Paying a non-hired freelancer for their time

Hi all,

First time using Upwork. We are in the process of hiring a VA. We have one guy that we have not hired yet, but he has begun looking at some training videos that we had sent him along with login credentials for a program he will need to use. He has not been able to access some of the required programs and we may have move on to another VA.

While we have not hired him yet, we do want to pay him for his time.

Do we hire him, send him a one-time bonus, and then end the service with him? Do we need to wait for the payment to go through before ending the contract? Can we send him money without hiring him on beforehand?

This being our first hire, we want to make sure we do this correctly.

Thank for the help!

1) Do we hire him, send him a one-time bonus, and then end the service with him?
2) Do we need to wait for the payment to go through before ending the contract?
3) Can we send him money without hiring him on beforehand?

1) Yes. Probably best to create a fixed price contract with one milestone, fund and then release that, and close the contract again straight away.

2) No

3) No
