I want to create my portfolio, will adding the companies that I'm currently working for as a freelancer be okay?

You may put anything into your portfolio that you created, and which you have permission to put in.

You may ask the clients for whom you did work if you may include that work in your portfolio.

Generally speaking, you may do so by communicating with them directly.

For Upwork contracts, there is a button you can use to indicate that a portfolio item is from an Upwork contract, and you can use that button to request formal permission from the client to include the work from that contract.
