Moving conversations outside of upwork

Client reached out and immediately tried to move the conversation from Upwork to a Telegram application. I declined to move the conversation outside of Upwork (for one because I am new to the Upwork community and two because I knew that the likelihood is that they are trying to scam someone). The individual then blocked me on Upwork. I tried to google the name on LinkedIn and Google Search and came back with the result that the name provided is that of a professional figure skater. Scammer? I feel that conversations should remain on Upwork for safety reasons. Does anyone else move conversations outside of Upwork to a different application or platform?

This is a scam and you were right not to communicate with them.

There is no point googling names - a scammer is obviously not going to tell you their real name nor the name of a business that they actually work for. Keeping conversations on Upwork is a requirement, not an option.
