You need to post a portfolio.

Your portfolio pieces DO NOT NEED to be work that you did for Upwork clients.

They DO NOT need to be things that you did for pay.

You can create work purely for the purpose of posting it in your portfolio.

You need to show what you can do for clients.

You may post anything that you have the right to post. That includes things you create yourself (for "yourself" as a "client"), and it includes work you did for others that you ask permission to post, and they say yes.
