New client task but agreement is not yet provided

Hi! A client asked me to do a data entry job for him such as reading through his books. Should I request him to create an agreement first before doing anything? I asked him about the agreement and he told me that he will give it as soon as he received the email confirmation. Is this transaction legit? Should I don the task despite the agreement is still “pending”? I am a newbie.

Until you are hired and have accepted an Upwork-generated offer, you are not hired and you do no work. None,

You received an offer, you clicked the accept button, you see the job in your my jobs list. 

The client telling you 100 times that he will hire you in messages is not worth a thing.
