My best advice is to forget about it and move on. The invitations/ interviews/ proposals doesn't always seem to be accurate.

This is not uncommon in the worldof Freelancing. As a professional graphic designer I have had this happen a few more times than I would like, I move on to the next possible project. I wish you luck in your freelancing career.

That means the client has chosen not to interview you and archived (but not declined) your proposal. The "X applicants" does not include applicants who were archived or declined.
The client clearly archived and / or declined all applicants apart from those he wants to interview, which is good practice.
