Pay for milestones when complete or to start work?

Hi all,

I'm new with upwork and just a contract for a job involving milestones. I wanted to check whether the client is supposed to "pay" for the first milestone before the work is done or whether the money being held in escrow is sufficient to begin work on the first milestone.

The client pays before the work starts. That money is put in escrow and released to the freelancer when the work is submitted and approved. So, once the money is in escrow, you should begin your work.
