Linking Fee or Scam?

Hello. I would like to ask something. After you submit your project, do they really require a linking fee for you to pay before you receive you salary? The financial secretary of the company wanted me to pay 100$ but I didn't have that. So he told me I can pay 50$ so I can receive my salary payment already. Does this seem off or legit?

Lara, that's 100% illegitimate. You should flag the job as inappropriate so Upwork can remove it. I recommend you read this excellent blog post so you can avoid other common Upwork scams. Stay safe!

Scam! Report it and block them.

Hello, I have done something for a publishing house. And they emailed me that for Linking Fee, an ID card and an amount of 550 dollars are needed, should I make this payment or not? Thank you for your time.

You did the work, you are the one to get paid. Is that your first job on Upwork? It looks more like another scam.

Please report them.

I also did something , they needed $50... don't they are scammers

Hi Lara,

I'm really sorry you've had a bad experience. What you're describing is not how freelancing works. The client is supposed to pay you. When you work on Upwork, the Upwork fees are taken from what the client pays you.

Before you accept another job on Upwork, you should take some time to understand how the platform works for freelancers. Unfortunately, scammers really target people who are new to Upwork and take advantage of the fact that they do't know how it works. I suspect you started work without a contract. Check out the post John mentioned for a list of red flags. I think everyone who starts out on the platform should read that. If you know the basic patterns of the scams mentioned, you'll be able to avoid them.

This is another great tool one of the other freelancers put together a few years ago.
It might take a little while to load.

You should also familiarize yourself with the two types of contracts on Upwork, fixed-price and hourly, and the protectios they provide to freelancers. However, if you don't have a contract, you're not protected.

https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/211063748-Fixed-Price-Protection

https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/211068288-Hourly-Protection

Finally, everyone who starts here should take some time to familiarize themselves with the legal terms. These are what you agree to every time you accept a contract on Upwork. This information tells you what you can and can't do on the platform and what's prohibited for clients.

https://www.upwork.com/legal

The Terms of Use might be the easiest place to start.

All this is great. But are feelenacers given this same info during the sign up process by Upwork, or do they have to take it upon themselves to find it afterwards?

Hello. My name is Elias, from Madagascar.
I have this experience actually. The client asked me one project. It was a retyping 20 pages pdf. I did the work, then they said, that my job was viewed and approved.
They asked me about payment method, so I told them bank transfer. after that, they said to me that I need to pay 50$ for a linking fee. because my bank is not connect with their payment server.
What should I do. I really need the salary, my father is dying.
They said that, once I do the deposit of the 50$, then 10 mn after thet my salary will be transfer on my account.
Actually, I am very sad because, I dit their work with all my efforts and heart. I really need my salary, it must be 2000$ as they said before I do the job.

Thank you for those who answer.

Elias

Do not pay the 50$.

You will not receive your salary.

You are dealing with scammers.

Communicating outside Upwork, working without being hired and accepting payments outside Upwork are not allowed to avoid these situations.

Please make sure to learn how things work before wasting more time or money.

A real client will never ask you to pay to get your money.

Here is a link. Read the main article at the top and follow all the links.

Re: To all freelancers looking for help - Page 17 - Upwork Community

Hi! Was the company name **Edited for Community Guidelines** ?

Have they paid you now??

Hi did you remember what is the name of the company? And did u even get you salary?

Hi! I do not remember thr name of the company but no, I did not get my
salary. They would keep asking for the fee but I turned them down, I asked
a few friends who work remotely if this ever happened to them and they told
me that it was more likely a scam.

Hi,

Did you pay the $50 they require?

I'm also in the same situation right now. I did pay the $50, and now they require me again to pay $150 for a technical issue.

What am I supposed to do? I've sent the $50 already ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Sorry to inform you that you have been scammed, they are just trying to get more money out of you. There is nothing Upwork can do about it as you have broken one of the first rules, you have accepted to contact a so called client outside of Upwork.

Lara i undertand. I did my work and they asking about linking fee of $200 USD... I don't this money and they said that don't pay me. I'm devastated. One month of Work...

IMO, the advance fee scams are the worst. You might not even lose money, but you lose a lot of time and hence they are psychologically more damaging. I might be wrong, maybe losing a lot of money in a very short time like in the crypto scams are worse, I don't know since I've never been scammed.

Eduarda, that's the way freelancers learn about following the rules set by Upwork. Never start any job without a contract, never agree to be paid outside of Upwork.

Sorry about your situation. Be sure that the scam is to make for you pay $200 and not getting any payment back. Please don't pay and report these people to Upwork.

I am also new here and they also did the same thing to me, it was my first project so I didn't understand they are fake, after finishing the project they wanted me pay linking fee ($200),then I understand they are scammer.I didn't pay money but a lot of my time wasted

Same is happening to me, actually they target the beginners

It would not make sense to target experienced freelancers who know how everything works. Their favorite target is a new freelancer who thinks he is hired just because someone told them (probably over telegram) that they are hired.

It is truly the most basic information to have to master - knowing how hiring works. Even if people don't know that telegram is not allowed, at least they should know if they are hired or not.

You're an easy target because you clearly haven't read anything about how to use Upwork or how to freelance in general. You have a one-sentence profile overview, no writing samples, no profile photo, and you're wasting your time applying for data entry jobs if you expect an hourly rate of $25. You will continue to attract scammers and not get any real clients until you fix these issues. There's a huge amount of help and information available, even free coaching; I suggest that you take advantage of it before you bid on any more projects.

It's true that scammers often target newcomers. In this set of postings, they suggest that people with no level of experience can submit proposals.

Thanks a lot, your advice is very helpful

Hi folks !

After being a scam target, I want to report it to Upwork as soon as possible, but haven't found any links on the Upwork website to do so.

Could anyone please give me a hand?

Thanks a lot in advance,

Marcelo

In the same publication of the job there is a "Flag as inappropriate".
If the job doesn't show up, someone already flagged it and Upwork removed it.

I was a target too, but I could not find the job post and report it, they removed it after they hired me.

My bad

Same I got the job they removed it after hiring me they communicated with me on telegram and now  they are asking for a linking fee

It happened to me. I handled the work and they asked me for a fee. I won't pay for it. But lesson learned.

Lesson learned - that's the most important!

I had the same right now. The dudes introduced themselves as motion recruitment managers. They gave me a designed pdf and documents similar to the real document for work. And gave the task for 3 days of hard working. When I made the task they asked for additional documents and linkin fee, to connect my account to their bank. I didn't pay any money), but someone I'm sure did this. They did literally like a real company.

I have the same situation. Initially, I paid $50 for the insurance premium. After successful confirmation of the project, they demand $ 100 from me.I understand that no one will pay me my money. The company is called **Edited for Community Guidelines**. Be careful!!!

It ask me to fee $80 how

I'm afraid it's a scam. That's not how Upwork works. Never accept to contact new clients outside of Upwork if you don't want to get it trouble.
