Tax Information Netherlands

Hello! I am new to UpWork and I have just received my first job offer. I would like to take it but I want to arrange my tax payment properly before. Since I am in the Netherlands, I have filled in a Non-US form and in the Legal Name of Business I put my own name as I don’t have an agency. Is there any minimum amount that I can earn before I am obliged to pay taxes? And how can I arrange to pay my taxes?

Hi Alina,

I would like to clarify that you can use your own legal name as it appears in your passport or other official documents when completing Form W-8BEN. You can find more information in this help article

You may want to talk to a local legal and/or tax advisor to find out about the best ways for you to register your business and report your Upwork income to your local tax authorities.

Additionally, one of our agents will follow up with you on your open support ticket to assist you furhter.

Thank you,

~ Nikola

Hi Nikola,

I have a question about this too..

On Upwork it says that I have to fill out the name of my business on the W-8BEN form but when I went to fill it in I could only fill in my personal name.

It seems like the W-8BEN-E is however for entities and on this one you can fill in your business's name.

I am super confused about the whole thing. Which one am I meant to fill in?

Also, where am I meant to hand this in?

And does this mean I will have to do my taxes in the US at some point?

Thanks

Hi Mijsje,

Thank you for reaching out to us. I would like to clarify that you can complete the W-8BEN on your account. Go to Settings> Tax Info and add all information. You can use your own legal name as it appears in your passport or other official documents

The Form W-8BEN is a form used to confirm you’re not a U.S. taxpayer and that Upwork is not required to withhold taxes from your earnings. For record-keeping purposes, Upwork requires a Form W-8BEN for all non-U.S. taxpayers paid on Upwork. Once you file your Form W-8BEN, the system will activate your eligibility to access funds immediately.

Let us know if you have further questions.

Hi Nikola,

I have added a screenshot of what I am seeing because it's very unclear to me where I should be uploading the form... ? The only thing Upwork asks for is the name of my business ("Provide the same name as shown on your tax return."), which isn't on the form because it's not an entity form but a personal one.. So how am I meant to match those?

And could you answer the question about if I have to do anything apart from filling this form in and letting it sit in my computer? As in will I have to report my tax income in the US at any point?

Hi Mijsje,

All you need to do is to fill out the form and click on the green button. You don't need to take any additional actions from your end.
You can fill out the form with your business name if you have one, or your full legal name. Thank you.
