Hello there,

I found some job posts very suspectable.

3 weeks ago I submitted a proposal for a job post, but till now, the job post is still there - it shows no hires, no interviewing, no invites sent. A job like this should be displayed no longer available or valid, but this job has no follow-up action. It just stays there, and Upwork takes no actions as well.

Jobs that do not hire will stay. The only way to avoid losing money is to learn about vetting, and only apply to genuine jobs and nothing else, even if that means you have no work here.

You need to use the Academy to learn how to use the platform and find your first job.

This is not how you write a proposal.

You need to go to the top of the page, and use the link to the Academy. You have to learn how to use the platform before putting in proposals, or you will be scammed.

Hi Karima,

I am stepping in for Andrea. It is great to hear that you find our shared resources helpful. On Upwork, your profile is a critical tool to your success. It is a great way to demonstrate your skills and experience. Leveraging it to its full potential may help you differentiate yourself from other freelancers and improve the likelihood of getting hired. Here are some of the items successful freelancers incorporate into their profiles below:

  • Build your profile: This is your chance to showcase your skills and experience to potential clients. Complete your profile, including your work history, education, and a description of your services.
  • Build a strong portfolio: Your portfolio may help impress potential clients with real-life examples of your skills and expertise. Add any projects you’ve completed in the past to help you showcase your skills.

Additionally, I encourage you to sign up for upcoming events and webinars to enhance your success on Upwork.

You may also post here if you'd like to hear recommendations from our community members on how to improve your profile.

Good luck!

Hi Ivygail J,

Thank you for stepping in and for the great tips! I will definitely take your advice and work on improving my profile and portfolio. I’m also interested in attending the upcoming events and webinars to enhance my chances on Upwork.

Do you have any specific recommendations on how to present my UI/UX design projects in a more appealing way to clients? I’d appreciate any feedback!

Thanks again for your support!

Best regards,
Karima

Hi Karima,

This is Ronna, stepping in for Ivy. I highly recommend continuing to complete your profile first so you can better showcase your skills and expertise and attract quality clients on Upwork. Additionally, it would be best to add more skills in the Skills section on your profile. You can add up to 15 skills. This can help your profile to show up in search when clients search for freelancers that match your skills. For further guidance, you can check these helpful pages:

Ayesha, there are steps you must take before you look for jobs. You haven't done anything you need to do to freelance here. Use the link at the top of the page to the Academy and learn how to set up a profile, look for and accept jobs.

Being a student is great, but won't get you a single job. Freelancers must have marketable skills, and being a student is not a skill. Don't look at jobs or accept an invitation until you have gone through all of the Upwork information and resources. If you do, with an empty profile and no marketable skills, you will be scammed.

Take some time to honestly assess your skills. You may have great skills in other areas. If you do not have marketable skills for this platform, you need to reconsider working as a freelancer. Typing is a flooded field and pays very little. It's also one of the areas with mostly scams. Assignment work is what you receive in school, it has nothing to do with freelancing.

You probably won't like my words, but if I didn't care, I would let you be scammed and go away miserable. Freelancing requires marketable skills, money to run the business, time, motivation, patience, and again, those marketable skills. If you don't have those in place, you will not find success. Think about what skills you have and consider emplyment in those areas.
