Listing ALL of your Professional Experience in Your Profile

Do I list my professional work experience in my profile is it's not relative to my side business? I've been a HR professional for 18 years and a media and podcast producer for 5 years. Do I list them both in my profile? Do they both matter to build the right credibility?

Nicholas, it shouldn't hurt to put all of it in the Employment history section, as long as your overview is focused on the services you're offering as a freelancer.

Thanks for the quick response, John.

I realized that listing all of it can actually go against you. You can be really good in two different areas but clients here look for specialists. Though I agree with John that you can add your experience in the employment section. Just don't mix things up in your overview or title, because that is the place where people can get confused about what you really do. I am a multimedia designer and I suffer from this issue all the time.

You absolutely do not need to list all your professional work. Your profile is a PROMOTIONAL TOOL which is there to help clients know what you can do for them, and it's purpose for you is to help you get hired. You can't lie. But you don't have to list everything. Think about movie posters. They may say... "From the Director of the Last Year's Academy Award Winning Film..." But the poster doesn't mention the really lame movies the director made before that.

That depends on what you plan to do in your freelance life and what kind of clients you want to target. If your media and podcast productions were related to HR, that might give you more credibility with people who want to hire you to create business-related media or podcast content. Or, the same approach might confuse people who just want to hire a podcast producer and are just looking to see what kind of experience you have in that domain.

You can also experiment, adding and modifying things as you go to see what works best and what kind of clients you want to focus on. That way, you can adapt and tailor it once you've got a sense of what's relevant to the clients you find you're working with most often.
