and freelancers, beware!

So as a day 2, fresh face to Upwork, my experience hasn't been the best so far. Let me be clear, I do not hold Upwork responsible but I do encourage them to be better than yesterday. Anyway, I filled out an application for a remote BOOK KEEPING position at BAPTIST HEALTH CARE COMPANY in Pensacola FL. Everything was going well (so I thought), nailed the interview then was offered the job. I was over the top excited for this new venture. However, this afternoon I would learn horrible news. So obviously with this job being remote, computers or laptops, Ipads, MacBooks, things like this are needed. The HR person who identified themselves as**Edited for community guidelines**, informed me that because this was a remote position, I'd need the equipment mentioned above. She also assured me that, it would be provided by the company (Baptist Health). The instructions included, their payroll dept emailing me a check "voucher" to purchase those items to get started. Being as though this was yesterday evening, I would have to wait until today at 8a to get a jump on things. So last night they emailed the voucher and I was instructed to do a mobile deposit so that by 11a, it should be cleared. I was also instructed to reach out to**Edited for community guidelines**by 8a for further instructions to to get prepped for the new job. The morning moves fast so before you know it, it's almost 12 noon.**Edited for community guidelines**seemed to be hounding me about the deposit so I assured her I was calling my bank right away. Upon calling the bank, I was transferred to the "Customer Security Dept" where I learned the whole thing was a big fat scam! ๐Ÿ˜” When I called**Edited for community guidelines**, a foreign gentleman answer... That's was clearly no**Edited for community guidelines**. Sad part is**Edited for community guidelines**is an actual person who works for the actual Baptist Health Care in Pensacola. I know this because I called Baptist myself and notified them of what's going on. So this guy must've created this page, researched and made his position and job listing look realistic. I'm kind of worried that my social security number might be exposed but I sure am glad I didn't spend any money. So folks, please be careful. Research the company, ask questions and make sure you're able to physically speak with someone and not just chat. I hope this helps someone facing a similar situation. Good luck ๐Ÿคž

Nikia,

It against Upwork's Terms of Service to go off site IE with an email address with a prospect. That is how freelancers get scammed.

I couldn't believe it. In all my years, I never thought something like this could happen to me ๐Ÿ˜”

As on any place, there are bad characters.

I will do it. Thank you.

No, NOT obviously. That's not how freelancing works. You're supposed to already have whatever you need in order to do your job; nobody is going to buy you thousands of dollars worth of equipment, and at any rate it would be a terms of service violation for you to accept any offers of direct payment. All payments must be processed via Upwork, and if you're caught dealing directly with a client, your account will be permanently banned.

You seriously think that a scammer told your their real name, OR, is it more likely that the scammer pretended to be a real person who works for this company? If you're going to believe everything that total strangers tell you on the Internet, then you're going to fall prey to a lot more scams here.

Click on the Upwork Academy link at the top of this page and go through all of the materials before you send any more proposals. It's extremely difficult to get legitimate work here, especially if you don't know what you're doing.

I got the same thing. Offered the same job same place and same person. I'm supposed to text her at 8am. I knew it was to good to be true. Even though I know this is a scam bummer now I'm all bummed out.
