New to Upwork

So with my contract with the school here in my community ending soon, I decided I would like to try as a freelancer.  Never had any experience as a freelancer but willing to give it a try.  So I have a few questions, how do you know if you were selected for the job? How long does it usually takes to win a bid?  Is there any benefit in paying the monthly fee?  Just a few questions to ask.
