Need Clarification

Welcome to Upwork and congratulations on getting paid for your first project! When your client releases a milestone or final payment on a fixed-price job, it immediately shows as pending on your financial account. Pending payments become available for you to withdraw after the standard five-day security period. You may read more about Getting Paid for Fixed-Price Contracts here.

I checked your account and saw that the funds were released to you today. The amount should be available for withdrawal on the 22nd. If you encounter any problems, please let us know and we'll be more than happy to help.

I would never agree to a contract where I have to buy something for a client. It's not the purpose of upwork to do things like that, and they can go wrong at any time, and you will have absolutely no protection to get your money.

What did you buy for her? It sounds like you suspect that something is wrong. Even if your client paid, she could still do a chargeback at a later time.

If you have to pay something from your own money, stop. You might lose what you bought and the client's payment.

Knowing what you bought would help to answer you better.

Can you explain a bit more? Exactly what do you need to buy, and what is the job? And yes, she can do a chargeback even months later. Is she new, or does she have other jobs completed with good reviews from other freelancers?

If a client needs you to have something in particular in order to complete a job, the best practice is for them to buy it and have it sent to you. Probably 99% of jobs in which a client wants you to buy something for them are scams.

No, it won't. Ever. You will not get that "pending" money.

It's a scam.

You've also violated Upwork's terms of service.

Why did you think that any real client would ever pay an amount that is so much more than the value of the crypto with real and legal money? That simply doesn't happen.

How much crypto have you sent?

Buying things - not necessarily a violation. It is conceivable that the freelancer has to pay a certain fee for the client, maybe in a case of filing legal documents. The freelancer will not be punished for doing this. Of course it should be avoided at all cost, paid directly by the client, but that might not always be possible. It might be a small part of faciliating the task. 

If the whole job is buying something, that should be a red flag for anybody. 

The second half of your sentence is obviously always true, not matter the circumstances.

Right. But since upwork doesn't have an expense management tool, those payments will have to be treated like any other payment and still constitutes buying something for the client.
