Providing a cellphone number for verification

I need to know how to remove a number from my account that I used to verify my upwork account. TLDR: My phone doesn't receive texts right away so I used my husband's number and now he wants to start freelancing but cannot verify his number even though I've removed it from my profile and added my number. Everytime he tried to verify his number it says it is still in use. Is the verification final for that one number or is there anything else I can do to fix it?
