Tips for finding that first job

Hi all,

Welcome to the Upwork Community! We know landing that first contract can be challenging, so we built Upwork Academy and threads like this to help you get started. With a lot of resources and so little time, we wanted to put together some recommendations for you to check out first:

You need to go to the Upwork Academy, and the link is at the top of the page. Do not look or apply for jobs until you learn the Terms of Service and how to use hourly and fixed price jobs.

I submitted 9 proposals with well written cover letter and portfolio along with attachments to relevant work. I used so many of my connects to boost proposals and bid. Still I am still waiting for response from any of those clients. What should I do now? I have work experience of 3 years but I starting upworking now. It’s so demotivating for me to not getting a single response

The best way to attract real clients and deter scammers is to have a professional profile. You need to use the Academy to learn. You're wasting the first sentence of your profile by repeating the skills. It should tell the client what you can do for them with your education, skills, and experience. There are other changes you need to make.

When you apply, don't look back and don't wait. You proceed to look for projects.

I would remove the AI specialist from the skills, and leave it with two. Using “AI” to create images is not a skill, when anyone can do it, so I don't think you will gain many clients. Move it down into the text.

Graphic design is a flooded category, with fierce competition from professional freelancers. You are going to have to increase your skills or find a niche.

You need to learn about vetting, and you won't learn that on Upwork. It doesn't mean searching a client on Google, either. Before you spend more money on clients that aren't going to hire you, learn about vetting.

Freelancers often have to put in dozens to 100 proposals before being hired. Of course, everyone is different, but Upwork isn't a place to come and just find work. Most platforms are not. Work experience does not always translate to getting jobs.

Now, you assess your skills to see if you have what it takes to be a professional freelancer. Consider how much money you can put into this, because it's going to cost you. Freelancers always spend money before they know they will make any for certain. Do you have the patience, motivation, and time to learn and increase your skills? If not, you will have a very difficult time.

Boosting is usually a waste of connects. It does not guarantee the client will read your proposal, much less interview or hire. The only time you should ever boost is if you hold every requirement at a professional level, and know that you are one of the top two people who have applied. How do you know? You look at your skills compared to professional designers. The client can see the JSS, your skills, and the first two sentences of the proposal. That is more than enough for many clients to determine if they want to read the whole thing. The client will interact with your proposal, but that can mean not wanting to read further.

Rabia,

Welcome to Upwork.

Nice minature art illustrations. However, no one in the Community Forums can help you get a job on Upwork.

Here is what you should do:

1) The first thing you should do is change your profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face--not an AI-generated image, graphic, avatar, or anything that does not show your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

2) Complete your profile--especially your overview/summary. The only chance you have to win jobs is by having a complete profile and by writing convincing cover letters. The first part is your profile and it needs to showcase your experience as a visual artist, your illustration/art services, and why clients should hire you for an illustration/art project.

3) Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. There is absolutely no way a visual artist can have a profile without a portfolio. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills. After the overview or summary, the portfolio is typically the section clients review most often.
