Portfolio assistance - does something have to have been published to upload it?

I am trying to get my portfolio completed. However, I am having trouble. Is there a way to upload non-published presentations/PowerPoints and the like? Or papers? I have a lot of samples that can be used that were done during school and during my normal day to day dealing with various organizations, but they aren't officially published in the literal sense so there is no website url for them. 

Additionally, I found something that talked about uploading to YouTube or vimeo and setting as public but that concerns me as the stuff hasn't been published and I wouldn't want it plagiarized.

Hi Erica,

You can use your portfolio to show off projects related to any or all of your skills, it doesn't have to be published work, so long as you personally have worked on every item you add and adhere to all of Upwork’s Terms of Service. Make sure you have permissions to use the work in your portfolio.

Is there a specific way to input/ upload stuff? What about the type of
profile being used?
